The University of British Columbia Bachelor of Applied Science Materials Engineering is a four-year on-campus engineering degree at the Vancouver campus. Indian applicants need Class 12 with a minimum of 85% in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English. International tuition runs at CAD 1,789.18 per credit (INR 1,19,981 per credit) with a September 2027 next intake.

The programme trains engineers to design metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites for aerospace, biomedical, mining, and clean-energy applications. Students work inside AMPEL (Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory) and the Centre for Metallurgical Process Engineering. It suits Indian PCM students who want laboratory-heavy design work over pure software or civil paths.

  • Direct entry into the materials specialisation begins in year two after a shared first-year engineering foundation.
  • The optional co-op stream places students at Esso, BC Hydro, Toyota, Imperial Oil, and SNC-Lavalin for up to twenty months of paid work.
  • Graduates qualify for a three-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) as university bachelor’s degrees are exempt from the November 2024 field-of-study rule.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the September 2027 intake are Not Yet Open. The undergraduate application portal opens in early October 2026. International student deadline: 15 January 2027.

Indian applicants targeting scholarships must submit by 1 December 2026, which unlocks automatic review for the International Major Entrance Scholarship and Outstanding International Student Award.

All INR conversions in the article use a conversion rate of CAD 1 = INR 67.07 as of July 2026. Rates fluctuate daily, verify before applying.

  • Year 2 sits at the highest credit load because the materials core begins with MTRL 200-series thermodynamics, transport, and structure courses.
  • Ancillary fees add roughly CAD 1,200 (INR 80,485) per year covering AMS student society, U-Pass BC transit, and mandatory iMED international health coverage.
  • The one-time application fee for international undergraduates is CAD 118.50 (INR 7,948) and is non-refundable.
  • Tuition is billed each September and January, giving Indian families two payment windows per academic year.

Cost of Living in Vancouver for Materials Engineering Students

Vancouver ranks as one of the three most expensive cities in Canada, driven largely by rent within the West Point Grey and Kitsilano corridors around campus. UBC estimates non-tuition costs of CAD 1,400 to CAD 1,800 (INR 93,898 to INR 1,20,726) per month excluding rent.

ROI reality: Materials Engineering hits an all-in four-year cost near INR 2.35 Crore including living, against a mean graduate base salary of CAD 1,01,306 (INR 67.94 Lakhs) at year one, giving a payback window of roughly four working years if a PGWP-linked role is secured on time.

UBC Materials Engineering Admission

UBC runs a single-intake calendar for the Bachelor of Applied Science, meaning Indian applicants have one shot per year at the September Winter Session. Selection is competitive against the general Applied Science pool, with placement into the Materials Engineering specialisation confirmed at the end of year one.

Academic Eligibility

UBC evaluates Class 12 marks against Faculty of Applied Science subject prerequisites, with strong weight on Mathematics and the physical sciences. The Personal Profile essay carries roughly 40% of the admission decision alongside grades.

RequirementUBC StandardIndian Equivalent Guidance
Class 12 aggregateMinimum 85% overallApproximately CGPA 8.5 on 10 or First Class with Distinction on any Indian board (CBSE, CISCE, or state).
MathematicsPre-calculus and Calculus at grade 12 levelCBSE Mathematics (041) or ISC Mathematics with 85% or higher; Applied Mathematics (241) is not accepted.
PhysicsGrade 12 physicsCBSE or ISC Physics with 85% or higher.
ChemistryGrade 12 chemistryCBSE or ISC Chemistry with 85% or higher.

Personal ProfileSix short-answer essays on impact, leadership, and adversityIndia-specific extracurriculars (Olympiad medals, community projects, robotics contests) are read favourably.

Grade equivalence is approximate; UBC uses in-house credential evaluation, and if further verification is needed, World Education Services (WES) sets the official Indian-to-Canadian conversion.

English Language Proficiency

English language competency must be demonstrated through one of nine accepted routes. Indian applicants from English-medium schools with three years of full-time instruction may qualify for a waiver, though most still submit a test score.

TestOverall MinimumPer-Component Minimum
IELTS Academic6.56.0 in each of Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking

Note: TOEFL iBT moved to a 1.0 to 6.0 band scale on 21 January 2026. UBC lists both the 0 to 120 and the 1 to 6 requirements above; both scales are reported during the 2026 to 2028 transition. Verify the current requirement on the official admissions page before applying.

  • Indian applicants typically clear IELTS 6.5 in one attempt if Class 12 English is above 80%, so start the eight-week prep window in June of Class 12.
  • The Duolingo English Test suits Tier-2 city applicants because it runs from home and returns scores in 48 hours at a fraction of IELTS cost.
  • Speaking is the hidden barrier for many CBSE applicants; targeted mock-interview prep matters more than reading or listening drills.
  • Score validity is 24 months from test date, and UBC accepts scores taken after 1 January 2024 for the 2026-27 cycle.
Tip for Indian students: Submit by the 1 December 2026 scholarship deadline even if English test scores are pending, since UBC lets you upload results separately by 15 February, and the earlier academic submission unlocks a larger scholarship pool.

UBC Materials Engineering Application 2027

Applications open on 5 October 2026 through the UBC applicant portal and close hard on 15 January 2027, with no rolling waves. Materials Engineering placement is confirmed at the end of the shared first-year engineering programme, not at the point of application.

Application Windows for the September 2027 Intake

IntakeExpected DeadlineStatus
September 2027 (Winter Session Term 1)15 January 2027Portal opens 5 October 2026; scholarship-priority cut-off 1 December 2026.

UBC operates only the September intake for the Bachelor of Applied Science, so January and May start dates are not available for Materials Engineering entrants.

Documents Indian Applicants Must Ready

  • Class 12 predicted grades or interim results, uploaded through the applicant portal by 15 March 2027.
  • Final Class 12 mark sheet, sent directly by CBSE, CISCE, or the state board once results are declared.
  • English proficiency score (IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, PTE, CAEL, or Cambridge), received by 15 February 2027.
  • Personal Profile responses covering leadership, community impact, adversity, and academic passion within the online form.
  • Passport bio-page scan for identity and international-fee tier verification.
  • Non-refundable application fee of CAD 118.50 (INR 7,948) paid via international credit card.

Personal Profile Strategy

The Personal Profile is scored by trained readers alongside grades, and Indian applicants who describe hands-on materials or metallurgy exposure (workshop internships, science fair projects, IIT-JEE prep) score higher than those who list only tuition centres. Answer in first person with concrete outcomes rather than adjectives.

  • Cap each written response at the 200 to 400 character window UBC provides; going right up to the limit is not required.
  • Highlight at least one project or role directly relevant to materials, metallurgy, manufacturing, or sustainability.
  • Reference India-specific initiatives (Atal Tinkering Labs, INSPIRE, YHAI expeditions) since UBC actively values geographic and cultural diversity in the pool.
Application tip: Class 12 board results usually publish in May, well after the 15 January UBC deadline, so applicants must submit on Class 11 finals plus Class 12 mid-terms; a strong pre-board score in Physics and Mathematics is the single largest lever inside your predicted grades.

UBC Materials Engineering Scholarships 2027

UBC funds international undergraduate entrants through automatic-consideration awards plus a leadership-nomination track that carries the largest ticket size. Materials Engineering applicants compete inside the general Applied Science pool, not against a separate engineering-only funding envelope.

ScholarshipAmount (CAD)Amount (INR)Eligibility and Term
International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES)CAD 10,000 to CAD 25,000 annuallyINR 6.71 Lakhs to INR 16.77 Lakhs annuallyAutomatic review; renewable for up to three additional years if academic standing is maintained.

  • Applying by 1 December 2026 is the single most important lever, since automatic awards are only assessed against that pool.
  • Scholarship decisions are released between mid-February and end April, well after admission offers begin rolling in late January.
  • Renewal of IMES and the Gould Scholarship requires an 80% sessional average in each subsequent year, so Materials Engineering GPA discipline matters year over year.
  • Nominated Karen McKellin candidates complete a separate long-form application after being shortlisted by their school or country counsellor.

External Funding for Indian Applicants

UBC-external routes fill the gap where entrance awards fall short of full tuition, and Indian families commonly stack one external award onto an IMES.

  • Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarship (up to USD 1,00,000, INR 84 Lakhs) for candidates below 30 with strong Class 12 and undergraduate ambitions.
  • KC Mahindra Post-Graduate Scholarship targets masters applicants and is not applicable at the BASc stage.
  • JN Tata Endowment loan-scholarship (up to INR 10 Lakhs), open to Indian nationals with a UBC admission offer in hand.
Scholarship reality: Even the top IMES band of CAD 25,000 covers only about 38% of first-year tuition at UBC Materials Engineering, so Indian applicants should plan on stacking at least one external award or education loan to keep the cash outlay manageable.

UBC Materials Engineering Salary 2027

Materials Engineering graduates from UBC exit into a mid-six-figure Canadian salary band because they compete less for software roles and more for scarce metallurgical, mining, and biomaterial engineering seats. The UBC-published mean base salary sits at CAD 1,01,306 (INR 67.95 Lakhs) per year.

Career PathAnnual Salary (CAD)Annual Salary (INR)

  • Take-home varies with British Columbia provincial tax; salaries above CAD 1,00,000 typically net roughly 68% to 72% of gross, so run the CRA payroll calculator before signing an offer.
  • Major employers include Esso, BC Hydro, Toyota, Imperial Oil, SNC-Lavalin, Barrick Gold, US Steel Canada, Stemcell Technologies, TC Energy, and the National Research Council.
  • Engineering-wide UBC employment sat at more than 96% for full-time work within six months of graduation across the 2022 cohort.
  • Co-op alumni consistently earn CAD 5,000 to CAD 8,000 (INR 3.35 Lakhs to INR 5.37 Lakhs) more in year one than non-co-op peers due to prior work experience.

Co-op Placements and Employer Access

The optional Engineering Co-op Programme places Materials Engineering students on paid four-month rotations across up to twenty months of the degree. Placements at Tesla, Intel, and Ballard Power are documented on the Engineering Co-op employer list.

Also Check: UBC Placements and Recruiter List

ROI reality: Materials Engineering does not clear a first-year offer above CAD 1,20,000 the way UBC Computer Science does, but the roles are more PGWP-secure and less exposed to hiring-freeze cycles that hit tech in 2024 and 2025.

Canada Visa UBC Materials Engineering

Indian students admitted to UBC Materials Engineering apply through the regular Canadian study permit route, since the Student Direct Stream (SDS) closed for Indian nationals in November 2024. The full workflow now requires a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from British Columbia before study permit lodgement.

  • Study permit government fee is CAD 150 (INR 10,061) plus biometric enrolment of CAD 85 (INR 5,701).
  • Minimum proof of funds for a single applicant is CAD 22,895 (INR 15.36 Lakhs) excluding tuition, plus one year of tuition prepaid or in a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).
  • Processing time from India runs 8 to 12 weeks; apply within four weeks of accepting the UBC offer to hit the September start.
  • Graduates qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This permit runs three years since university bachelor’s degrees are exempt from the November 2024 field-of-study restriction.
  • Spouses of Materials Engineering degree students remain eligible for an open work permit (OWP), and dependent children can attend K-12 school without a separate study permit.
  • After three years of skilled Canadian work under NOC TEER 1 codes, PGWP holders can apply for permanent residency through Express Entry, Canadian Experience Class, or the BC PNP Tech stream.

Read More: Study in Canada Guide for Indian Students

Visa reality: The Materials Engineering BASc is one of the safer PGWP investments for Indian applicants, because it sits inside a bachelor’s degree category exempt from field-of-study cuts, unlike two-year college diplomas that lost PGWP access in the 2024 policy revision.

UBC Materials Engineering Ranking 2027

UBC ranks inside the global top 50 across the four major aggregators, and its materials-adjacent disciplines punch above the overall institutional band. The Mineral and Mining Engineering ranking (which shares faculty and lab infrastructure with Materials Engineering) sits inside the global top ten.

  • The Mineral and Mining Engineering top-ten position matters because MTRL and MINE share AMPEL laboratory infrastructure, thesis supervisors, and industry sponsors at UBC.
  • UBC sits 89 places ahead of IIT Bombay (#134) in the QS 2027 overall table, giving Indian applicants a measurable brand upgrade for international recruiters.
  • Ranking has stayed stable at #3 in Canada across QS, THE, and Collegedunia over the last five annual cycles.
  • UBC appears in 52 subject rankings in QS 2026, the highest of any university globally, which signals breadth beyond just the flagship engineering disciplines.

Check Out: UBC Complete Ranking Breakdown

Honest take: The direct Materials Science and Engineering subject rank for UBC is not published in QS 2026, so the top-ten Mining and Minerals rank is the strongest neighbouring proxy Indian applicants can use to gauge lab strength and industry pull.

UBC Materials Engineering suits Indian PCM students who prefer laboratory design and industrial process work over software or civil paths, and who can commit to a 147-credit programme without transferring after year one. The single decision-driver is whether the family can absorb the roughly INR 2.35 Crore all-in four-year cost against a first-year Canadian salary near INR 68 Lakhs, since the PGWP recovery window sits at four to five working years.

UBC Materials Engineering FAQs

Ques. Is UBC Materials Engineering a direct-entry programme for Indian students in 2027?

Ans. No, UBC admits Indian applicants into a shared first-year Bachelor of Applied Science, and Materials Engineering placement is confirmed only at the end of year one, based on first-year performance and student preference.

Ques. What Class 12 percentage does UBC Materials Engineering require from CBSE students?

Ans. UBC expects a minimum Class 12 aggregate of 85% with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English, though competitive Materials Engineering applicants usually land in the 88% to 92% band across the CBSE and ISC boards.

Ques. Does UBC Materials Engineering guarantee co-op work terms for international students?

Ans. Co-op is optional and competitive; students apply to join at the end of year two, and admitted co-op students then complete four-month paid rotations totalling up to twenty months with employers such as Tesla, Intel, BC Hydro, and Ballard Power.

Ques. Can I fund UBC Materials Engineering entirely through scholarships?

Ans. Full funding is rare; even the top IMES band of CAD 25,000 (INR 16.77 Lakhs) covers only about 38% of first-year tuition, so most Indian students stack IMES with an external award such as JN Tata Endowment plus an education loan.

Ques. Is a UBC Materials Engineering BASc still eligible for the three-year PGWP after 2024 rule changes?

Ans. Yes, university bachelor’s degrees remain exempt from the November 2024 field-of-study restriction, so a UBC Materials Engineering BASc grad qualifies for a Post-Graduation Work Permit up to three years long once English language proof is filed with the application.
