Canada Enforces Cap on International Student Visas in Face of Housing Challenges

In recent news Canada announced that there is going to be a two year cap on international Canada student permits. The Canada government would also stop granting work permits to some postgraduate students to control the massive influx of immigrants which will aggravate the housing crisis in Canada.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller said the federal government will be working with the provincial government, who are incharge of the education system to implement the cap.

The primary goal of the cap, according to him, is to protect students attending universities—which are frequently joint ventures between the public and private sectors—that offer inadequate facilities at excessive costs while also relieving pressure on Canada housing and other services.

Marc Miller said "Some private institutions have taken advantage of international students by operating under-resourced campuses, lacking support for students and charging high tuition fees, all the while significantly increasing their intake of international students."

"This increase is also putting pressure on housing, healthcare and other services," he said, adding that fewer numbers would primarily help lower prices for rent.

A statement from the immigration ministry states that the cap is anticipated to result in about 360,000 issued study permits in 2024, a fall of 35% from 2023.

The number of people in Canada is growing fast because more people are moving here from other countries. This is putting pressure on important services like healthcare and schools, and it's also making it harder for people to find affordable housing. Because of these issues, many people are not happy with the Prime Minister.

Last year, during the third part of the year, the population grew really quickly - the fastest it has in more than sixty years. A big part of this growth came from people who aren't permanent residents, like students. In fact, the number of these non-permanent residents increased by a lot - the most it has in more than fifty years.

A group called the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA), which looks out for students' interests, didn't like a new rule that limits the number of these non-permanent residents. They say this rule is only because of the housing problem. Instead, they think international students need more help with housing.

On the other hand, the University of Toronto was happy about the new rule. They said they'll work with the government to decide who gets study permits. The university also said these changes are meant to stop certain people from taking advantage of the system, not to hurt universities like theirs.
