UVic uses a fixed program-fee installment model for graduate degrees rather than open-ended per-credit billing, which lets Indian families forecast the total investment before landing. International entrance scholarships from CAD 5,000 are auto-awarded to top undergraduates, and graduates of most programmes qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to 3 years, one of the strongest study-to-work pathways among universities in Canada.

Exchange rate used: 1 CAD = INR 69.5 as of August 2026

Admission Status: Open (Fall 2027 intake). Undergraduate applications for September 2027 entry close on 31 January 2027, and postgraduate deadlines vary by department with most first-round deadlines falling between 1 December 2026 and 15 February 2027. The January 2027 secondary intake is Closing Soon, with select undergraduate programmes including Computer Science, Arts and Sciences closing on 30 September 2026. Indian applicants should verify the exact date on the specific programme page before submitting.

Popular Courses and Fees at University of Victoria (UVic) 2027

University of Victoria Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants need academic marks in the Indian scale plus a valid English proficiency score and, for research streams, faculty supervisor confirmation before the department reviews the file.

Postgraduate applicants:

  • Bachelor’s degree: Four-year Indian bachelor’s with 70% aggregate or CGPA 7.0/10 in a relevant subject (recommended); UVic phrases this as a B+ average in the final two years
  • English proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band under 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 (0-120 legacy scale) with no section under 20, or the post-January 2026 iBT band of 4.5 with no section under 4.0, or PTE Academic 65 with no skill under 60, or CAEL 70 with no component under 60
  • Credential verification: Unofficial transcripts at application; official transcripts and, for some departments, WES ICAP evaluation before enrolment
  • Programme-specific: MBA in Sustainable Innovation asks for 3 years of work experience and a GMAT or GRE score; MEng streams take strong CGPA in place of a test

Undergraduate applicants:

  • Class 12 marks: Minimum 70% in five academic Class 12 subjects for CBSE, ISC or state boards; Computer Science and Engineering ask for 75% including Mathematics and Physics (recommended)
  • English proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band under 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 with no section under 20; students with lower scores can enter via the UVic English Language Centre pathway

Key insight: UVic waives the English test for Indian applicants whose complete secondary or undergraduate degree was taught in English at a recognised institution, so CBSE English-medium schooling with documentary proof from the principal often qualifies as an exemption route without the IELTS retake.

University of Victoria Acceptance Rate 2027

The University of Victoria’s overall acceptance rate is approximately 64% (estimated), based on third-party admissions data aggregated over the last three cycles. UVic does not publish an official institution-wide rate; the figure reflects overall undergraduate admissions and is more competitive for Engineering, Computer Science and the Gustavson School of Business, where selection ratios sit closer to 30 to 40%.

The rate places UVic in the moderately selective band among Canadian public universities. Indian applicants with above-threshold Class 12 marks and a valid English score are typically evaluated on academics without an interview at undergraduate level.

Reality check: A 64% headline rate hides sharp programme-level variation, so Indian applicants targeting BSc Computer Science, BEng Software Engineering or the MBA should treat the effective admit rate as roughly one in three and back their file with strong grades, a targeted statement of purpose and, for PG research streams, a faculty supervisor.

University of Victoria Fees and Cost of Living for Indian Students 2027

Total annual cost for an international student at UVic runs between CAD 55,000 and CAD 75,000 (INR 38.23 lakh to 52.13 lakh) covering tuition and living, with the wider band driven by programme choice and accommodation type.

Insider note: On-campus residence with a meal plan runs CAD 12,000 to 15,000 per academic year and removes the housing hunt; shared houses in Gordon Head near campus sit closer to CAD 900 to 1,200 per bedroom and are the most common Indian student choice from year two onwards.

University of Victoria Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The 160-hectare main campus sits in Oak Bay and Saanich, a 20-minute bus ride from downtown Victoria on Vancouver Island, with ocean, parkland and hiking trails on three sides.

  • Location and transport: Campus is bounded by Ring Road and served by BC Transit routes 4, 7, 14, 15, 17 and 39; the U-Pass bundled into tuition covers unlimited transit across Greater Victoria
  • Housing: Residence guarantees a first-year international spot when the housing application is submitted by 30 April; roughly 25% of undergraduates live on campus
  • Notable facilities: The McPherson Library holds over 2 million volumes, and the Ocean Networks Canada observatory gives Ocean Sciences students access to live seafloor data feeds
  • Indian community: Around 800 to 1,000 Indian students on campus; the UVic Indian Students Association runs Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events and maintains a mentor circle for incoming students
  • Health and safety: The Health Services clinic operates on campus with international-friendly billing, and Campus Security runs a 24-hour SafeWalk escort

What Indian students say: The pace is slower than Toronto or Vancouver but that is what makes it easier to focus in the first term. Vegetarian and Jain food is limited on campus, so most students cook at home. Winters are milder than any other Canadian city, which cuts the settling-in shock.

Subject-level, UVic’s THE World Rankings 2026 place Law at #101-125 and Physical Sciences at #151-175. Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 ranks UVic Computer Science #152 globally and #10 in Canada, and Law #140 globally, #12 in Canada. Maclean’s 2026 ranks UVic #2 among Canadian comprehensive universities.

Key insight: A QS world position under 400 keeps UVic well inside the visa-eligible and employer-recognised band for Indian graduates targeting Canadian PR through the PGWP and Express Entry route; the Maclean’s #2 Comprehensive ranking carries more weight than the QS number with Canadian recruiters, who read it as a research-plus-teaching signal.

University of Victoria Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UVic reports strong post-graduation employment through its Career Services and Co-operative Education office, which runs one of Canada’s largest university co-op programmes.

  • Employment within 6 months: Approximately 90% across undergraduate and graduate cohorts (institution-reported)
  • Median starting salary (Bachelor’s): CAD 55,000 to 70,000 (INR 38.23 lakh to 48.65 lakh, market median)
  • Median starting salary (Master’s): CAD 65,000 to 85,000 (INR 45.18 lakh to 59.08 lakh, market median)
  • Recruiter sectors: Technology, ocean and climate research, public sector, engineering consultancies, biotech and law
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit: Graduates of eligible programmes qualify for a PGWP of up to 3 years, opening the Express Entry route to Canadian permanent residence
  • Co-op programme: Over 4,500 paid work terms placed each year across BSc, BEng and BCom cohorts, giving Indian students a Canadian resume before graduation

Insider note: Victoria’s local job market is skewed toward government, ocean-tech and tourism, so Indian MEng and MSc CS graduates typically relocate to Vancouver, Toronto or Calgary for the strongest starting salaries. Gustavson MBA graduates place well within BC’s clean-tech and impact-investing scene.

University of Victoria vs Peer Universities

The comparison set below covers three Canadian peer universities that Indian applicants shortlist alongside UVic, based on similar research profile, PG fee band and PGWP eligibility.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026Avg Annual PG Fee (CAD/INR lakh)Differentiator
University of Victoria#=370#258 global, #16 Canada27,603 to 41,667 / 19.19 to 28.96 lakhOcean, climate and law research strength on a mid-sized west-coast campus

Dalhousie UniversityNANAVerify at official scheduleAtlantic-coast research university with ocean and health science depth
University of CalgaryNANAVerify at official scheduleLarge energy and engineering programmes with strong industry pipeline

UVic stands out on the sustainability and ocean-research axis, where the THE Impact Rankings #=14 global position outperforms all three peers. It also holds the lowest headline PG total-program fee in the comparison for course-based MEng streams, with a published floor of CAD 27,603.

The University of Victoria fits Indian applicants who want research strength in oceans, climate, engineering or law inside a mid-sized west-coast city, at a total investment of INR 39 to 62 lakh across tuition and living balanced against a median PG salary of INR 45 to 59 lakh in the first year of work. The three-year Post-Graduation Work Permit and the Express Entry route to permanent residence make the ROI stack up strongly for applicants who plan to study in Canada and stay long-term.

It is a less obvious pick if you want a large-city campus, the very top of Canadian rankings or a heavy on-campus recruiter presence for finance or consulting, where the University of Toronto or a Vancouver-based option such as UBC will fit better. Applicants set on MBA universities in Canada with heavier work-experience cohorts should also cross-check against Ivey and Rotman before deciding.

University of Victoria FAQs

Ques. How long does the Post-Graduation Work Permit last after graduating from University of Victoria?

Ans. Indian graduates of eligible UVic programmes qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to 3 years, based on programme length. A one-year course-based MEng or the Master of Global Business typically yields a 3-year PGWP under current IRCC rules for master’s degrees, giving Indian students the runway to gain Canadian work experience and apply for permanent residence through Express Entry. Applicants must apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving the final marks confirmation.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at UVic?

Ans. Yes. Study permit holders enrolled full-time at UVic can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic terms and full-time during scheduled breaks under current IRCC rules. On-campus work has no hour cap. Popular options include research assistant roles paid at CAD 20 to 28 per hour, teaching assistantships in the second term, and part-time roles in Victoria’s hospitality and retail sectors around Fort Street and downtown.

Ques. Does UVic waive the English test for CBSE English-medium school graduates?

Ans. UVic accepts English-medium instruction as a waiver route for Indian applicants who submit a letter from the principal confirming that the complete Class 11 and 12 curriculum was taught and examined in English. Applicants who cannot secure the letter must submit IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band under 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 with no section under 20. Individual graduate departments may still require a test.

Ques. Is GRE or GMAT mandatory for UVic Master’s admissions?

Ans. Most UVic MSc and MEng programmes do not require the GRE, evaluating instead on the four-year bachelor’s CGPA, the statement of purpose and a supervisor recommendation. The MBA in Sustainable Innovation typically requires a GMAT or GRE, though it publishes waiver criteria for applicants with 5+ years of strong professional experience or a quantitative bachelor’s degree. The Master of Global Business does not require a test.

Ques. What is the application fee for international students at UVic?

Ans. The international application fee at the University of Victoria is CAD 183 (INR 12,724) at both undergraduate and graduate level, paid online at the time of submission and non-refundable regardless of decision. Applications are not processed until the payment clears. Indian applicants should budget for the fee per programme applied to, and UVic does not run a general application fee waiver for international candidates.

Ques. Which Indian banks and NBFCs approve education loans for UVic?

Ans. UVic sits on the pre-approved list of SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, Avanse, InCred and Auxilo, which lend up to INR 1.5 crore for master’s programmes with variable rates linked to MCLR. Public sector banks require collateral for tickets above INR 20 to 40 lakh, while HDFC Credila, Prodigy and MPOWER offer unsecured loans against the admit letter for eligible course-based master’s degrees.

Ques. How much money must Indian applicants show as financial proof for a UVic study permit?

Ans. IRCC requires Indian applicants outside Quebec to show tuition for the first year plus a set living-cost minimum for the applicant, currently in the CAD 20,000 range, refreshed annually by IRCC. Bank balances, education loan sanction letters and Guaranteed Investment Certificates from designated Canadian banks all count as proof. Financial documents should be dated within the six months before submission for the strongest study permit outcome.

Ques. Are transcripts through WES mandatory for UVic graduate admissions?

Ans. WES ICAP evaluation is not universally required across all UVic graduate departments. Many programmes accept scanned Indian transcripts and consolidated marks statements uploaded through the application portal, with attested originals requested only after the offer. Some departments in Engineering & Computer Science and Business ask for WES for CGPA verification, so Indian applicants should confirm the requirement on the specific programme page before ordering the evaluation.

Overview

I already lived in Victoria, so it was an option that is close to home. I also received a GPA-based entrance scholarship of $3000, which motivated me to continue at UVic. I like the student engagement and different options for clubs/activities/events that are available, and the campus is quite lovely, especially in the sun. We are also very close to beaches and water, which is great. The psychology program is great and has lots of options such as co-op and honours to elevate your degree. Many of the profs that I’ve had are absolutely incredible. I definitely haven’t had the busy, extra-curricular-filled experience that some students may have, but I have benefited from the support and resources provided by Uvic numerous times. I have learned a lot and generally enjoyed my classes and experience so far.

Campus Life

So many clubs and course unions available, and many extracurriculars of various kinds, including, but not limited to, sporting events. Uvic is a research centred university, so there is a lot of support available in this regard. Wifi available all over campus, and many, many different study locations, both inside and outside.

Overview

The overall experience has been amazing. As the class size is smaller, we were able to forge personal relationships with our faculty and others in the cohort. The class is more like a small family. I have been fortunate to have made great friends on the campus. I wish the placement and Career cells of the college were more active.

Campus Life

The campus life is truly amazing. The campus is spread over ridges, parks and protected gardens. One feels very close to the nature. The campus offers premium services of gymnasium, other sports at cheaper rates. Part of the yearly fee.

Overview

UVic is one of the most popular universities in Canada given it's great reputation and location. It's also one of the oldest universities in Canada. It offers three specializations under it's Bcom program i.e Service Management, entrepreneurship and International Management. Students can further advance into fields such as investment banking, human resources etc thus proving to be a very versatile program for students not sure what they wanna pick initially.

Overview

Close to home, friends and family and a great city and well respected school. Transferred to this school from another because it had a great reputation for teaching as well as community. Easy application process and average fees to apply. Went into this school after 1.5 years at a different university.

Fees

Tuition is generally around $550 per course or $650 per computer science or engineering courses along with $400 for medical and dental (unless you opt-out) and about $200 per semester in student fees and $80 per semester on a bus pass (required) as well as athletic fees and others. Usually, if you're in a full course load not with engineering it is around $6000 per year

Overview

Uvic is my hometown university which I have always planned to attend as a result of cheaper expenses while living at home. I also applied at the University of Alberta but then decided to stay home to keep living costs lower. While applying to the two combined schools I spent $200 on application fees.

Fees

I received a scholarship from the school for my grades. The fee of my program is around 6,000 per year, however, it had not been necessary for me to take out any loans. 1st year I received an entrance scholarship of $2,000 and have applied for many other scholarships which I have not heard back from.

Overview

It had the program I wanted, affordable, and close to home. I felt that it was a decent size and that it would be a good university to have on my CV. I find the campus to be very beautiful as well as the people very easy to collaborate with!

Fees

You pay tuition by end of the first day of your new semester. It is around three thousand dollars a semester but you get charged for random things like being a day late to hand in your tuition check and parking is awful. Very few classes have a materials charge.

Overview

I chose UVIC for its sociology program. I want to continue on to study healthcare management and I found this program to combine statistical and management based studies within its sociology degree.

Fees

The fee structure is average university price; additional charges support clubs and campus movements, and the brand new gym costs less than a regular gym, at $106 for 4 months.

Overview

I am from the Yukon and this school had a nice close location. The department also had a very good reputation. I also liked the course selection as compared to other universities that I was considering.

Fees

Tuition was due at the end of the first month of each semester. I find it less expensive than the tuition of other schools. We paid athletic fees etc. and also each co-op term you undertook cost you a fee.

Overview

The location, being on the Vancouver Island. The population is relatively small. The food options, many options for vegans/vegetarians on campus. The program, one of the only colleges to offer a program similar to pre-med in Canada.

Fees

The tuition is very low, being around $5000 CA per year. However, if you plan to live on campus, it can get pretty pricey, at around $12000 a year.

Can I get a work permit while studying? Can my spouse also get a work permit?
P

Yes, as an international student at the University of Victoria, you can apply for a work permit under certain conditions. If you are enrolled in a full-time program, you can work on-campus without a permit and off-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during scheduled breaks. You can also check out various scholarship by clicking here

Regarding your spouse, they can apply for an open work permit, allowing them to work in Canada while you study. This application can typically be made at the same time as your study permit application. Be sure to check the latest regulations on the Government of Canada’s immigration website for specific requirements and processes.
