Directing Questions by Topic
Communication and incentives carry the set. About 31 questions mention communication, and 18 of those are about its barriers: semantic, psychological, organisational and personal. 23 questions mention incentives, split between 8 on non-financial incentives such as status, job security, job enrichment and employee participation, and 6 on financial incentives such as bonus, profit sharing and stock options.
Motivation comes up in about 16 questions, with 4 of them on Maslow's Need Hierarchy and its assumptions. Leadership appears in about 12, and 6 of those are on leadership styles, mostly autocratic and democratic. Features or importance of directing itself account for 11 questions, and 7 more ask you to separate formal communication from informal communication or to name a type of formal channel. The counts come from keyword matches, so a question that touches two topics is counted under both.
| Topic | Questions Naming It (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Communication | 31 |
| Incentives | 23 |
| Barriers to communication | 18 |
| Motivation | 16 |
| Leadership | 12 |
| Features and importance of directing | 11 |
| Non-financial incentives | 8 |
| Semantic barriers | 7 |
| Formal and informal communication | 7 |
| Financial incentives | 6 |
| Psychological barriers | 6 |
| Leadership styles | 6 |
| Maslow's hierarchy | 4 |
The listing format matters as much as the topic. About 37 of the written questions say "any two", "any three", "any four" or "any six", and 9 of the 11 six-mark questions ask for four points or for three named items, such as three semantic barriers or three non-financial incentives.

How to Approach the Directing Set
Do the 21 MCQs first, in about 20 minutes. 7 of them describe a company or a manager in a few lines and ask which style of leadership, which incentive or which barrier is at work, so read the case for the clue before you look at the options. 3 are match-the-following and 4 are assertion-reason or statement-based, where one wrong word decides the answer.
For the written answers, count the points the question wants and stop there: "any four" means four. 12 of the written questions are case paragraphs, and the marks go to quoting the line that gives the answer away, for instance a manager who gives orders and never consults anyone pointing to autocratic leadership. In a 6-mark answer on three named barriers or incentives, give each part a heading and two to three lines.
Common Mistakes in Directing Questions
- Filing a barrier under the wrong group. A superior's lack of confidence in subordinates is a personal barrier, while status and rules and regulations are organisational.
- Calling a bonus or profit sharing a non-financial incentive.
- Writing the features of leadership when the stem asks for the features of directing.
- Answering a "NOT a feature" or "incorrect statement" MCQ with a true statement.
- Describing Maslow's levels without stating the assumptions the question asks for.
- Naming a leadership style without quoting the behaviour in the case that shows it.
