Program Description

  • Carleton University offers a Master of Computer Science for a duration of 2 years.
  • This program is offered on a full-time basis and consists of 3 options: research project, thesis, and co-op option.
  • It is a joint program between the School of Computer Science at Carleton University and the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Ottawa.
  • Students get an opportunity to augment their knowledge and expertise by combining course work and through research in a wide range of areas, e.g. algorithms, computer security, etc.
  • The major components of the Computer Science program are:
    • Algorithms and Complexity
    • Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Systems
    • Software Engineering
    • Parallel and Distributed Systems
    • Information Systems Security and Applied Cryptography
  • Students in the MCS program can select from over 50 courses that are offered by the OCICS either at the School of Computer Science or at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
  • In the thesis and course-based, students must take 5 courses or equivalent in thesis and 8 courses in the course-based and a project in the last semester.
  • Co-op students complete 2 work terms of 4 months and the first work term is taken after 2 terms of course work.
  • Students admitted to the co-op option can apply at a local high tech company for work up to 8 months.
  • The University provides a 1-year in-depth research project in research labs, e.g., National Research Council, Communication Research Centre, in the specialized course program.
  • The MCS at Carleton University is a government-designated STEM degree, so international students may be eligible for the 24-month F1 OPT (optional practical training) extension.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must have a bachelor's degree (honors) in computing science or related field from a recognized institution.
  • An honors degree in a program must include at least 12 computer science half-credits, two of which must be at the 4000-level, and seven half-credits in mathematics and theoretical computer science.
  • The related fields include a UG degree in computer engineering, engineering science, computational mathematics, applied computing, applied mathematics, computer information systems.
  • GPA of at least 3.33/4.33 (B+ grade) is required to be eligible for the program.

Work Experience Eligibility:

  • The works experience is more useful for students opting for the master's program.
  • For the thesis-based master's program, admission is offered based upon publications, participation in research projects, and academic awards.


Students without related academic experience or work experience are also encouraged to apply, given they have n overall average of at least 70% is required in the UG program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed both a bachelor’s (3 years) degree and a master’s degree.
  • Or, obtained a first-class division (75% or above, Distinction or Outstanding).

Submission of GRE scores is not compulsory for this program, however, if students have taken that exam, then it is recommended to submit the scores (300+) for better a chance of admission.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • CV/Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work, and/or volunteer experience.
  • Transcript: A PDF copy of all post-secondary transcripts within the application or in Carleton Central.
  • Two Letter of Reference: Referees (Teachers, guidance counselors, or Professors) should comment on academics and that references should submit along with the application system.
  • Statement of Intent: Explain the reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • Writing Sample: Students applying for a job, internship, may be asked to provide a writing sample that allows an employer or graduate program to judge student ability to convey a written message.
  • Aptitude test results: Used to make inferences about competencies, capabilities, and future performance on the job of the students.
  • Preference Form: Some departments require students to fill in a preference form that will ask to outline their preferences for the program specialization, research area, or faculty supervisor.
  • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.

VISA & Work Study


  • Students need a Study Visa to stay in Canada. After receiving the study permit, they can apply for the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
  • The cost of the Study Visa is 112 USD and valid for the length of the study program, plus an extra 90 days.
  • At the time of VISA application, students need to provide various documents:

Work Study

  • The Work-Study Program provides students a chance to get at a part-time on-campus job.

  • The work-study hourly wage is $15.00/hour plus vacation pay.
