IMS BHU Admission Process

All IMS BHU admissions are NEET-driven. There are no direct applications, management quotas, or NRI quotas for MBBS or BDS. MBBS seats at IMS BHU are allocated through the MCC All India Quota (AIQ) counselling process, governed by the Medical Counselling Committee.

MBBS Admission

MBBS eligibility requires 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, minimum 50% marks in PCB (40% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD), and a minimum age of 17 years. A valid NEET UG score is mandatory.

  • Qualify NEET UG and check All India Rank
  • Register for MCC AIQ Round 1 counselling at mcc.nic.in
  • Lock preferences and participate in seat allotment
  • Report to IMS BHU within the specified reporting window with original documents
  • Pay fees and confirm admission

The IMS BHU MBBS closing rank for the General category under AIQ in the last round of 2025 was 1,709. For OBC (AIQ), the closing rank was 2,620. Unreserved State Quota (Uttar Pradesh domicile) closing ranks are generally higher (lower competition) than the AIQ closing ranks.

MD / MS Admission

MD and MS eligibility requires a completed MBBS degree with the one-year compulsory rotating internship. NEET PG rank and AIQ counselling by MCC are the only admission routes. No institutional-level GD or interview is part of the selection process.

DM / M.Ch Superspecialty Admission

DM and M.Ch eligibility requires the relevant MD or MS degree. NEET SS is the mandatory examination. Seats are allotted through MCC NEET SS counselling. IMS BHU offers DM in Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, and Endocrinology, and M.Ch in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Surgical Oncology.

BDS, BAMS, and B.Sc Nursing Admission

BDS uses NEET UG with MCC AIQ counselling. BAMS uses NEET UG AYUSH score with AACCC national counselling or UP AYUSH state counselling. B.Sc Nursing uses the CUCET (Central Universities Common Entrance Test) or a BHU-specific entrance examination. Minimum eligibility for both is 10+2 with PCB and a minimum age of 17 years.

IMS BHU Placements and Career Outcomes

IMS BHU does not conduct conventional campus placements. Career pathways for MBBS graduates from IMS BHU are structured around postgraduate training and competitive examinations, not corporate recruitment. The IMS BHU MBBS degree from a Central University carries strong recognition nationally and internationally for further training and residency.

Alumni include senior faculty at AIIMS, leading corporate hospital specialists, and government health service officers across India. There is no mandatory government service bond for IMS BHU graduates, unlike state government medical colleges in some states.

IMS BHU Rankings

IMS BHU is ranked 6th in the NIRF Medical category 2025, making it one of the highest-ranked government medical institutions outside the AIIMS network. This rank encompasses the combined medical and clinical departments of BHU including IMS, the dental faculty, and the Ayurveda faculty.

Ranking BodyCategory2025 Rank
NIRFMedical6

A NIRF Medical rank of 6 places IMS BHU ahead of most state government medical colleges and well-recognised central institutions. The combination of NIRF rank 6, a 1,600-bed tertiary hospital, and NEET UG closing ranks around 1,700 establishes IMS BHU as one of the most competitive and prestigious government MBBS destinations in India outside the AIIMS network.

IMS BHU Campus and Infrastructure

IMS BHU is located within the Banaras Hindu University campus in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. BHU’s main campus is one of the largest residential university campuses in Asia, spread over 1,350 acres. IMS BHU occupies the medical zone of the campus, which includes the academic medical block, the Sir Sunderlal Hospital complex, and the AYUSH and dental faculty buildings.

Sir Sunderlal Hospital (SSH) is a 1,600-bed multi-super-specialty hospital attached to IMS BHU. It serves as the primary teaching hospital and handles a high volume of tertiary and quaternary care patients from UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, and MP. The hospital has over 50 clinical departments, separate emergency, trauma, and critical care units, and dedicated wards for each specialty.

IMS BHU students benefit from BHU’s campus infrastructure including multiple student hostels, a central library with extensive medical journal subscriptions, a sports complex, bank branches, post office, and a campus-wide connectivity network. The BHU campus is a self-contained township within Varanasi, and the medical zone has its own residential quarters for faculty and senior residents.

IMS BHU vs KGMU vs MAMC

NEET UG aspirants targeting top government MBBS colleges in north India commonly compare IMS BHU with King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow and Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), New Delhi. All three are government medical institutions with strong clinical infrastructure and competitive NEET cutoffs.

MAMC is more competitive than IMS BHU for the General Category (lower NEET closing rank indicates higher demand). KGMU Lucknow has a larger hospital and more MBBS seats, with a somewhat higher closing rank due to larger seat volume. IMS BHU’s NIRF Medical rank of 6 positions it very strongly on the national stage, and the Central University fee structure makes it one of the most affordable top-6 medical institutions in the country.

IMS BHU: 11 Answered Questions

Which college should I choose - IMS BHU or KGMU Lucknow?

Sabeer Chalana
Anjali Yadav

IMS BHU (Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi) vs KGMU (King George's Medical University, Lucknow) — both are excellent UP government medical colleges. here's the honest comparison:

IMS BHU: part of the Central University of BHU, one of India's oldest and most prestigious universities. excellent academic reputation, strong research culture, good faculty. Varanasi campus life is unique. admission via NEET+AIAPGET centralized counseling for BHU seats.

KGMU Lucknow: one of India's oldest medical colleges (est. 1911), largest teaching hospital in UP, excellent clinical exposure due to huge patient load. very strong for postgraduate medical education. Lucknow is a major metro with good infrastructure.

verdict: both are genuinely top-tier government medical colleges in North India. for clinical exposure and PG preparation, many prefer KGMU due to the sheer volume of cases. for academic prestige and university ecosystem, IMS BHU has the edge. if your goal is PG (MD/MS) — KGMU's clinical load may serve you better. if research/academic career is the aim — BHU's central university environment is better. location preference (Varanasi vs Lucknow) also matters.

AIIMS Delhi or IMS BHU would be the best for MBBS?

ElectricZealot

Firstly, I had the opportunity to join AIIMS, other than AIIMS Delhi, but I willingly surrendered my seat in a Peripheral AIIMS for obvious reasons. Just check the ranking of IMS-BHU (5th) in the list of Top Medical Colleges in India by NIRF. #No-Offence Secondly, although I felt disappointed about not getting into AIIMS Delhi, I never regret it, let alone the AIIMS Tag. Trust me, the BHU Tag carries much more weight. Thirdly, the only significant advantage of AIIMS was its funding. However, IMS-BHU is now funded equally as any other AIIMS, enjoying the distinction of an AIIMS-Like situation. Last but not least, I can't do justice to this question without mentioning: “MEDICAL COLLEGE IS BORING, IITians CAN ONLY HAVE LIFE!!” Life at IMS-BHU is much more entertaining, but you need to look beyond the books. To truly enjoy life, you must have real friends. It's not just the place, but the people around you that create your memories. Obviously, I have many, which you'll realize in the pics below. I've made memories that can't be summed up even in tonnes of words.

Which is better, MAMC Delhi or IMS BHU?

Namrata Das
Darshan SethiLives in Delhi

One of my cousins is a student at MAMC Delhi and here are a few highlights of the institute based on the experience she shared.

  1. Education: MAMC Delhi has an excellent academic ambiance that can even motivate the least interested ones.
  2. Location: It’s in close proximity to CP so you can visit cafés during your lunch break, have a sub, and come back. You can jog to the India Gate every morning which is also very close to the campus. Daryaganj is another famous place due to its Sunday book market.
  3. Connectivity : MAMC Delhi has great connectivity to tourist places like Kasol, Mussoorie, etc
  4. Extracurriculars: The college has excellent sports facilities like cricket, basketball, badminton, gym, swimming pool, etc
  5. Library: This is the best part of the college. MAMC Library is uniquely designed and will motivate you to become a nerd and spend your afternoons here.
  6. Campus life: The campus is small but the overall ambiance is quite friendly and gives you the best memories of your life.
  7. Reputation: MAMC enjoys a very good reputation and its Delhi University Quota in PG is another major perk that places it above IMS BHU.

Hope this helps you!

Is it a wise decision to choose IMS BHU over KGMU?

Namrata Das
Sagar Dikshitlives in Lucknow

Many people consider IMS BHU better than KGMU due to internal PG. But the truth is internal PG at IMS BHU will only give only a single attempt to get an internal seat at a low rank. Moreover, owing to the rotation system in a particular year, there might be no internal seat for a particular branch for a specific category. If you happen to belong to that particular branch, you will have to be among toppers else you won't be eligible for internal benefit or state quota. KGMU on the other hand, will give you unlimited attempts with a state quota

Also, I feel MBBS is not just about PG, but also about the holistic development of the students. That being said, the IMS tag isn't as valuable as the KGMU tag.

So, I don't think it's wise to choose IMS BHU over KGMU.

In what order would you rank MAMC, KGMU, AFMC, IMS-BHU, CMC & Grant Medical College?

Namrata Das
Akriti Guptalives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

I will try to answer your query and provide some additional information.

After the top most colleges- AIIMS, PGI, JIPMER, NIMHANS and SGPGI, these are the colleges you should try for- Medical colleges in Delhi are the best choice. Out of these, MAMC is the most desirable. It is followed by VMMC, LHMC and UCMS. Then come the medical colleges in Mumbai. KEM is a top medical college, followed by Sion and Grant. Colleges of Kerala and Madras are at par with one another. But Madras Medical College is the best among these. AFMC and CMC Vellore are great for patients, but not so much for the students.

Thus, MAMC is a great choice. I do not possess much knowledge of KGMU and IMS BHU, so I haven’t talked about them.

Why did you choose KGMU over IMS BHU and AIIMS Rishikesh?

Raktim Tarafdar
Aarti AhujaLives in Rishikesh

My friend got selected in all the 3 institutes; KGMU, IMS BHU, and AIIMS Rishikesh but chose KGMU as her first preference. She had no personal grudge against AIIMS Rishikesh but there were quite a few reasons why she did not choose IMS BHU

  • My friend was from Varanasi and she did not want to be distracted by her family and so to cut off all distractions, she refused to continue her studies there.
  • There are many flaws with the institute that go undiscovered y many but being from the same city, she did have an idea.
  • She was eager to experience a life beyond her home city and experience different cultures.

However, her decision of choosing one over the other was solely influenced by her personal inclinations. She did not find any major differences except the rural service bond which she was ready to sacrifice. She did not give much thought to AIIMS Rishikesh as it was a new institute at that time although it has grown exponentially over the years so you can give it preference too.

Ultimately, there is no major difference in each of these institutes academically and it is all based on your personal indications.

Currently, which would be a better choice, IMS BHU, AIIMS Bhopal or AIIMS Jodhpur?

Advait JoshiLives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

My sister got selected for all the 3 aforementioned institutes and was confused for a long time before making her final decision. She weighed the pros and cons of all the 3 institutes; IMS BHU, AIIMS Bhopal, and AIIMS Jodhpur, and realized that IMS BHU has the benefit of internal PG reservation but was very lacking in terms of hostel facilities. That was a factor she wasn't willing to overlook so she looked upon AIIMS Bhopal and got to know about its fast-paced development and excellent hostel facilities.

Here is a glimpse of the medical college

This is the AIIMS Bhopal hostel that provides well-furnished single rooms to its students.

AIIMS Bhopal

AIIMS Bhopal seemed to be the most promising option for her and she was excited to experience the freedom there and ended up choosing it. As for you, you can consider your proximity to home as a crucial determining factor. If you hail from UP, IMS BHU can be a suitable choice for you else AIIMS Bhopal and Jodhpur are excellent options.

If someone got selected in JIPMER, AIIMS JODHPUR, BHU or AFMC then which medical college he/she should prefer to join?

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

All these medical institutes are well-reputed.

Here are a few facts about each college which will help you make your decision-

AIIMS Jodhpur

  1. AIIMS Jodhpur was established in 2021 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GOI
  2. It ranks 16 in the NIRF India Rankings 2022: Medical
  3. AIIMS Jodhpur is newly established in comparison to the other institutions that you have mentioned. Therefore, it should not come as your topmost priority.

AFMC

  1. AFMC is the way to go if you aim to serve in the Indian Armed Forces
  2. If you wish to complete your PG just after your MBBS and have a problem with the bond of AFMC, you should not opt for JIPMER

JIPMER

  1. JIPMER is a central government college
  2. It has a good infrastructure and well-established departments
  3. For students from the northern parts, the location of JIPMER (Pondicherry) might be a negative point in terms of its distance from their hometown

IMS BHU, Varanasi

  1. It is a well-reputed medical college, no less than JIPMER
  2. It is located in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh
  3. If the location of JIPMER does not suit you, you can go for IMS BHU

The individual should, ultimately, choose after thoroughly considering location, fee structure, and personal priorities.

Which is better: IMS BHU or Grant Medical College?

Prerona Datta
Sebanti Samaddar,MBBS from Grant Medical College and Sir Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospitals (2023)

Both IMS BHU and Grant Medical College (GMC) are among the best medical colleges of India. As one of my friends studied in IMS BHU, I am familiar with the institute.

  • It is a lot better than GMC, as it is a central university which receives a lot of funds. This goes to the development of the institution.
  • They have well constructed laboratories with all the necessary updated facilities.
  • Their hostels are spacious.
  • The crowd is very welcoming and accepting.
  • They have lower fees, no bond or reimbursement and also offer internal postgraduate seats.
  • Students here get the proper opportunity to do their research work.

GMC is overrated. It has average infrastructure. The most important thing that diminished its popularity is the internal politics and compulsory bond by Maharashtra government. Though they have a good location, IMS BHU tops its academics and the opportunities provided to their students.

In what order would you rank MAMC, KGMU, AFMC. IMS BHU, CMC and Grant Medical College?

Kishalay Gupta,Studied at University College of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi (2015)

According to the reviews online by the students of these colleges, here’s what the ranking seems to be like:

  • KGMU has mostly been ranked among the top 5 institutions in India. It usually maintained its place in rank 2 or 3. This institution is 125 years old with proper educational experience.
  • AFMC is a very disciplined institution with strict rules and codes of conduct, as it has direct affiliation with Armed forces. Though being well reputed, in academics and exposure it might lag behind.
  • MAMC, Grants Medical College (GMC) and IMS BHU are at a similar level.
  • Some students claim MAMC to be slightly better than AFMC.
  • GMC is very popular in and around Maharashtra.
  • IMS-BHU is autonomous; it has the reputation of BHU tagged along which is beneficial.
  • CMC is amongst the oldest medical colleges, but their severe lack of proper facilities in this college and political disturbances have tarnished its reputation.

Therefore it is suggested you either go for KGMU or MAMC, as they will provide you with the required exposure and opportunities.

How much time take for admission process

The admission process at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), BHU takes around 6–8 weeks from the start of the online application to final admission. It begins with NEET-UG or PG score submission, followed by online registration, document verification, counselling, seat allotment, and fee payment. After the allotment of seats, students must complete verification and reporting at the institute, which takes 1-2 weeks. The entire process, including merit list preparation and confirmation, is completed before the academic session begins.
