The Cherry Tree Summary for Class 8 English Poorvi
In Ruskin Bond's The Cherry Tree, Rakesh plants a cherry seed in his grandfather's garden near Mussoorie. The sapling grows slowly, survives a goat, a careless scythe, snow and birds, and finally becomes a tree with blossoms and shade.
The main message is that something becomes special when we care for it ourselves. Rakesh's final wonder comes from seeing life grow through his own small action.

Harvest Hymn Video Revision

Harvest Hymn by Sarojini Naidu is a poem of praise. Men's voices praise Surya and Varuna. Women's voices praise Prithvi. All voices praise the eternal divine power behind life, labour and harvest.
Important symbols: Surya stands for light and ripening, Varuna stands for rain, Prithvi stands for the nurturing earth, and seed plus scythe stands for the complete farming cycle.
Waiting for the Rain Theme and Message
Waiting for the Rain presents Velu, a hardworking farmer worried by drought. He goes to the weather office for a practical answer, but nobody can say when rain will come. An old woman then tells him that the land, like people, needs rest.
The story does not show the old woman as a magician. She is wise because she helps Velu see the land as living and tired. Fallowing, or leaving land unsown for a time, helps soil recover moisture and nutrients.
Grammar and Writing Work in Environment
The chapter also revises vocabulary, taste words, homophones, tenses, punctuation, silent letters, determiners and speaking skills. Students should practise each language section with examples from the chapter.
- Past tense: simple past, past progressive and past perfect appear in The Cherry Tree.
- Present tense: simple present, present progressive and present perfect appear in Waiting for the Rain.
- Homophones: weather and whether, piece and peace, son and sun, rain and reign.
- Writing tasks: article on trees, slogan for farmers and formal letter for rainwater harvesting.
How to Use the Environment Notes PDF
Start with the story summaries, then revise the poem symbols. After that, use the grammar tables for practice. The PDF is best used beside the NCERT textbook because it follows the official chapter order.
- Revise The Cherry Tree as a seed-to-tree timeline.
- Learn the four voice groups in Harvest Hymn.
- Write Velu's change in thinking in three sentences.
- Practise one article, one slogan and one formal letter.
Tip: For exam answers, always name the text and give one detail from the chapter.
