The Government of West Bengal has launched the Kanyashree Scheme to encourage education in young girls. This scheme is organized by the Department of Women Development and Social Welfare. Three schemes are organized under the Kanyashree Scheme:

  • Annual Scholarship: Here female students between the ages of 13-17 will be eligible for an annual scholarship. With the help of this scholarship, the state government ensures that students remain at schools and pursue studies.
  • One-time grant: In this scheme girls between the age of 18-19 will be given financial funding.
  • Kanyashree Scholarship: Financial support is provided to students from both Arts and Science backgrounds every month.

Kanyashree Scheme Eligibility 

The eligibility criteria are different for the different types of Kanyashree scheme:

Annual Scholarship (K1):

  • The student should be a female and unmarried.
  • The student should belong to West Bengal.
  • The student should be between 13 and 17 years of age.
  • The student should be enrolled in classes between 8th and 12th grade in a government-recognized school or technical/vocational classes.
  • The annual income of the family should be less than INR 1,20,000
  • The family income limit will vary if the student is applying for a renewal of the scholarship or if the student is physically handicapped or if both the parents of the student have died.

One Time Grant (K2):

  • The student should be a female and unmarried.
  • The student should belong to West Bengal
  • The annual income of the family should be less than INR 1,20,000
  • The annual income limit will vary if the student is handicapped or both the parents have deceased.

Kanyashree Scholarship (K3):

  • Only students who have availed of the K2 scheme can enroll for the K3 Scheme.
  • The student must have passed an undergraduate course with a minimum of aggregate 45% marks
  • The student should have enrolled for a post-graduation course

Kanyashree Scheme Benefits 

Kanyashree Scholarship was launched to encourage female students to remain in school and thus reduce underage marriages.

  • It empowers students by providing monetary assistance. The amount is paid directly to their bank accounts, thus giving them decision-making power.
  • It also emphasizes increasing these students’ self-esteem by improving their communication skills. Events, workshops, competitions, and clubs arrange for this purpose. In addition to that strong, successful women act as role models providing these young girls with exemplary examples.
  • This scheme also works to discourage child marriages thereby reducing the risk of early pregnancies, child mortality, malnutrition, and other health hazards.

How to Apply for Kanyashree Scheme?

Application Process

The application process for K1 and K2 Schemes is as shown below:

  • Collect the application form from the relevant educational institutions
  • Fill in the form by adding necessary details like personal information, residential address, address of educational institute.
  • After signing the form, collect your parent’s or guardian’s signature.
  • Submit the application form along with all the necessary documents
  • The Head of the department of the institution will verify the details and stamp the application form
  • Collect the application slip and keep the reference number safely for future use
  • Once the form is submitted the details can be found online at 

The application process for the K3 Scheme can be seen below:

  • Students can register for this scheme by registering themselves at http://www.svmcm.wbhed.gov.in/
  • Click on the registration icon, after reading all the instructions click on the ‘This is to declare I have read all the instructions and then click on proceed to registration
  • Once the registration is complete a unique ID of 15 characters will be generated which can be used to log in. This applicant ID will be sent via email. Take a note of this ID as it will be used for further correspondence.
  • Then enter your mobile number, an OTP will be sent to your mobile number and a mail will be sent to your email-id.
  • The next step is to fill the authentication form by entering details like the candidate’s name, date of birth, and parent’s name and set a unique password.
  • Next, login using credentials like the unique ID and password and the security code.
  • Upload all the necessary documents including image and signature.
  • Finally, click on submit

Kanyashree Scheme FAQs

Ques: What are the Kanyashree Scheme Exposure visits?

Ans: The Kanyashree Scheme Exposure visits are conducted for the students enrolled in the Kanyashree scheme by the schools. These are learning experiences by the girls at public institutions. This will give the students a hands-on experience of how the offices function. A 45-minute orientation class will be held before the students begin their visit. The learning objects will be clearly defined. The visit will last for an hour, where the students will get to know the functions of the office. Once the visit is over students will have to discuss their findings and give clarity in case of doubts.

Ques: What is the maximum number of students for the Kanyashree Scheme Exposure visits?

Ans: The maximum number of students is twenty. They will have to be accompanied by two teachers. Every Kanyashree student should be given an opportunity to participate in such a visit.

Ques: What is the Kanyashree Club?

Ans: The Kanyashree Club is a group of Kanyashree girls who meet frequently to achieve common social goals. Once every quarter a formal outer event will be conducted to interact with the community. Some of the activities of the Kanyashree Club are to bring about awareness of the risks of child marriage, identify students who are at the risk of child marriage and bring it to the notice of authorities, maintain a kitchen garden, create awareness about hygiene, and so on.

Ques: How many members will the Kanyashree Club have?

Ans: The minimum number of members in a Kanyashree Club is six and the maximum is twenty-one. The teacher should nominate at least one Kanyashree girl from each class to the club.

Ques: What is the e-learning portal in the Kanyashree Scheme?

Ans: With the help of the e-learning portal students have an opportunity to study from anywhere. Subjects like Bengali, English, Computer, geography, history, mathematics, and science are available on this portal. Students can also take exams using this portal.
