Western University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants must meet both academic thresholds and English-language requirements set by Western’s Graduate Studies and faculty admissions offices.
Postgraduate requirements:
- Four-year bachelor’s degree with 75-80% or CGPA 7.5-8.0/10 (recommended) from a UGC-recognised Indian university
- IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0) OR TOEFL iBT 86 (minimum 20 per skill); PTE Academic 60; Duolingo 115 also accepted
- Credential equivalency through WES, ICES, or IQAS before application upload
- GMAT or GRE required for Ivey MBA and select business programmes; GRE optional for most engineering MSc tracks
Undergraduate requirements:
- Class 12 (CBSE/ICSE/State) with 85%+ in top 6 academic subjects (recommended); 90%+ for Ivey AEO and Medical Sciences
- IELTS 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 83 (minimum 20 per skill); SAT/ACT optional, not required for most universities in Canada admissions
- English-medium bachelor’s or Class 12 may qualify for English test waiver with supporting letter
Key insight: Indian applicants with CGPA 7.5+ and IELTS 6.5+ clear the Western baseline for most research MSc programmes, but Ivey MBA selection also weighs 2-5 years of post-degree work experience and a competitive GMAT score.
Western University Acceptance Rate 2027
Western University’s overall acceptance rate sits in the 55-60% (estimated) band for international applicants across all programmes. Western does not publish a single institution-wide figure, so this estimate reflects aggregate international admission data.
Admission rates vary sharply by programme: Ivey MBA and HBA select below 20% (estimated), Schulich Medicine admits roughly 5-7% of applicants, while most graduate research streams admit funded candidates in the 40-55% band. Reliability of the headline rate is moderate; the programme-level dispersion matters more for Indian planning.
Reality check: An Indian applicant with CGPA 8.0+ and IELTS 7.0 lands well inside the admission band for most Western MSc and MEng programmes, but Ivey MBA and HBA remain selective and require strong profile differentiation.

Ivey Business School also holds the FT Executive Education Custom #1 in Canada rank for the 8th consecutive year.
Key insight: Western’s QS Top 150 rank qualifies Indian graduates for the India Public Sector Undertaking recruitment list and most Indian bank education loan Tier-1 schemes, which is a practical gain beyond employer prestige.

Western University vs Peer Universities
The peer set below compares Western University against Ontario and national-tier Canadian peers Indian students most often shortlist alongside UWO.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (CAD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Western University | #142 | #119 global, #7 Canada | 19,000 to 136,310 (12.7 to 91.1 lakh) | Ivey MBA #1 Canada on FT; strong business and health sciences |
| University of Toronto | Top 30 (approx.) | NA | Market median 25,000 to 70,000 (16.7 to 46.8 lakh) | Canada’s largest research university; CS and medicine depth |
| McGill University | Top 30 (approx.) | NA | Market median 20,000 to 60,000 (13.4 to 40.1 lakh) | Montreal campus; medicine and law reputation |
| McMaster University | Top 200 (approx.) | NA | Market median 20,000 to 55,000 (13.4 to 36.7 lakh) | Ontario peer; Health Sciences and Engineering focus |
| Queen’s University | Top 250 (approx.) | NA | Market median 20,000 to 60,000 (13.4 to 40.1 lakh) | Ontario peer; Smith MBA and Commerce reputation |
[Source: QS 2027; Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026; peer fee bands are market medians]
Western University differentiates on two axes against this peer set. First, Ivey Business School is the only Canadian school in the Financial Times Global MBA Top 100, holding #74 globally in 2026 after climbing 12 places year-on-year. Second, London, Ontario living costs run 15-20% below Toronto, which lowers the total two-year investment for Indian PG students by roughly CAD 10,000-15,000.
Western University fits Indian applicants who want a Canadian Top 150 QS brand, a MBA in Canada at Ivey, or a funded research MSc with PGWP eligibility, at a total investment of INR 25-91 lakh depending on programme. The three-year PGWP after graduation and median Ivey MBA salary near INR 83.5 lakh position UWO as a positive ROI choice for mid-career Indian professionals.
Western is not the right fit for Indian students targeting the absolute top three Canadian brands by QS rank, or for applicants seeking the lowest-cost Canadian pathway. In those cases, University of Toronto for brand or a smaller Ontario public university for cost would serve better.
Western University FAQs
Ques. What English-taught masters options does Western University offer without a GRE requirement?
Ans. Most Western University graduate programmes are English-taught and the GRE is optional or waived for the majority of MSc Engineering, MSc Computer Science (research), MMA, and MSc Health Sciences streams. GRE and GMAT remain mandatory for the Ivey MBA, HBA AEO, and MSc Financial Economics. Indian applicants should check each programme page on grad.uwo.ca since a few faculties enforce the GRE for research funding competitions even when admission does not require it.
Ques. How many hours can Indian students work during studies at UWO?
Ans. Indian students on a valid Canadian study permit at UWO can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks, following IRCC rules effective since November 2024. On-campus work has no hour limit for full-time students. The 24-hour weekly cap replaced the earlier 20-hour rule and is actively enforced through SIN-linked payroll checks across Ontario employers.
Ques. Can Indian spouses get open work permits while studying at Western University?
Ans. Spouses of Indian students at Western University can apply for an open work permit only if the student is enrolled in a master’s, doctoral, or select professional programme such as Ivey MBA or Law under IRCC’s revised 2024 rules. Spouses of undergraduate students no longer qualify by default. The open work permit is issued for the duration of the student’s study permit and allows the spouse to work for any Canadian employer.
Ques. What is the Ivey MBA interview process for Indian applicants?
Ans. Ivey MBA shortlisted candidates sit a 30-minute behavioural interview with an Ivey admissions director or alumnus, held virtually for most Indian applicants. The interview covers career goals, leadership examples, and fit with Ivey’s case-method pedagogy. Decisions release within 4 weeks of interview, and admitted candidates receive the CAD 20,000 scholarship decision in the same offer letter.
Ques. How much is the application fee at Western University for Indian students?
Ans. Western University charges an application fee of CAD 110-125 (INR 7,350-8,350) for most graduate programmes, paid online via credit card at the time of submission. Ivey MBA charges a higher fee of CAD 250 (INR 16,700). Fee waivers are available on request for Indian applicants with documented financial need, applied through the Graduate Studies office before the application deadline.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for Western University?
Ans. Western University sits on the approved Tier-1 list of SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, and Bank of Baroda education loan schemes. Loans up to INR 1.5 crore are available without collateral for admitted Ivey MBA and MEng students, and up to INR 40 lakh for research MSc applicants. Interest rates for Indian borrowers typically range 10-11% per annum with 15-year repayment windows.
Ques. Can an English-medium bachelor’s waive the IELTS at Western University?
Ans. Yes, Western University may waive the IELTS or TOEFL requirement if the Indian applicant completed a four-year bachelor’s degree fully in English at a UGC-recognised university. The waiver is not automatic and must be requested through the programme’s admissions office with a Medium of Instruction letter and official transcripts confirming English delivery. Ivey MBA does not grant this waiver and requires IELTS or TOEFL regardless of degree language.
Ques. Does UWO offer paid co-op or internship options for Indian students?
Ans. UWO offers paid co-op placements for Indian students enrolled in the MEng (Internship Stream), MSc Data Analytics, Master of Management (MMA), and Ivey HBA programmes. Co-op terms typically pay CAD 18-28 per hour, run for 4-8 months, and count towards degree credit. Research MSc students work on funded Research Assistant positions through supervisor grants rather than through the central co-op office.

- Personally it met a lot of things that I wanted. Location and university criteria wise but also because it was offering a course that intrigued me
- The multi cultural environment and various opportunities available to excel in your interested field. Western and its affiliated colleges provide various courses and programs to choose from.
- Ensure you reserve on them before applying. Overall, the studying and effort comes from an individual, the university only provides a platform to use resources available.
Dislikes
- The fact that distinction between Main Campus and its affiliates is not mentioned explicitly and clearly so ensure to do enough research and apply for the one that suits your need and interest.
- Colleges or universities don't care so social involvement aspect and balance between other responsibilities with study should be cleared before hand and one should learn to balance and prioritize things.
Overview
It was a decent learning experience and I learnt and grew but lot of things could be better but its a learning curve and it's different for everyone.
Campus Life
Its well versed. Lot of clubs available to choose from and grow. A lot of campus co curriculum available on Main campus vs the affiliates.

There were two strong reasons behind choosing the IVEY Business School for undergoing 1 year program in MBA which can be mentioned here :- 1) The Business School is one of its kind which deploys case learning method in every class apart from teaching from the conventional methodology. It helps you to uderstand the contemporary business world and shapes you to take the challenges ahead. 2) The strong alumni network of the Business School across Canada that would help getting desired job. I my opinion , making out for a job in Canada requires a strong alumni connection
Campus Life
The campus life at IVEY is really commendable and worth learning.Apart from the classroom studies, there are library, online database and other sources of recreational activities. There are clubs also run by the students including dance clubs, theatres, cricket clubs etc.Apart from clubs which lucrates the Indians a lot to be part of the same, there are some more recreational activities such as outdoor events ( sports event etc) and networking events so as to interact and build strong connections with the alumni and other professionals. As such , along with strong academics teaching the students are made to keep themselves engaged through many on and off campus recreational activities at IVEY.
Overview
I wanted to do their co-op/internship program available after 3rd year.
Fees
Around 30,000 USD for international students for my program but this varies with course.
Overview
I chose this university because it is well known and reputed in Canada for the course I wanted to study keeping in mind the tuition fee as well
Fees
43000
Overview
I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do in my life. Originally I wanted to be a dermatologist which would give me the freedom of any undergrad. I was originally accepted to all the universities I applied to for bio or biochem (as I loved bio). I got to thinking and knew bio was not a great degree to have if I didn't get into med school. A friend's relative is an actuary and the more she told me about it as well as when I took grade 12 calculus and fell in love with math I knew it was for me. Western was the only of the 4 schools I applied to where my major wasn't set in stone as well they offered me a 10,000 scholarship.
Fees
I am not international so I have no idea I took out OSAP loans which are not the best since they do not even come close to covering what I'd need them to. Many students this year had to drop out because of Doug Ford's restructuring of the loans. The 10 tuition cut was just moved to the other fees category of tuition therefore no actual tuition cut.
Overview
I opted for this college because it is well known in my area and a fantastic option for my location. My older sibling came here first. My admissions average was 85% in my top 6 university-level grade 12 courses. The admission process was easy and I only applied to western universities and affiliating colleges.
Fees
The yearly fee for my program is $14000, I've applied to OSAP to gain the half loan and half grant. Criteria is basically a family in need of financial assistance based on the yearly income of parents. This process is fairly simple yet somewhat unfair for some students whose parents are not assisting in college tuition and who make a substantial amount of money.
