The hostel facilities at IIT Kharagpur are equipped with essential amenities such as water coolers, washing machines, study tables, WiFi, and DC++ LAN. Rooms are generally twin-sharing, with triple-sharing also available depending on availability, and each features a separate balcony, attached or shared bathrooms, and basic furniture like beds and tables. Despite the old infrastructure, the 21 hostels provide spacious accommodation at an affordable cost of approximately 40,000 INR per year, which is included in the admission process.

Hostel accommodation is mandatory for all students, including MBA students. The food provided in the hostels includes vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, served four times daily, though the quality is generally considered average or decent, with breakfast receiving more favorable reviews. Night canteens are also available for late-night snacks. The 2,100-acre campus offers plenty of dining alternatives outside the hostels, enhancing the student experience. Regular inter-hostel competitions in sports, art, and literature foster a strong sense of community among residents.
