TCET BE Cyber Security Lateral FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between the regular B.E. Cyber Security and the lateral entry B.E. Cyber Security at TCET? Is the degree the same?
Ans. Yes, the degree awarded is identical - B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering (Cyber Security) from the University of Mumbai. The only difference is the entry point: regular students join in the first year (Semester 1) and complete 4 years, while lateral entry students join directly in the second year (Semester 3) after completing a 3-year Diploma in Engineering and Technology, completing the degree in 3 years. Lateral entry students skip the first-year foundation subjects and directly enter the core engineering curriculum. The curriculum from Semester 3 onwards is the same for both regular and lateral entry students.
Ques. Which diploma branches are eligible for lateral entry into B.E. Cyber Security at TCET?
Ans. Diploma holders from any branch of Engineering and Technology from an AICTE/Government-approved institution are eligible for lateral entry into B.E. Cyber Security at TCET, provided they have at least 45% marks (40% for reserved categories). There is no branch-specific restriction for lateral entry in Maharashtra's DSE process. However, students with a diploma in Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics, or related branches may find the transition smoother given the subject overlap. B.Sc. graduates with Mathematics from a UGC-recognised university are also eligible.
Ques. How many lateral entry (DSY) seats are available for B.E. Cyber Security at TCET, and how competitive is the admission?
Ans. The sanctioned first-year intake for B.E. Cyber Security at TCET is 180 seats. As per Maharashtra government norms, DSY lateral entry seats are typically 10% of the sanctioned intake, which translates to approximately 18 seats. Since there are no institute-level seats for DSY (all seats are through the CAP process), competition is based purely on diploma marks merit. Students with higher aggregate diploma percentages have a better chance of securing a seat. Given the limited number of seats and the growing popularity of Cyber Security, students with 70%+ in their diploma are generally in a competitive position.
Ques. Is there any entrance exam required for lateral entry admission into B.E. Cyber Security at TCET?
Ans. No entrance exam is required for DSY lateral entry admission at TCET or any other Maharashtra engineering college. Admission is based entirely on the aggregate marks obtained in the 3-year Diploma in Engineering and Technology. Students simply need to register on the Maharashtra CET Cell's DSE portal (cetcell.mahacet.org) once the DSE 2026-27 admission notice is released (expected July 2026), upload their documents, and participate in the CAP rounds. This makes lateral entry a straightforward and merit-based process for diploma holders.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing B.E. Cyber Security (Lateral Entry) from TCET?
Ans. Graduates of B.E. Cyber Security from TCET can pursue careers as Cybersecurity Analyst, Ethical Hacker/Penetration Tester, Security Operations Centre (SOC) Analyst, Network Security Engineer, Information Security Manager, and Cyber Forensics Expert. The global cybersecurity market is projected to reach USD 424.97 billion by 2030, ensuring strong demand for qualified professionals. TCET's industry connections, including the Thakur-Accenture Innovation Center and TCET-INTEL Center of Excellence, provide lateral entry students with the same access to industry exposure and placement support as regular students. Many graduates also pursue certifications like CEH, CISSP, CompTIA Security+, and higher studies (M.E./M.Tech in Cyber Security or Information Security).
Ques. Can lateral entry students avail hostel facilities and scholarships at TCET?
Ans. Yes, lateral entry students are fully eligible for hostel accommodation and all applicable scholarships at TCET. TCET offers multiple hostel options (optional, not mandatory) ranging from Rs. 6,000/month (Boys Hostel) to Rs. 14,300/month (ASPIRE Hostel), all with AC rooms and modern amenities. For scholarships, lateral entry students joining in the second year are eligible for all government scholarships (EBC, SC/ST, OBC, Minority) through the MahaDBT portal from the year of their admission. The application window for government scholarships typically opens between October and March each academic year. Students should register on mahadbt.maharashtra.gov.in promptly after admission to avoid missing deadlines.
