IIT Bombay admission depends on the course, entrance exam and eligibility rules. BTech admission uses JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling. BDes uses UCEED, MTech usually needs GATE, MSc uses JAM, and MBA uses CAT with SJMSOM’s selection process. For 2026 BTech admission, the Class 12 requirement was 75% marks, or 65% for SC/ST/PwD students, or the board’s category-wise top 20 percentile. The 2026 final CSE closing rank was 67 for OPEN, gender-neutral seats. Cutoffs differ by branch and category. Design, research and PhD courses may also require tests or interviews. Students must complete the required application, document checks and fee payment on time. UCEED and CEED 2027 registration closes on 31 October 2026 with the regular fee.

Admission update: UCEED and CEED 2027 registration is open until 31 October 2026 with the regular fee. Both exams are on 17 January 2027. The listed Spring PhD late-fee deadline was 21 October 2026.

Counselling is the process used to offer seats based on rank, choices and other rules. Passing an entrance exam alone does not confirm a seat at IIT Bombay.

IIT Bombay BTech Admission: Eligibility and Process

Regular IIT Bombay BTech and BS admission is through JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling. Students must meet both the entrance-exam rules and the Class 12 rules for IIT admission.

For 2026 admission, students needed at least five subjects in Class 12, including Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. They had to meet either of these conditions:

  • At least 75% marks in the required five-subject total. This is 65% for SC, ST and PwD students.
  • A place in the top 20 percentile of successful students in their board and category.

The five-subject total uses Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, one language and the highest-scoring other subject.

IIT Bombay BTech admission process

1. Get a JEE Advanced rank
Meet the exam and IIT admission rules.
2. Fill JoSAA choices
List IIT Bombay branches in order of preference.
3. Accept the seat
Pay the seat-acceptance fee and complete document checks.
4. Report to IIT Bombay
Follow joining instructions and pay the remaining fees.

JoSAA gives seats based on rank, category, choices and available seats. The IIT Bombay cutoff is different for each branch, category and counselling round. A qualifying rank does not guarantee the branch a student wants.

BS Mathematics Admission Through INMO

In 2026, IIT Bombay offered a separate process for up to six INMO students. Applicants had to appear for Class 12 in 2026. They also had to be on the INMO qualified list for the junior or senior batch in 2026 or an earlier year.

The Mathematics department selected students through its entrance process. The application deadline was 12 May 2026. The oral exam/interview was held on 3 June 2026. These dates belong to the completed 2026 admission process.

IIT Bombay Cutoff 2026: BTech Opening and Closing Ranks

These are JEE Advanced 2026 Common Rank List (CRL) ranks for OPEN, gender-neutral seats in the final allocation listed in the annual JEE Advanced report. They are ranks, not marks or percentiles.

IIT Bombay BTech: 2026 final allocation, OPEN, gender-neutral
Branch Opening rank Closing rank
Computer Science and Engineering 1 67
Electrical Engineering 175 411
Mechanical Engineering 380 1900
Aerospace Engineering 1785 2638
Chemical Engineering 1933 2833
Civil Engineering 385 4417

The opening rank is the best rank that received a seat in that group. The closing rank is the last rank that received a seat. A lower rank number is better. Previous cutoffs help students plan their choices, but do not guarantee a seat in the next year.

The IIT Bombay cutoff page covers other categories and courses. Students must match the year, round, category and gender pool before comparing ranks.

IIT Bombay vs IIT Madras vs IIT Roorkee: BTech Admission

All three institutes use JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling for regular BTech admission. The comparison below uses the same four-year CSE course and the same OPEN, gender-neutral seat pool. Ranks are from the 2026 final allocation.

CSE admission comparison: JEE Advanced 2026 CRL ranks
College Opening rank Closing rank More cutoffs
IIT Bombay 1 67 IIT Bombay cutoff
IIT Madras 74 151 IIT Madras cutoff
IIT Roorkee 363 587 IIT Roorkee cutoff

IIT Bombay CSE closed at a lower rank number than the other two in this group. Students should also compare branch choice, fees and course content before filling JoSAA choices. The IIT Bombay fees page includes a first-semester fee comparison.

IIT Bombay BDes Admission Through UCEED

Students from any Class 12 stream can take UCEED 2027 if they passed Class 12 in 2026 or will appear in 2027. They must also meet the other UCEED rules.

The common BDes admission form is scheduled to open on 15 March 2027. Students must enter their institute choices and submit the required documents. The first seat allotment is tentatively planned for 21 April 2027.

Students who get a seat must pay the seat-acceptance fee on time. Rejecting the seat or missing the payment cancels the offer and removes the student from later rounds.

  • Freeze: Keep the offered institute and stop seeking a higher choice.
  • Float: Keep the offered seat while waiting for an institute placed higher in the choice list, where this option is allowed.

IIT Bombay MTech Admission: GATE and Eligibility

For 2026-27, MTech applicants needed a degree accepted by the chosen department. General, EWS and OBC-NCL applicants needed 60% marks, First Class or the stated equivalent, including 6.0/10 CGPA. SC, ST and PwD applicants needed 55% or the stated equivalent, including 5.5/10 CGPA.

Each department lists the accepted degrees and GATE papers. It may select students through GATE scores, a written test, an interview or a mix of these.

Eligible IIT degree holders admitted through JEE can apply without GATE if they have at least 8.0/10 CGPA/CPI under the stated rule. They must still complete the required selection steps.

Apply to IIT Bombay separately. COAP is used to accept or respond to applicable MTech offers. Registering on COAP does not submit an IIT Bombay application.

The 2026 form allowed up to ten course or specialisation choices. Applicants had to upload marksheets, a photograph, a signature and any required category certificate. Some admission categories also need employer permission, sponsorship papers or a statement explaining the student’s study plans.

IIT Bombay MBA Admission: CAT and Eligibility

The 2026-28 IIT Bombay MBA at SJMSOM was open to graduates from all subjects. Applicants needed at least 60% marks or 6.5/10 CPI. SC, ST and PwD applicants needed 55% or 6.0/10 CPI.

Final-year students could apply with their available results. They still had to meet the degree and marks requirements before final admission.

SJMSOM used CAT 2025 scores, academic results, work experience and other stated factors to choose students for interviews. The final selection also included the interview score. Students had to fill the SJMSOM form separately after taking CAT. International applicants follow separate rules.

IIT Bombay MSc Admission Through JAM

MSc applicants must qualify in the required JAM paper and meet the degree and subject requirements of the course. They then apply for admission through the JOAPS portal. The JAM 2026 admission application fee was ₹750 for all applicants.

JOAPS sends seat offers with a response deadline. Students must choose from the available acceptance, upgrade or rejection options. They must also pay the seat-booking fee on time. Missing the response or payment deadline can cancel the offer.

The marks needed to pass JAM are not the same as the cutoff for an IIT Bombay seat. Admission also depends on the course, rank and available seats.

IIT Bombay MDes Admission Through CEED

IDC School of Design offers MDes in Industrial Design, Communication Design, Interaction Design, Animation Design, and Mobility and Vehicle Design. Students must meet the degree rules for their chosen course and apply to IIT Bombay.

In the 2026 CEED-based process, the final score gave 70% weight to CEED and 30% to the written test and interview. Students also had to meet the minimum scores for their category. Passing CEED alone did not confirm admission.

MDes by Research had a separate rule for IIT BDes, MDes and MArch graduates with at least 8.0/10 CGPA/CPI. They could apply without CEED and take a separate assessment. This rule did not apply to the other MDes courses.

CEED 2027 is scheduled for 17 January 2027. The 2026 selection weights above should not be treated as confirmed rules for the 2027 batch.

IIT Bombay MPP and Other PG Admissions

Master of Public Policy: MPP

MPP eligibility depends on the applicant’s degree. The 2026-27 brochure accepts specified four-year bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate degrees and an eligible LLB qualification. The marks needed are:

  • Arts, commerce and the listed law group: 55%, or 50% for SC/ST/PwD applicants.
  • Listed science, engineering, architecture and medical degrees: 60%, or 55% for SC/ST/PwD applicants.

Teaching assistantship and available project-assistantship applicants need a valid GATE score. Self-financed applicants without work experience also need GATE.

Self-financed applicants using the work-experience rule need at least two years of experience. They must also have completed their UG degree at least two years before MPP admission. Sponsored applicants with at least two years of work experience can apply without GATE under the stated rule.

MS by Research and MA by Research

C-MInDS accepts eligible engineering degrees, four-year BS degrees and relevant MSc degrees for MS by Research. It normally uses GATE followed by its assessment. Eligible IIT BTech graduates with at least 8.0 CPI have a limited GATE exemption. MA by Research follows the HSS department’s own eligibility rules and lists GATE as its entrance exam.

Master in Development Practice: MDP

MDP is a one-year course. Applicants need a listed four-year engineering, technology, planning or architecture degree, or a master’s degree in physical sciences. They also need 24 months of field experience in the development sector.

Classes are mainly online, with some in-person sessions. CTARA says the next admission process will start in March 2027. MDP students do not get institute hostel rooms or access to the regular placement programme.

IIT Bombay PhD Admission: Spring 2026-27

The listed regular application deadline was 17 October 2026. The late-fee deadline was 21 October 2026. Both dates have passed. Students who applied must follow their department’s shortlist and test or interview instructions.

Tentative Spring PhD and double-doctoral admission dates
Stage Date
Shortlist announcement 30 October 2026
Written test / interview Department-specific dates
Result and fee-payment period 18-23 December 2026
Reporting and orientation 1-2 January 2027

These dates are tentative and may change. The Spring call does not include the Ashank Desai Centre for Policy Studies or MED-TRIC. Each department decides which degrees, entrance scores and research topics it accepts.

Students selected for teaching assistantship (TA) or research assistantship (RA) must complete assigned work and maintain the required academic performance. Sponsored and self-financed students should check whether their offer includes financial support. Joint PhD courses, including the IIT Bombay-Tohoku programme, have extra course-specific rules.

Online PG Diploma and Executive MBA Admission

IIT Bombay’s online diploma list includes AI and Data Science, E-Mobility, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, IC Design in Practice, Interaction Design, Digital Governance, and Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

Each ePGD has its own degree and selection rules. Students must use that course’s application form. The campus MTech form does not cover these diplomas.

The IIT Bombay-Washington University Executive MBA requires a graduate degree, English proficiency and at least seven years of work experience. At least five years must be in a managerial role.

Batch 12 starts in January 2027. The listed Round 5 application deadline is 5 November 2026. The course lasts 18 months and includes in-person sessions and a study stay in the US.
