About IIM Mumbai Management Development Programme

The Management Development Programme at IIM Mumbai is a short course for working professionals. It is not a degree. IIM Mumbai lists 23 open programmes in its 2026 to 27 calendar, which is a one-year list. Each programme takes two to five days on the Powai campus, or online over a few weeks. There is no entrance exam and no CAT score. One programme costs INR 59,000 with 18% GST, and INR 70,800 if you take a campus room. IIM Mumbai is ranked #6 in the NIRF Management list for 2025. An open MDP has no campus placement, so no LPA package comes with it. You get a hard copy certificate at the end.

IIM Mumbai MDP Fees

The total fees with a campus room is INR 70,800 and the fees without it is INR 59,000. The programme fee itself is INR 50,000 for one open programme. IIM Mumbai adds 18% GST on top of that. You pay the whole amount once, before the programme starts. A campus room and meals cost INR 10,000 more, and you pay that only if you stay on campus.

If you are not working, you cannot join an open MDP.

IIM Mumbai MDP Admission Process

IIM Mumbai MDP Placements

An open MDP has no campus placement, so there is no LPA package here. IIM Mumbai gives a hard copy certificate at the end of the programme. Most people who attend already hold a middle or senior role at work. Your company usually pays, or the government pays for the DoPT programmes.

Should you pick the Management Development Programme at IIM Mumbai?

This course suits working professionals who want a short management course without leaving their job for long.

Pick it if:
You work in operations or supply chain: ten of the 23 open programmes this year sit in operations and supply chain, more than any other area.
You cannot leave your desk for a week: more than half the programmes here are online classes you attend from your office.
You want one clean payment: you pay the programme fee with 18% GST before it starts, and nothing more after that.
You want a Mumbai campus: classes sit on the Powai campus, so the factories, ports and firms you work with are in the same city.
Skip it if:
You want a finance or marketing name on your CV: this calendar is built around operations and supply chain, and few programmes sit in finance or marketing.
You want a degree or a campus job: an open MDP ends with a hard copy certificate, not a degree, and there is no placement.
You are the only one going from your office: the discount starts at five people from one organisation, so a single seat pays the full fee.
You want a long residential course: the longest programme on this calendar takes six days, and most take two or three.
Counsellor's advice
If your work is in operations, logistics or procurement, pick a campus programme here and ask your company to nominate five people. If you want a finance or marketing course, check the area column on the calendar before you pay.

Will you get a seat in an IIM Mumbai open MDP?

Pick the line that fits your work today. The answer follows what the programme office looks for.

Your work today
Middle or senior manager
Yes, you are in. IIM Mumbai pitches its open programmes at middle and senior executives. Register on the programme page and pay before the last date.
Junior manager or officer
Almost there. Any working professional can register, but most people in the room hold a middle or senior role. Pick a programme that matches your daily work.
Self employed or consultant
Almost there. You can register and pay yourself. Read the who should attend line on the programme page first, as some programmes are written for one sector.
Not in a job
Not yet. Open programmes take working professionals only. Spend a year or two at work first, then come back to this calendar.
EDITOR'S NOTE

The office reads your work profile, not a score. If a programme names one sector, like oil and gas, a person from outside it is often turned down.

FAQs on IIM Mumbai Management Development Programme

Short answers to what students ask before they apply.

How do I join an open MDP at IIM Mumbai?
Pick a programme from the 2026 to 27 calendar and fill the form on its page. Pay the fee before the first session. Your company can also nominate you by email. The office then sends the joining note.
What does one programme cost?
One open programme costs INR 59,000 with 18% GST. A campus room and meals take it to INR 70,800. Both totals sit in the fee block above.
Do I need a CAT score or an entrance exam?
No. IIM Mumbai does not ask for a CAT score or any written test for an open MDP. The programme office reads your work profile instead.
Can my company pay for me?
Yes. Your company emails the nomination list to the programme office and pays against one invoice. A discount applies when five or more people come from one organisation.
Do I get a degree at the end?
No. An open MDP gives a hard copy certificate, not a degree. It is a short course of two to five days, so it carries no campus placement.
Can I attend from my office instead of the campus?
Yes. More than half the programmes on this calendar are online, with live classes over a few weeks. The rest are held on the Powai campus in Mumbai.

Which is the best course in NITIE Mumbai among PGDIE, PGDIM, PGDISEM, etc.?

Nitin VermaPost Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2021)

The most important thing you should know is which course will prove to be better for your career, rather than which is the best overall. As some of my friends are from NITIE Mumbai, I can give you a bit of information about PGDIE and PGDIM.

  • Both PGDIE and PGDIM are flagship courses of NITIE.
  • PGDIM is considered to be a management course, whereas PGDIE is a technical course.
  • PGDIE is a more M.Tech equivalent.
  • There are also certain differences between the course curriculum at PGDIE and PGDIM.
  • PGDIE has a batch size of 120. And PGDIM has a batch size of 250.
  • Admissions for PGDIE are done through GATE scores. For PGDIM, CAT scores are considered.
  • The placements of both the courses are good. Students of both these courses sit for placements by almost the same companies.

Therefore, it is suggested that you opt for the one that suits you the best. Ask yourself where your passion lies and will a management course or a technical course be beneficial for you.

What rank do I need to get into the NITIE with a course in mechanical engineering under the general category?

Debdeep Majumder
Priyam NarsikarStudied at NITIE Mumbai (2019)

One of my friends from NITIE mentions that for the mechanical engineering course under the general category, there are different requirements of GATE score by the college for the admission process.

  • For the general category, for any branch, the score of GATE is around 650.
  • There is no branch preference given over any other branches.
  • There are different cut-offs for every year and it depends on a lot of factors.
  • The factors include the average GATE scores of the students, the total no of received applications, and many others.
  • The last and final selection depends on factors such as the 10th aggregate, 12th aggregate, graduation aggregate, GATE score, group discussion, and personal interview.
  • There are different weights for every factor and after all the calculations with their respective weights are done, the final list is prepared.

The GATE score is quite difficult to say as there can be even a waiting list if there is a requirement for the same. Therefore, if a person gets the required minimum GATE score and performs well in the GD and PI round. Then there is a possibility of getting the call as the shifting in the waiting list is not predictable.

Which type of courses are offered by the NITIE Mumbai through the GATE, MBA or MTech?

Shreya PalitPGDIM from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2019)

I have friends who study at NITIE Mumbai, and these are the 5 different courses the institute offers:

  1. PGDIM (For Industrial Management)
  2. PGDISEM (For Industrial Safety and Environment Management)
  3. PGDIE (For Industrial Engineering)
  4. PGDPM (For Project Management)
  5. PGDMM (For Manufacturing Management)

Moreover, PGDIM and PGDISEM are equivalent to MBA and require you to appear in CAT exam to enroll in either of them.

Other than these few, PGDIE, PGDPM, and PGDMM are equivalent to M.Tech. The admissions are followed by considering the GATE scores which also helps make students eligible for the regular stipend provided by the government to several of these GATE qualifiers.

On assuming the salary package, after clearing the GATE, which is better to choose an MTech in IITs or a management course in NITIE?

Debdeep Majumder
Ashutosh PathakStudies CSE at IIT Kanpur (2020)

The salary package that you receive depends on the type of organization you are part of, and your discipline of study.

For instance, the trend of artificial intelligence is continually spiking, with several similar industrial aspects. So, opting for IOT and M.Tech in fields relevant to these can undeniably bring better opportunities and higher packages in top-tier firms like Microsoft, Oracle and others.

Pursuing a management course from NITIE can also offer large pay packages if you are securing positions in top consulting services or FMCG firms.

However, comparing an M.Tech program of IIT with a management program of NITIE is not right. But, if you are talking about disciplines like Civil engineering, Mechanical engineering, or Chemical engineering, then choosing the management courses of NITIE instead, can grab you better opportunities. But then again, it depends upon how prepared and thorough you are with your academic credentials.

But don’t choose an institute solely based on its placement record. Choose the field that interests you instead.
