University of New Brunswick is a public research university in Fredericton, Canada, founded in 1785 and ranked #677 globally in QS World University Rankings 2027. It is Atlantic Canada’s oldest English-language university and drives close to 75% of publicly funded research in New Brunswick province.

UNB offers over 75 undergraduate and 60 graduate programs across engineering, computer science, business, nursing and forestry, all taught in English. The Fredericton campus enrols roughly 10,000 students from more than 100 countries, with strong Indian representation in MEng, MSc Computer Science and MBA cohorts. Popular pathways for Indian applicants include the flagship MBA, Master of Computer Science and Master of Engineering streams, plus the BScE for undergraduate engineers. Direct-entry admission is available for CBSE and CISCE applicants, and UNB accepts three intakes each year, so admission timelines stay flexible for Indian students planning around the Canadian study permit cycle. Applicants can benchmark UNB against other top universities in Canada before deciding.

University of New Brunswick Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

UNB publishes a 40% Class 12 floor for Indian applicants, but competitive admission cutoffs sit materially higher for engineering, computer science and nursing.

Postgraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university with at least 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 in the final two years (recommended); AICTE/UGC-recognised institutions accepted
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 85 (0-120 legacy scale) or 4.5 (1-6 new scale), PTE Academic 59, or Duolingo English Test 115
  • Credential evaluation: WES ICAP or IQAS recommended for all Indian transcripts; two academic references and statement of purpose required
  • MBA extras: Minimum 2 years work experience; GMAT optional (median accepted score 550)

Undergraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 completion from CBSE, CISCE or a recognised State board with 70% aggregate; 75% for Engineering and Nursing (recommended); subject prerequisites apply
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent; Nursing, Education and Arts require IELTS 7.0. Waiver available for CBSE/CISCE applicants who scored 75% or higher in Class 12 English

Key insight: The Class 12 English waiver is the single biggest saved cost for CBSE and CISCE applicants; students who cleared board English at 75% do not need to sit for IELTS at all, saving INR 17,000 in test fees and two weeks of prep.

University of New Brunswick Acceptance Rate 2027

The UNB acceptance rate sits at 79%, placing the university in the moderately selective band across Canadian public research universities. The rate is derived from published admissions data and reflects overall admissions across all faculties for the most recent cycle.

Program-level admission is materially tighter: Nursing, Software Engineering and the MBA cohort each admit selectively based on prerequisites and interviews. Indian applicants with a Class 12 aggregate above 75%, or a bachelor’s above 65% with a clean statement of purpose, historically convert offers at a rate above 85%.

Reality check: A 79% acceptance rate does not mean easy admission for competitive faculties. As per past Indian intakes, MEng and MSc research streams filter heavily on GPA and faculty supervisor match, not the headline institutional rate.

University of New Brunswick Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The 100-hectare UNB Fredericton campus sits on the north bank of the Saint John River, a 10-minute walk from the provincial capital’s downtown core.

  • Housing: 13 residence buildings offering traditional, suite and apartment styles; international students are prioritised for first-year on-campus placement, with annual residence costs of roughly CAD 12,000 to CAD 15,000
  • Libraries and research: Harriet Irving Library plus 11 Canada Research Chairs and 60+ specialised research centres in cybersecurity, ocean engineering and forestry
  • Sports and recreation: Currie Center gym, UNB Reds varsity teams, curling rink and outdoor ice pad included in the student activity fee
  • Indian community: UNB Indian Students’ Association hosts Diwali, Holi and cricket tournaments; a full-service Indian grocery store operates 5 minutes from campus

What Indian students say: Housing is easy to secure if you apply by June, but off-campus winter transport can be tricky without a car. Fredericton’s small-city feel makes it far easier to focus on academics than in Toronto or Montreal.

University of New Brunswick Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UNB places career outcomes in a strong band for a mid-sized Canadian research university, aided by Atlantic Canada’s growing tech, cybersecurity and clean energy corridors.

  • Employment rate: 91% of UNB graduates employed within 6 months of convocation (Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission, latest survey)
  • Median starting salary: CAD 55,000 to CAD 75,000 (INR 38.2 to 52.1 lakh) for MS and MEng graduates; market median
  • MBA outcomes: Median post-MBA salary CAD 78,000 (INR 54.19 lakh), market median across recent cohorts
  • Representative recruiters: IBM Canada, Siemens, Bell Aliant, McCain Foods, Irving Oil and CGI, plus strong pipeline into Halifax and Ottawa cybersecurity roles
  • Post-study work: Indian graduates qualify for the 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit, and Fredericton is designated under the Atlantic Immigration Program for faster PR

Insider note: Indian alumni report the strongest recruiting for Computer Science, Cybersecurity and Software Engineering streams, with campus-adjacent employers in the Knowledge Park corridor hiring interns from second year onward.

University of New Brunswick vs Peer Universities

UNB competes for Indian applicants against other affordable Canadian public research universities, mostly outside the top-tier metros. Comparison focuses on QS rank, annual PG fee and one differentiator each.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (CAD / INR lakh)Differentiator
University of New Brunswick#67715,681 / 10.9 lakhAtlantic Immigration Program fast-track for PR
Memorial University of Newfoundland#65111,460 / 7.96 lakhLowest international fees among Atlantic universities
Dalhousie University#30821,375 / 14.85 lakhMarine research and health sciences depth
Concordia University#52128,000 / 19.45 lakhMontreal metro location and larger Indian cohort
University of Windsor#701-71025,500 / 17.72 lakhCross-border internships with Detroit auto sector

UNB stands out on cost-of-attendance and PR-track access. For Indian applicants weighing total spend and settlement outcome, the CAD 20,000+ lower graduate bill vs Concordia or Windsor is the single biggest lever, and Fredericton’s Atlantic Immigration Program eligibility shortens the PR timeline meaningfully.

The University of New Brunswick suits Indian applicants who want a research-heavy Canadian degree at a total investment near INR 30 lakh, backed by MEng, MSc CS or MBA earnings of INR 40 to 55 lakh and a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit for Indian students. Atlantic Immigration Program eligibility strengthens the PR pathway substantially.

It is not the right fit for Indian applicants targeting brand-name QS top-100 recognition or a large-metro internship pipeline. If either matters more than cost, University of Toronto or McGill sit closer to that profile.

University of New Brunswick FAQs

Ques. Does UNB waive IELTS for Indian CBSE applicants?

Ans. Yes, University of New Brunswick waives the IELTS requirement for CBSE and CISCE applicants who scored at least 75% in Class 12 English. State board students are considered case by case. The waiver applies to most undergraduate programs but not to Nursing, Education or Arts, which require IELTS 7.0 or equivalent regardless of English marks.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at UNB?

Ans. Yes, IRCC rules let international students at UNB work up to 24 hours per week off campus during regular sessions and full time in scheduled breaks. On-campus work has no cap. Popular options include library assistantships, teaching assistant roles paying CAD 20 per hour, and part-time roles in downtown Fredericton retail and food service outlets.

Ques. What is the GMAT waiver policy for the UNB MBA?

Ans. The University of New Brunswick MBA treats the GMAT as optional. Indian applicants with a first-class bachelor’s degree and 5 or more years of managerial work experience can request a formal waiver at application. A CFA Level 1 pass, CA qualification or a strong GRE also strengthens waiver approval. The admissions committee reviews each request within 4 weeks of the deadline.

Ques. Which Indian banks partner with UNB for education loans?

Ans. UNB is on the approved DLI list of SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Union Bank of India for education loans up to INR 40 lakh without collateral for engineering, MBA and computer science pathways. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER also offer no-collateral loans up to USD 100,000 for admitted UNB graduate students without an Indian cosigner.

Ques. How much financial proof is needed for the study permit?

Ans. Indian applicants must show a Guaranteed Investment Certificate of CAD 20,635 for the first year of living costs, plus first-year tuition receipt, under IRCC’s updated Student Direct Stream. Total proof averages CAD 51,990 (INR 36.12 lakh) for undergraduate and CAD 33,000 (INR 22.93 lakh) for one-year graduate programs, verified by GIC receipt and bank statements.

Ques. Are UNB degrees recognised for Indian government jobs?

Ans. Yes, UNB degrees are recognised by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to Indian bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Graduates qualify for UPSC civil services, PSU recruitment through GATE-equivalence recognition, and direct PhD entry at IITs and IIMs. The AIU equivalency certificate takes 4 to 6 weeks and costs INR 5,000, processed through the university’s international office.

Ques. Can Indian applicants bring dependents on a study permit?

Ans. Yes, married UNB graduate students can sponsor spouses for an open work permit and children under 22 for a dependent visa. Additional financial proof of CAD 4,000 for the spouse plus CAD 3,000 per child is required. Undergraduate students face a stricter review, and dependents typically wait until the primary applicant enters a co-op or full-time work stream after graduation.

Ques. What is the refund policy if the UNB study permit is refused?

Ans. UNB refunds full tuition minus a CAD 500 administrative fee if the study permit is refused before the term start date, on submission of the IRCC refusal letter. The application fee of CAD 125 is non-refundable. Refunds are processed to the original source within 6 to 8 weeks and can be routed through Flywire or Convera to avoid Indian FEMA reversal delays.

Overview

It was a great experience. Especially the overall academics and support from the staff/faculty. The MBA offered here is one of the least expensive ones in the whole of Canada however the ROI entirely depends on the student on how they get the best value out of it.

Overview

The admission process is pretty chill. They don't make a drama about it, unlike some other universities. You need your transcripts and a letter. They reply very quickly as well. There wasn't any exam to be taken for the university. I took ielts for the visa process. I didn't use anything for IELTS. Studied by myself. I chose this university because it tells you about its scholarships. And that made me hopeful that maybe I could get some. And I loved the place Fredericton and loved the aesthetic of the university itself.

Campus Life

The campus life is cool. You have multiple parties going around and many functions for different cultures too. You have many sports-playing opportunities and many hanging-out sessions. Many dog therapy sessions. The library is a five-floor building, the first floor is cafe style, the second sun a lot of books and single tables, and the third floor has lots of desks for group studies. There is also a silent room. And there is fab lab where you can 3d print for free. On fourth floor there is a very quiet room with Olden day books. On the fifth floor, you can book single rooms. The gym building is 5 floored as well. On the first floor, there's the weight room, basket ball, and badminton court. The second floor has running tracks and different rooms where Zumba and yoga all take place. The third floor is an actual gym. The fourth floor has a varsity basketball court.

Overview

The university had an Institute of biomedical engineering. The institute specialized in prosthesis research, which was what I sought to get into. I also sought to work with the professors associated with the institute to supervise my research.

Fees

Fees structure is by term. For graduate students, this is reasonable and drops after three years. Other charges include the student union, health, and dental, technology fee, facilities fee.

Overview

It's the best one in the city and affordable. I didn't want to have to move out of my home town because I don't have the money for that. I also had several friends who attended and graduated and I went to them for their opinions before applying. They all talked of the teachers they enjoyed and told me the pros and cons, helping me decide.

Fees

The structure for fees was straightforward. They are very well defined in the paperwork you get while you're applying, and are told of the charges on D2L or twitter if you follow the school. Plus the student loan people themselves will send emails about any fees.

At the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton), Dentistry has higher tuition fees compared to Psychology, and monthly living costs range from $700 to $1,500

The University of New Brunswick (UNB) Fredericton's Department of Psychology has specific requirements for admission to their Master's programs, and a B- CGPA (GPA somewhere between 2.7 and 3.0) might not be enough on its own. However, you can explore the UNB courses to learn more about the curriculum, fees, and other details.

The M.Eng. in Civil Engineering program is a course-based program offered full-time. However, you can explore the UNB courses to learn more about the curriculum, fees, and other details.
