A Neglected Child
Bholi, whose real name is Sulekha, is the youngest daughter of Ramlal. As a baby an attack of smallpox left her face pockmarked, and she also stammers when she speaks. Her family thinks she is dull and pays her little attention. She grows up timid and silent, dressed in old clothes and often laughed at.
School Changes Her
When a primary school opens in the village, Bholi is sent there, mainly because her parents do not value her much. At school a kind and gentle teacher treats her with warmth and patience. She encourages Bholi to speak slowly and to read. Over the years Bholi gains confidence, learns well, and becomes a thoughtful, self-respecting girl.
The Wedding and the Refusal
Years later, a marriage is arranged for Bholi with Bishamber, a well-off but much older and lame man. At the wedding he greedily demands five thousand rupees as dowry before he will marry her. The educated Bholi refuses to marry such a greedy man and rejects the match in front of everyone. Her father, at first shocked, feels proud of her courage. Bholi decides to serve her parents and teach at her old school.
