The North Eastern Council Scholarship is a scholarship granted by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India. The North Eastern Council acts as an advisory body and bids to uplift the social and economic development of eight states of North East India, i.e. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.

The NEC Scholarships aims to provide financial assistance to the meritorious and underserved students of these North Eastern States who are facing financial hurdles so that every student can get the golden opportunity to pursue higher education and fulfill their dreams without having any financial constraints.

NEC Scholarship Eligibility

The NEC Scholarship takes into account many other requirements along with education being one of them. To apply for the scholarship, candidates must adhere to all the enlisted eligibility criteria given below.

The candidate must be a permanent resident of any of the eight North Eastern states.
The candidate must not be employed and should not have taken any other scholarship or any kind of financial assistance from any other source.
The annual income of the applicant’s family must be less than Rs. 8.0 Lakhs.
The scholarship is applicable to students who get admission in Diploma, Degree, Post-graduate courses of any institute recognized by the Government.
The scholarship for M.Phil and Ph.D shall be applicable after the registration of the students with the University recognized by the Government. The scholarship for M.Phil. will be available for 2 years and for Ph.D scholarship shall be for 3 years.The Scholarship will not be available for internship or any practical training.
The duration of scholarship shall only cover the year of commencement of the applicant’s course. For the subsequent year of course, renewal of the scholarship would be needed. However, for students taking admission in integrated courses, full time scholarship is availed by the Government.
Educational Qualifications:

Diploma	The candidate must have scored a minimum aggregate of 60% marks in HSLC/HSSLC/equivalent examination from a recognized state/central board.
Degree	The candidate must have scored a minimum aggregate of 60% marks in Senior Secondary leaving certificate examination /HSSLC/equivalent examination from a recognized state/central board.
Postgraduate	The candidate must have scored a minimum aggregate of 60% marks in Degree level examination in any discipline (BA/BSc/BE/B Tech/MBBS/LLB/BCA/BBA etc. from any recognized Institute/ University
M.Phil/ Ph.D	The candidate must have scored a minimum aggregate of 60% marks in PG degree from any recognized University.

NEC Scholarship Benefits

The number of NEC Scholarships awarded to students every year is 1600. The number of scholarships awarded every year to candidates of different states under NER Scholarship is as follows:

The NER Scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to students by rewarding them money upto Rs.30,000 per annum for their academic hard work. Getting a scholarship is difficult because of the competition. However, once you get a scholarship based on your achievements, it’ll not only be beneficial financially but also will help in boosting your resume and building a network.

NEC Scholarship provides financial assistance to students based on their educational level. Hence, the present rate of scholarship for fresh and renewal cases at different levels are as follows:

How to apply for the NEC Scholarship?

Application Process

The applicants will have to first register themselves on the official website of National Scholarship Portal, i.e https://scholarships.gov.in/ . The application form can also be filled using the National Scholarship Portal app, also called as UMANG app.
When an applicant clicks on new registration on the link given above, they will have to agree to the terms and conditions given in the undertaking after which the application form will be made available by the portal. Students are advised to read the undertaking carefully.
After agreeing to the terms and conditions in the undertaking, students will have to fill the application form by providing basic and demographic details. Students also have to provide their bank details such as IFSC code, name, branch, etc.
After filling these details, they will be asked to choose one identification number out of either Aadhaar number or bank account number after which an OTP will be sent to your mobile number for the verification of the number.
Applicant now needs to log in using this newly generated OTP along with one identification number (Aadhar/Bank account number)
After this, the applicant can fill the remaining form by uploading the necessary scanned documents. After submission of the form, an application number and password is generated which will be used for future login purposes.

NEC Scholarship FAQs

Ques. How is the verification of the application done?

Ans. The verification of the application form is done in 2 steps:

Institute level - The present institute of the applicant must be registered on the NSP for verifying the applications on NSP. The application of students which could not be verified because their institute is not registered on NSP, will not be considered for scholarship.
Domicile state level - The second level verification of applications will be done by the Nodal Officer nominated for this purpose by the respective NE State Governments. The officer will be in charge of accepting, rejecting or marking an application defective if documents produced to him are suspicious.

Ques. How are students selected for the scholarship?

Ans. The scholarship is purely merit based. Hence, after the verification of documents a merit list will be drawn from verified applicants. In case, there is a tie between two applicants then the applicant with low annual family income will be chosen for the scholarship.

Ques. How are students for M.Phil/Ph.D selected for the scholarship?

Ans. The selection of students for M. Phil and Ph. D. will be done on the basis of their topic of research/synopsis which is relevant to the problems/issues related to NE Region. Basic and theoretical research shall not be favoured in general.

Ques. How is the scholarship amount distributed?

Ans. The scholarship amount will be disbursed to selected students by NEC directly in their provided and verified bank accounts using Direct Benefit Transfer mode.

Ques. How to renew NEC Scholarship?

Ans. The applicant has to renew their NEC Scholarship every subsequent year. To do so, the applicant must fill the renewal form available on the NSP website and submit it along with the marksheet/certificate of the previously qualified examination. The applicant must note that, any kind of pending backlog in the previous year, any break in the scholarship during the course time period, change in the subject/course or institution after availing of the scholarship will lead to the rejection of the renewal process of the scholarship.
