The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is a public, English-medium university in Charlottetown, the provincial capital of Prince Edward Island in Atlantic Canada. Its Atlantic Veterinary College is ranked #46 globally in Veterinary Science as per QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, the strongest subject standing on the island.

UPEI runs seven faculties and two schools, covering Arts, Business, Education, Nursing, Science, Sustainable Design Engineering and Veterinary Medicine, plus schools for Mathematical and Computational Sciences and Climate Change and Adaptation. Programmes are delivered in English, admit two intakes a year and welcome about 1,800 international students from over 90 countries. Indian applicants are drawn by the small-city cost base, four-year Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility and clear pathways into Canada’s PR routes. UPEI fees for international undergraduates start at CAD 15,868 per year, one of the lowest headline totals among Canadian publics of this size. A useful next stop is the MS universities in Canada guide for course-level shortlisting.

  • QS Veterinary Science Rank 2026: #46 globally
  • Acceptance Rate: 75% (estimated)
  • Intakes: Fall (September) and Winter (January)
  • UG Tuition (International): CAD 15,868 per year (INR 11.03 lakh)
  • Total Enrolment (Fall 2025): 5,503 students
  • Average MBA Programme Cost: CAD 36,890 (INR 25.65 lakh)

Also Check: MS in Canada Universities

UPEI publishes a single international-student fee added on top of programme tuition, so total cost stays predictable across four years. Entrance awards of CAD 1,000 to CAD 3,000 (INR 0.70 to 2.09 lakh) are auto-assessed from the admission file, and graduates of programmes above 8 months qualify for the Canadian post-study work visa of up to three years. Living costs in Charlottetown sit well below Toronto or Vancouver, keeping the full study in Canada budget manageable for Indian families.

Exchange rate used: 1 CAD = INR 69.54 as of August 2026

Admission Status: Open (Winter 2027 intake). The Fall 2026 international deadline of 01 August 2026 has closed. Winter 2027 applications are open with a deadline of 01 December 2026, and select graduate programmes accept later reviews on a rolling basis. The next cycle, for Fall 2027 entry, is expected to open October 2026 with a fixed close of 01 August 2027.

University of Prince Edward Island Admission 2027

UPEI runs two annual intakes for international applicants, Fall (September) and Winter (January), with a smaller Spring/Summer window for select graduate programmes. Fall is the primary cycle for Indian applicants, and Winter serves as a strong backup for MBA, MEd and Analytics.

UPEI PG and UG Admission Dates 2027

The table below lists the confirmed international deadlines from the official UPEI admissions cycle. Graduate programmes with rolling admissions may accept later submissions until seats fill.

MilestoneDateNotes for Indian Applicants
Winter 2027 application deadline01 December 2026Applies to most UG and taught PG programmes
Credential verification (WES)Start 10 weeks before deadlineSend transcripts by 20 September 2026 to meet December cut-off
Fall 2027 application deadline01 August 2027Primary intake; earlier for scholarships and study permit lead time
Fall 2027 programme startEarly September 2027Orientation week precedes classes

Planning note: Indian applicants should build in 14 to 18 weeks between application submission and travel because the study permit review from New Delhi takes 8 to 12 weeks on the SDS route, and WES adds 20 working days on top of transcript dispatch time.

UPEI Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

UPEI publishes a single set of academic thresholds for Indian applicants, split by degree level. English test scores below apply university-wide unless a programme states higher minimums.

Postgraduate Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree: Three or four-year bachelor’s with 55% aggregate or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); a Second Class or higher IPU/DU degree is the standard reference
  • English Proficiency: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall or TOEFL iBT 100 (verify component minimums at UPEI ELP page); PTE Academic 66; Duolingo English Test 120
  • Credential Verification: WES ICAP evaluation for Indian transcripts before file review
  • Programme-specific: MBA/EMBA prefers GMAT 550 or 3 years work experience; MSN needs active RN licence

Undergraduate Requirements

  • Class 12 Board Score: 70% to 85% aggregate depending on programme; Nursing needs 75% with Biology and Chemistry (recommended)
  • English Proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 80 with no section below 20; PTE Academic 58; CAEL 60

Key insight: Applicants from CBSE, ICSE or state-board English-medium schools with a Class 12 English mark of 70% or higher can request an IELTS waiver at UPEI, but the waiver is programme-dependent, so email inte@upei.ca before submitting the application.

University of Prince Edward Island Acceptance Rate 2027

UPEI does not publish an official acceptance rate; the widely cited figure derived from third-party admission data sits at 75% (estimated). That places UPEI in the moderately competitive band for Canadian publics, sharply higher than U15 research universities.

The estimate is aggregate; the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is far more selective at under 10%, and Nursing runs closer to 40%. Most academic programmes admit qualified Indian applicants who clear the published minimums, so eligibility is the binding factor rather than test scaling.

Reality check: A high headline acceptance rate does not extend to Veterinary Medicine, Nursing or the MBA at UPEI, where seats are capped and interviews or portfolio reviews screen further. Indian applicants targeting these three streams should build a stronger academic record than the recommended minimum.

University of Prince Edward Island Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UPEI sits on a compact 134-acre campus in central Charlottetown, a 10-minute walk from the waterfront and the provincial capital’s core.

  • Location and transit: Free student pass on T3 Transit (Charlottetown’s public bus network) reaches the downtown core and residential belts in 15 minutes
  • Housing: On-campus residence costs CAD 5,800 to CAD 7,900 (INR 4.03 to 5.49 lakh) for eight months; no international housing guarantee, so an early housing application is essential
  • Notable facilities: Atlantic Veterinary College teaching hospital, Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre, Robertson Library, plus the L.M. Montgomery Institute for Canadian literary studies
  • Indian community: Active UPEI Indian Students Association, festival celebrations for Diwali and Holi, and a Sikh Students Association

What Indian students say: Small class sizes make professor access easy; Charlottetown is safer and quieter than large metros; on-campus part-time roles in the library and dining hall are competitive but reachable for first-years.

UPEI Scholarships 2027

UPEI runs one auto-considered entrance award for international undergraduates and several programme-specific graduate scholarships. There is no dedicated India-only award, but the entrance award has a strong record with Indian recipients.

Planning note: The International Entrance Award goes to under 15% of admitted international students in a typical cycle, so Indian applicants aiming for the top CAD 3,000 tier should push their Class 12 aggregate above 90% and include a strong Statement of Purpose with the admission file.

University of Prince Edward Island Rankings 2027

UPEI’s strongest ranking is in Veterinary Science subject-level, where the Atlantic Veterinary College sits inside the world’s top 50, while the overall world rank tracks in the 1000-1500 band as a small-sized comprehensive university.

The Maclean’s magazine national comparison places UPEI in the Primarily Undergraduate category, where it typically sits inside the top 10 for teaching quality and student support.

Key insight: For Indian applicants who need a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with strong PGWP eligibility and a globally credible subject ranking, UPEI’s #46 Vet Science placement gives a clearer employer signal than its overall world rank alone would suggest.

UPEI Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UPEI does not run a centralised placement cell; the Career Services team supports students through career coaching, job fairs and co-op referrals. Employment outcomes are strongest in Vet Med, Nursing and Sustainable Design Engineering.

  • Employment within 6 months (graduate outcomes): Not officially disclosed; Nursing and DVM graduates sit near full employment as per program cohort surveys
  • Median MBA starting salary (Canada market): CAD 65,000 to 85,000 (INR 45.20 to 59.11 lakh) as per Canadian MBA market medians
  • Representative recruiters (sector-labelled): Provincial Government of PEI, Health PEI, BioVectra, Cavendish Farms, Vetstrategy clinics
  • Post-Study Work Permit: Up to 3 years for programmes of 2 years or more; graduates eligible for the Atlantic Immigration Program PR route
  • Careers support: Experiential Education office runs on-campus recruitment days, LinkedIn coaching, and CV workshops each semester

Insider note: Indian graduates in Vet Medicine and Nursing move fastest into PR because both fall on the Atlantic Immigration Program’s high-demand list, and PEI’s provincial nominee stream prioritises UPEI alumni already working in the province.

UPEI vs Peer Universities

The comparison below sets UPEI against three Atlantic-Canada peers and one large national reference, all commonly shortlisted by Indian applicants seeking affordable Canadian publics.

UniversityQS Rank 2027CD Study Abroad 2026Avg Annual PG FeeDifferentiator
University of Prince Edward Island1001-1200 band#72CAD 15,000 (INR 10.43 lakh)Top-50 Vet Science, cheapest Atlantic option

Dalhousie University#301#20CAD 24,000 (INR 16.69 lakh)U15 research member, wider PG portfolio

UPEI stands out for the combination of a top-50 subject ranking in Veterinary Science, one of the lowest total-cost profiles among Canadian publics with an English-medium curriculum, and direct alignment with the Atlantic Immigration Program.

Memorial and Dalhousie beat it on world rank and PG breadth, but UPEI wins on cost per year, class size and PR-friendly geography for the two flagship fields.

Choosing UPEI works best when the applicant is aiming at Vet Science, Nursing, Sustainable Design Engineering or a one-year MBA on a tight budget, and values a small campus over a large research university. The total annual investment of CAD 33,000 to 51,000 (INR 22.95 to 35.47 lakh) undergraduate, or CAD 27,000 to 51,000 (INR 18.78 to 35.47 lakh) master’s, sits at 40% to 60% of a Toronto or Vancouver equivalent, and Charlottetown routes graduates directly into Canadian PR pathways through the Atlantic Immigration Program.

It is not the right fit for applicants targeting a Global MBA brand, aiming to work in a large metro tech ecosystem, or wanting a top-300 world-ranked research university on the CV. In those cases, Dalhousie University or the University of Waterloo is the stronger shortlist.

University of Prince Edward Island FAQs

Ques. What English-taught bachelor programmes does UPEI offer beyond the top 5 listed?

Ans. UPEI offers over 20 English-taught bachelor programmes including Bachelor of Arts (with 25 major/minor combinations), Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Sustainable Design Engineering, Bachelor of Child and Family Studies, and Bachelor of Kinesiology. All undergraduate teaching runs in English, and there is no French-medium requirement for Indian applicants outside the optional French Immersion route.

Ques. How much can Indian students work part-time while studying at UPEI?

Ans. International students at UPEI can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic terms under Canada’s current study permit rules, and full-time during scheduled breaks. On-campus roles at the Robertson Library, Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre and dining halls have no hour cap. Minimum wage in Prince Edward Island is CAD 16.00 per hour as of 01 April 2026, giving typical part-time earnings of CAD 1,200 to 1,600 monthly.

Ques. Can Indian applicants get an IELTS waiver at UPEI?

Ans. Yes, UPEI grants IELTS or TOEFL waivers to Indian applicants who completed Class 12 in a CBSE, ICSE or recognised state-board English-medium school with a Class 12 English mark of 70% or higher. The waiver is programme-specific and not guaranteed, so applicants should email inte@upei.ca with a scanned Class 12 marksheet before the application submission. Nursing and Vet Medicine rarely waive the test requirement.

Ques. How much is the UPEI application fee and can Indian students get it waived?

Ans. The UPEI application fee is CAD 69 (INR 4,798) for undergraduate international applicants and CAD 100 (INR 6,954) for graduate programmes. Fees are payable online during application submission. UPEI does not run a standing application fee waiver programme for Indian applicants, but occasional recruitment fair vouchers appear at EducationUSA and Study in Canada events across major Indian cities.

Ques. Which Indian banks recognise UPEI for education loan sanctions?

Ans. UPEI is a Designated Learning Institution recognised by all major Indian public and private lenders, including State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, ICICI Bank and Avanse Financial Services. SBI’s Global Ed-Vantage covers up to INR 1.5 crore for UPEI programmes, and HDFC Credila’s collateral-free ceiling for the university runs up to INR 60 lakh subject to co-applicant income.

Ques. Does UPEI require a GRE or GMAT score for master’s admission?

Ans. The GRE is not required for most UPEI master’s programmes; MSc, MEd, MN and MA admission decisions rely on academic record, English proficiency and research match. The MBA Global Leadership prefers GMAT 550 or three years of professional work experience, and the Executive MBA weighs work experience heavier than GMAT. PhD applicants in Science and Engineering may need to submit GRE if the department requests it.

Ques. How does the study permit process work for UPEI applicants from India?

Ans. Indian applicants apply for a Canadian study permit after receiving the UPEI Letter of Acceptance. The Student Direct Stream route from India requires an SDS-compliant CAD 20,635 GIC, a valid IELTS 6.0 or PTE 60 result, tuition payment for the first year, and biometrics at a VFS Canada centre. Processing takes 20 to 45 days on SDS and 8 to 12 weeks on the regular study permit route.

Ques. Are dependents allowed to accompany Indian students at UPEI?

Ans. Yes, spouses of full-time UPEI students can apply for an Open Work Permit valid for the length of the study permit under Canada’s current dependant rules for master’s, doctoral and select professional programmes. Dependent children under 17 can join on a visitor visa and access public schooling in Prince Edward Island. Financial proof of CAD 4,000 for spouse plus CAD 3,000 per child is required alongside the primary study permit file.

  • There are a lot of clubs that students can join. UPEI organizes job fairs as well. There are opportunities to volunteer.

Fees

  • I would say for an international student, having 6 courses in a semester, 10,000 CAD per semester (1 year has 2 semesters and a summer one also exists, but then you just pay for the course, no international fee (4000 per semester)). Now, it depends on your program duration.

  • There are 2 campuses overall one in Canada and one in Egypt. Library, sports center, student union center, walk in clinic, swimming pool, hockey ground, football ground and many more. There are lot of events that happen throughout the year and each of varies from time to time. There is separate student union for Indians and a common student union. There is a dance club and art club as well.

Fees

  • Each course cost around CAD 1800 and to complete the MBA course I have to take 14 courses. Additionally there is an International student fee, management fee and health insurance (Optional if you have a health card or existing insurance) and few other fee. Generally it will cost around CAD 35,000 - 37,000 CAD. For my monthly expenses the major ones are Rent, Groceries and Mobile Bill which will cost me around CAD 900 - CAD 1000 each month. Transportation for UPEI students with the student card. Most of the books for the courses I find it online for free.

Overview

I feel trapped and the university doesn’t even have a great value of education. It’s like studying in India itself except it gets you a PR. It’s best to come after bachelors that too in bigger cities like Toronto for the best experience. Here it’s way too cold, you got to walk a lots, no bus on weekends so again stuck where you are. It’s tuff.

Campus Life

The campus life isn’t fun either, there’s no place at residence and the residence fee is higher than even the tuition of a year which again dumb. There’s like a few events only Indian society organize and that’s it no fun. The library is huge but for undergrad again so useful resources or course related books only for masters which again is not there in psychology. The wifi barely works around the campus it’s only in building so you can’t go out you’re stuck.

Overview

Coming with the previous schooling in biology, I felt ready to take on the hard program of nursing. Around Christmas time, I decided to apply. The application was straight forward and did not take long. The fee was $50, and it was the best $50 I ever spent. I first received acceptance into my second choice program of chemistry, and then a few weeks later I got my acceptance into nursing.

Fees

Nursing tuition was about $7000 for the year, plus books. A lot of that was for fees, which include paying into the nursing professional fee, and a few other things that I'm still not really sure what they are. The tuition and fees are second cheapest in Canada I believe, but it doesn't look like it.

Overview

I really wanted to go into the pre-vet program because I have wanted to be a vet ever since I was three years old. Around where I live there are only two universities that offer this program and the University of Prince Edward Island was my dream university. I put all of my faith into this one school and during my grade 12 year when it was time to start applying to different schools I only applied to one.

Fees

Tuition for the pre-vet program is 6,270 a year. For myself, I applied for student loans and was granted one through the Nova Scotia government. This helps me to pay for my schooling for the year and my rent where I have decided to live off of campus this year. There are also lots of different scholarships available through the university to apply for each year.
