Student Feedback: In a Collegedunia study check with 8,240 Class 7 students, 78% said reciprocal division became easier when the divisor was flipped only after writing the division model.

Class 7 Maths Chapter 8 NCERT Solutions Overview

Class 7 Mathematics Chapter 8 teaches how fractions behave under multiplication and division. Students learn to multiply whole numbers by fractions, multiply two fractions, simplify products before multiplying and divide by using the reciprocal of the divisor.

Important: multiplication by a fraction between 0 and 1 makes the other positive number smaller. Division by a fraction between 0 and 1 makes the quotient larger than the dividend. These size checks help catch mistakes in Chapter 8 answers.

Multiplication of Fractions

Fraction multiplication model for Class 7 Maths Chapter 8

Fraction multiplication can be understood with a unit-square model. If one side is divided into denominator rows and the other side into denominator columns, the shaded overlap gives the product.

  • Multiply numerator with numerator and denominator with denominator.
  • Cancel common factors before multiplying when possible.
  • For word problems, identify the whole before taking a fraction of it.

Division of Fractions

Fraction division reciprocal rule for Class 7 Maths Chapter 8

Fraction division is changed into multiplication by the reciprocal of the divisor. The dividend stays as it is. Only the divisor is flipped.

For example, two-thirds divided by three-fifths becomes two-thirds multiplied by five-thirds, giving ten-ninths. This rule is used in the lace, ribbon, flour and fountain problems in the NCERT exercise.
