ITNU B.Tech (AI & ML) Lateral FAQs
Q1. I have a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Can I apply for B.Tech Lateral Entry in AI & ML at Nirma University?
Ans. Yes. As per AICTE rules, Diploma Engineering candidates from any branch can apply to any Degree Engineering discipline, including AI & ML, through the ACPC DDCET process. The merit list is prepared based on the DDCET-2026 score, not the diploma branch. However, since AI & ML is a highly programming and mathematics-intensive programme, students from non-IT diploma backgrounds should be prepared to invest extra effort in the pre-requisite courses and core subjects from Semester III onwards.
Q2. What is the difference between B.Tech CSE and B.Tech CSE (AI & ML) at Nirma University for lateral entry students?
Ans. B.Tech CSE is a broader programme covering all aspects of computer science including software engineering, databases, networks, and algorithms. B.Tech CSE (AI & ML) is a more specialised programme with a focused curriculum on machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, NLP, and AI applications. Both are housed under the CSE department. For lateral entry students, the AI & ML programme offers a more industry-aligned specialisation in the rapidly growing AI sector, while CSE offers broader career options.
Q3. Does Nirma University have dedicated AI/ML infrastructure for students?
Ans. Yes. Nirma University has significant AI/ML infrastructure including a Supercomputer facility (Param Shavak, designed by C-DAC), three dedicated servers with NVIDIA GPU cards (K-20, K-40, K-80, P-100), a NU-NVIDIA Edge AI Lab established in collaboration with NVIDIA, and a Centre of Excellence in Data Science in collaboration with SUNY Binghamton University, New York. These facilities are available to all students including lateral entry students.
Q4. Is hostel accommodation available for B.Tech lateral entry male students at Nirma University?
Ans. No, on-campus hostel accommodation is NOT available for B.Tech (including lateral entry) male students at Nirma University. Hostel facility on campus is available only for female students on a 100% basis. Male students need to arrange their own off-campus accommodation. The institute provides a bus transport facility from various routes in Ahmedabad on a payment basis.

It has two papers: BE 01 (Basics of Science and Engineering - 50 questions) and BE 02 (Aptitude Test - Mathematics and Soft Skill - 50 questions). Each correct answer carries 2 marks, and there is a negative marking of -0.5 marks for each wrong answer. The last date to register for DDCET-2026 is March 30, 2026, and the exam is scheduled for April 26, 2026.
