Ques. What is the difference between the JRF (QROR) at ISI Hyderabad and a regular PhD programme? Does the JRF lead to a PhD degree?
Ans. The JRF (QROR) at ISI Hyderabad is a research fellowship that is the primary pathway to a PhD degree from ISI. Unlike a regular PhD programme where you are directly enrolled as a PhD student, the JRF involves a structured process: first, the fellow completes mandatory coursework (at least five courses in the QROR discipline), then registers for the PhD degree of ISI, and conducts original research under a faculty supervisor. At the end of the second year, the JRF is assessed for upgrade to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF). The total duration is up to 6+1 years. The PhD degree awarded is from ISI itself, which is an Institution of National Importance, making it highly prestigious.
Ques. I have a CSIR-JRF/UGC-NET fellowship. Do I still need to appear in the ISI Admission Test for the JRF (QROR) programme?
Ans. Yes. Even if you hold a nationally-awarded fellowship such as CSIR-JRF, UGC-NET, NBHM, ICMR, DST, or DBT JRF, you are still required to clear ISI's own admission test or an equivalent test conducted by the relevant JRF selection committee of ISI. The only exception to the written test is for candidates who have obtained a Master's degree from ISI within the last two years with at least 75% aggregate and no back-papers, who are directly called for interview.

Ans. JRF holders at ISI Hyderabad receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 8,000 during the first two years. At the end of the second year, the fellow is assessed by a committee for upgrade to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF). If the assessment is satisfactory, the fellow is upgraded to SRF with an enhanced stipend as per ISI rules. An enhanced Special Research Fellowship is also available for outstanding candidates at the discretion of the institute. The total duration of JRF and SRF combined shall not exceed 6+1 years.
