NFSC Nagpur Courses and Fees

NFSC Nagpur offers a single undergraduate programme: B.Tech in Fire Engineering. As a central government institution under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the college operates on a heavily subsidised fee structure that is among the lowest for any professional engineering programme in India.

CourseDurationEligibilityTotal Programme Fee
B.Tech (Fire Engineering)4 yearsClass 12 PCM, 45% (Gen/EWS), valid JEE Main scoreINR 1,32,500

Hostel accommodation for all resident students costs up to INR 36,000 per year, covering accommodation and mess charges. The application fee is INR 100 for General and OBC-NCL candidates and INR 25 for SC and ST candidates. The B.Tech programme is residential and full-time with no part-time or distance learning options.

NFSC Nagpur Admission Process

NFSC Nagpur admission is centrally controlled by the Ministry of Home Affairs and follows a two-stage process: JEE Main merit ranking followed by a mandatory Medical and Physical Standard Test conducted at the college campus.

B.Tech Fire Engineering Admission

All 60 sanctioned seats are filled through JEE Main (Paper 1) Common Rank List (CRL) merit. No management quota, NRI quota, or institutional discretionary seats exist.

  • Eligibility: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry or Biology or Biotechnology or Technical Vocational, and Mathematics, with English as a compulsory subject. Minimum 45% aggregate in PCM for General and EWS candidates. SC and ST candidates need 40%.
  • Age limit: 18 to 25 years as of January 1 of the admission year. SC and ST candidates get 5 years of relaxation. OBC candidates get 3 years of relaxation.
  • Selection: Candidates shortlisted from JEE Main CRL must appear for the Medical and Physical Standard Test at NFSC Nagpur. Failure to clear the physical test results in disqualification, regardless of JEE rank.
  • Reservation: OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, EWS 10% as per central government norms. Three supernumerary seats are reserved for J and K migrants above the 60-seat intake.

The Medical and Physical Standard Test is rigorous and eliminates a notable share of shortlisted candidates each cycle. Visual standards, physical fitness benchmarks, and general medical fitness are all assessed.

PG and Short-Term Programmes

NFSC Nagpur also conducts short-term professional training programmes for in-service fire service officers. These are not degree programmes and are not open to direct aspirants through JEE.

NFSC Nagpur Placements and Career Outcomes

NFSC Nagpur graduates enter a specialized job market where demand consistently exceeds supply. With only 60 seats per year nationally and fire safety being a mandatory regulatory requirement across oil, gas, steel, chemicals, and infrastructure industries, graduates face near-zero open unemployment at the time of degree completion.

Public sector undertakings are the primary employers. ONGC, GAIL, IOCL, HPCL, SAIL, and BPCL recruit NFSC graduates for fire safety officer and emergency response management roles. Private sector employers include Reliance Industries, Vedanta Resources, Tata Power, and large EPC contractors in the infrastructure sector. Some graduates pursue state fire service officer roles through respective state public service commissions.

Career PathwayTypical Employer TypeNotes
Fire Safety Officer (PSU)ONGC, GAIL, IOCL, HPCL, BPCL, SAILPrimary pathway for most NFSC graduates
Fire Safety Engineer (Private Sector)Reliance, Vedanta, Tata Power, EPC firmsOften higher starting salary than PSU
State Fire Service OfficerState government fire departmentsVia state PSC selection processes
Fire Safety ConsultantConsulting firms, self-practiceCommon after 5 or more years of industry experience

NFSC Nagpur does not publish standardized placement statistics in the format used by conventional engineering colleges. Career outcomes are tracked through the Ministry of Home Affairs and alumni networks rather than a formal placement cell report.

NFSC Nagpur Scholarships

NFSC Nagpur does not offer institution-level merit scholarships. Students from eligible categories can access central government scholarship schemes.

ScholarshipEligibilityHow to Apply
National Scholarship Portal (NSP) SchemesSC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS studentsscholarships.gov.in
AICTE ScholarshipsStudents in AICTE-approved programmesaicte-india.org
Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme (PMSS)Wards of ex-servicemen in professional coursesksb.gov.in

Students are advised to apply from the first year itself. Check the NSP portal for updated eligibility criteria and quantum for the 2026-27 academic year.

NFSC Nagpur Campus and Infrastructure

NFSC Nagpur occupies a 43-acre fully residential campus at Nara Road, Nagpur. All students live on campus, making the residential experience an integral part of the programme rather than an optional add-on.

The campus includes dedicated fire simulation rigs, a hydraulics and fire dynamics laboratory, a training tower for live fire drills, and a hazardous materials handling facility. These infrastructure assets are unique to NFSC and not available at any other engineering college in India.

Separate hostel facilities are provided for boys and girls at INR 36,000 per year. A central mess, library, sports grounds, and indoor recreational facilities are available on campus. The small batch size (60 students per year) results in a close-knit residential community with high faculty-to-student contact hours.

NFSC Nagpur vs GCEN Nagpur vs VNIT Nagpur

JEE Main qualifiers from the Nagpur region who are drawn to government-funded engineering with strong PSU placement outcomes often compare NFSC Nagpur with Government College of Engineering Nagpur (GCEN) and Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur. The comparison below reflects the key decision dimensions for that aspirant profile.

Which is good for fire and safety engineering, NFSC Nagpur or CUSAT?

Vivek KumarStudied Fire Safety Engineering, National Fire Service College, Nagpur (2020)

Both the institutes are government institutes and provide best in class education when it comes to Fire and safety engineering. They offer good placement opportunities in government and private organizations with good packages. However, NFSC Nagpur might be the choice to go due to the following reasons.

CUSAT:

Let’s discuss CUSAT first.

  • The institute offers both fire and safety which includes more topics related to engineering courses which are very useful from a placements perspective.
  • CUSAT is both AICTE and NBA accredited so has a good curriculum.
  • One of the downsides is that in CUSAT fire drills do not take place regularly which is required by some companies during the placement process.
  • Even though it is a very famous college in South India and has a good placement record, the infrastructure is a bit old compared to NFSC Nagpur.
  • The competition here for the Fire and Safety course is more and you need to have a good rank in the CUSATCAT.

NFSC Nagpur:

  • NFSC Nagpur has a course curriculum that is in line with the world’s top institutes with more focus given to physical standards and course syllabus.
  • The institute focuses more on the fire drill process and physical fitness along with the academic part.
  • It is a central government institute and provides the best placements for its students. The institute's alumni hold top positions in top fire organizations in India. The value of fire engineering here matches the IIT tag when it comes to fire engineering.
  • It is very much necessary to have proper time management to align yourself with daily routines. All the hard work you put in will be reaped as many top companies including PSU’s come for recruitment here.
  • BE in Fire course is a newly added one in this institute and competition is a bit less. The first few batches have passed with flying colors and have good placement records with the average package being around 10 LPA.

Considering all the facts above it is safe to say that NFSC Nagpur is the best option of the two. It is a central Govt. college under the Ministry of Home Affairs and has a rich alumni network in major public and private organizations.
