JBIMS MMS (Financial Management) FAQs

Ques. Is the Part-Time MMS Financial Management degree from JBIMS equivalent to the full-time MMS degree?

Ans. Yes, the Part-Time MMS (Financial Management) degree awarded by JBIMS is a University of Mumbai degree and carries the same academic value as the full-time MMS degree. The curriculum is identical to the full-time programme. Part-time students attend evening and Sunday classes over three years. Employers in the finance sector generally recognise the JBIMS brand strongly, though some may differentiate between full-time and part-time modes during hiring for front-end roles.

Ques. Is the MMS Financial Management programme useful for CFA or FRM preparation?

Ans. Yes. The MMS Financial Management curriculum at JBIMS covers core areas such as Derivatives and Risk Management, Portfolio Management, Financial Markets and Institutions, Corporate Valuations, and International Finance - all of which overlap significantly with CFA and FRM syllabi. Many students find that the programme strengthens their conceptual foundation for these professional certifications. However, the MMS is a standalone degree and does not provide exemptions from CFA or FRM examinations.

Ques. What is the difference between the JBIMS Part-Time MMS CET and the MAH-MBA CET?

Ans. These are two completely different examinations. The MAH-MBA CET is conducted by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Maharashtra, and is used for admission to the full-time two-year MMS programme. The Part-Time MMS CET is an institute-level entrance test conducted by JBIMS itself, specifically for the three-year part-time MMS programmes. Candidates applying for the Part-Time MMS do not need to appear for MAH-MBA CET.

Ques. Can I apply for the Part-Time MMS Financial Management programme if I am not based in Mumbai?

Ans. No. JBIMS explicitly states that admission to the Part-Time MMS programmes is restricted to candidates residing in Mumbai and the MMRDA region. This is because the programme requires regular physical attendance at the JBIMS campus in Churchgate, Mumbai, and is not a distance learning programme.

Ques. Does JBIMS provide placements for Part-Time MMS Financial Management students?

Ans. JBIMS does not conduct formal campus placements for Part-Time MMS students, as the programme is designed for working professionals who are already employed. Students are expected to leverage the JBIMS degree, alumni network, and skills gained to advance in their own careers. The strong JBIMS alumni network in Mumbai's financial services sector is a significant advantage for career growth in finance.

Ques. What is the minimum work experience required, and does finance-specific experience matter?

Ans. Candidates must have a minimum of two years of post-graduation work experience in an executive or supervisory capacity as on or before June 15 of the admission year. The experience does not need to be specifically in finance - any executive or supervisory role qualifies. However, candidates with finance-related experience (banking, investment, accounting, audit, etc.) tend to benefit more from the Financial Management specialisation and may find the curriculum more directly applicable to their career goals.

JBIMS Mumbai: 2 Answered Questions

What is the difference if I choose FMS (Delhi), JBIMS (Mumbai) or SJSOM-IIT Bombay over IIM-B, SPJIMR and other such institutes that charge hefty for MBA courses?

Aastha Shrimali
Advait JoshiLives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Choosing a B-school can be a tricky decision especially when it comes to ROI. I understand that ROI is one of the most important factors when it comes to MBA courses since funding your education with loans come with its own set of challenges. But the institutes that you have mentioned above certainly surpass the challenges since they belong to the tier 1 category.

You might come across articles and blogs stating that FMS or JBIMS do not provide a typical MBA environment but for me, that discussion does not even make sense. What is an MBA environment after all? You spent 2 years of your life at the campus and wish to land a good job. FMS, JBIMS, and IIT Bombay all three have good market reputations, they home the best candidates and charge minimal fees. So, if ROI is even a little bit of a concern for you, go for these colleges without any second thought or regret.
