The INSPIRE scholarship for higher education (SHE) is offered by the Department of science and technology, Government of India to the meritorious students for further studies in science and research. It stands for "Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE)". The main objective of this scholarship is to provide an opportunity for students to pursue bachelors or masters studies in science.

It is a merit-based scholarship and there is no separate examination conducted for it. Every year 10,000 scholarships are provided to students and candidates receive INR 80,000/ year to study natural or basic sciences subjects. The scholarship is given based on merit and eligibility fulfillment by the applicant.
INSPIRE Scholarship Important Dates
The INSPIRE scholarship is offered each year and the application starts from the month of October. The eligible applicants must visit the official website of the department of science and technology to get updated on the date of application. INSPIRE Scholarship Eligibility
Class 12th pass-out students of the year 2021 can apply for the scholarship. It is essential for the candidate applying for the scholarship to be studying Bachelors in science/ natural science or are pursuing the B.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc. level course. Further details on the eligibility are mentioned below:
- The candidate must be among the top 1% of the students of any central or state board examinations
- The applicant’s age must be between 17-22 years.
- Students must be enrolled in any course of Natural/ Basic Sciences at BSc, BS, and Integrated MSc/MS level in the same year of completing class 12.
- Only regular full-time courses are accepted for the scholarship. Distance education students cannot apply for the scholarship.
- Students who are among the top 10,000 rankers in the Joint Entrance Examination of IIT, or cleared CBSE- All India pre-medical test and have opted to study Natural/Basic Sciences are also eligible for the scholarship.
- Students studying at Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Basic Sciences, pursuing courses in Natural/Basic Sciences are also eligible.
- Medalists of the KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna), National Talent Search Examination (NTSE), and Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS) and are pursuing B.Sc./BS/M.sc or integrated M.Sc. in the science field are eligible.
- The subjects that come under the scope of Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) are Mathematics, Geology, Physics, Statistics, Chemistry, Astrophysics, Botany, Biology, Astronomy, Zoology, Microbiology, Electronics, Geophysics, Biochemistry, Geochemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, ecology, Marine Biology, biophysics, and Oceanic Sciences.
INSPIRE Scholarship Benefits
Under the scholarship, each selected candidate is given an amount of money valued at INR 80,000 per annum for studying Science, technology, or related field and the candidate is willing to pursue research as a career.
- The beneficiary can avail the amount till five years or till the completion of his course whichever is earlier.
- INR 60,000 is the fixed amount paid to all the candidates selected and the remaining 20,000 is only given to students who opt for summertime research programs under the guidance of an active researcher from a recognized research center of India.

How to apply for the INSPIRE Scholarship?
Application Process
Candidates wishing to apply for the scholarship can visit the official website.
- As the first step of the application candidates need to register themselves. They can visit the website https://www.online-inspire.gov.in/ and register themselves with an active email id.
- As a part of the registration, the applicant needs to provide the basic information including name, gender, DOB, and eligibility on the basis of which they are applying.
- Once registration is done, applicants are required to log in with the generated credential and access their dashboard.
- Personal details (father’s anime, MOther’s name, address, etc), educational details including the name of university a student is enrolled in along with enrollment details are needed to be filled in.
- Additional details such as performance in any competitive examinations such as NTSE are also asked, and students must provide supporting documents for the same.
- Once the details are filled, the next step of the application process is document upload. Applicants are required to scan and upload all the required documents (elaborated further) in not more than 1 MB file.
- After completion of the form, students are required to submit the form. One must ensure the details before the submission of the form as there is no modify/edit option available for the application form.
- Applicants must keep a printed copy of the application and the reference number safe with them for future reference.
