Why कबीर's Language Looks Different

Students often stall on the first sakhi because the spelling does not match the Hindi they write. That is expected. Kabir travelled widely and his poems pick up words from several regions at once.

• His vocabulary draws on अवधी, राजस्थानी, भोजपुरी and पंजाबी together
• For that reason his language is called पचमेल खिचड़ी, and also सधुक्कड़ी
• साखी is the तद्भव form of साक्षी, from साक्ष्य, meaning direct or witnessed knowledge
• Each साखी is a दोहा: 24 मात्रा, with the pause falling after 13 and then 11
