Program Description

  • Master of Laws at the University of Alberta is offered as a 1-year research degree program.
  • It is an on-campus, thesis-based program offered on both a full-time (12 months) and Part-time (36 months) basis.
  • Law program helps students, lawyers, and academics from related disciplines to grind legal expertise and conduct advanced research
  • Students enrolled in the LLM program must successfully complete graduate-level courses (9 credits) including seminar (3 credits) and 2 additional graduate-level courses (6 credits).
  • The curriculum is highly regarded for providing students with a strong foundation in the study of law and students are required to complete 8 hours of ethics training.
  • University provides the flexibility to complete the full-time program in 4 years and a part-time program in 6 years.
  • LLM students are required to articulate and defend a thesis, demonstrating proficiency with relevant scholarship and an ability to make an original research contribution to their field of study.
  • The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research requires graduate students to submit an individualized professional development plan within 12 months of commencing the LLM degree program.
  • The student-faculty ratio of the LLM program is 21:1.
  • Students can use their degrees to pursue PhD, university teaching positions, or professional careers in private practice, the civil service, and the non-profit sector.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must have a JD, LLB, or equivalent university degree from the University of Alberta or an institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
  • Students have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B Grade) on the University of Alberta's 4-point scale.
  • The LSAT score is required to be eligible for this program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed a 4-year UG degree with first-class division in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a 3-year UG degree with 60% marks from a recognized University.
  • Students must have a GPA of 3.0/4.0 (B Grade) based on the recent 2-year of full-time study.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • CV/Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work, and/or volunteer experience.
  • Transcripts: Submit copies of official transcripts from post-secondary institutions attended in PDF format.
  • Reference Form/Letter: Three reference forms and letters of recommendation completed and uploaded by referees (Teachers, guidance counsellors, or Professors) directly to the online portal.
  • Research Proposal: 2-5 page description of the proposed research project, outlining the relevant legal issues, preliminary arguments, and the proposed research methodology.
  • Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • Statement of Motivation: It is one that connects areas of interest and career goals, as well as past education and work experience, with the programs offered and the work being done at the University of Alberta.
  • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL or other test scores.

VISA

  • A student VISA is required to study in Canada and work on-campus and off-campus.
