Tirunelveli Medical College (TVMC) is a government medical college established in 1965 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The college serves as the primary tertiary medical institution for the Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts of southern Tamil Nadu.

TVMC does not currently appear in the NIRF Medical ranked list for recent cycles, as the college submits data but has not been published in the top-ranked tier. No Collegedunia stream rank has been verified for this college.

The campus is located at Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, spanning approximately 286 acres. The attached Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TMCH) is the principal tertiary care referral centre for southern Tamil Nadu. A new 8-floor superspeciality block became operational in 2019, expanding access to DM and MCh level care.

TVMC MBBS graduates primarily pursue NEET PG for MD/MS specialisation or enter the Tamil Nadu Government Medical Services. The attached hospital’s tertiary care depth provides strong clinical training across multiple specialities.

Admission Update: TVMC MBBS admissions for the 2026-27 academic session are based on NEET UG 2026, conducted in May 2026. Tamil Nadu state quota counselling through TNHSP is under way and the 2026-27 MBBS batch is being admitted. NEET PG 2026 counselling for MD and MS seats is ongoing.

TVMC Admission Dates 2026

TVMC MBBS admissions for 2026-27 are driven by NEET UG 2026. The Tamil Nadu state quota (85% of seats) is filled through counselling conducted by the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP). The All-India Quota (15% of MBBS seats) is managed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). NEET PG 2026 governs MD and MS seat allocation. The 2026-27 MBBS batch is being admitted as counselling and document verification are currently in progress.

MBBS (Flagship)

MBBS at TVMC has 250 NMC-approved seats. All admissions are NEET-driven. The Tamil Nadu state quota (85% of seats) is allocated through TNHSP web-based counselling. The All-India Quota (15% of seats = 37 seats approx.) is managed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

  • Eligibility: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Minimum 50% aggregate in PCB for General category, 40% for OBC/SC/ST
  • Age: 17 years or above at the time of admission. Upper age limit as per NMC norms
  • Selection: NEET UG rank and category determine allocation through TNHSP. Candidates fill college and course preferences during web counselling. Provisional allotment is followed by document verification and admission confirmation at TVMC

TVMC’s NEET UG state quota closing rank for the General category varies annually. The college is a sought-after government option in southern Tamil Nadu.

MD / MS (Postgraduate)

MD and MS admissions are through NEET PG, with seats split between the Tamil Nadu state quota (50%) and All-India Quota (50%). Candidates must hold a TVMC or any NMC-recognised MBBS degree for admission to PG programmes. Specialisation preference is exercised during TNHSP PG counselling, with final allotment based on NEET PG rank and seat availability.

DM / MCh (Superspeciality)

DM and MCh seats are filled through NEET SS, which is the national-level superspeciality entrance examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). DM programmes at TVMC include Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Medical Oncology, Nephrology, Neurology, and Virology. MCh programmes include Neuro Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Surgical Gastroenterology, and Genito Urinary Surgery.

BSc Paramedical and Allied Health Programmes

BSc Paramedical admissions are merit-based on Class 12 PCB marks. Courses include BSc Medical Laboratory Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Critical Care Technology, Accident and Emergency Care Technology, Radio Diagnosis Technology, Anesthesia and Operation Theater Technology, Cardiac Care Technology, Cardiac Perfusion Technology, and Dialysis Technology. These programmes are conducted alongside clinical training at TMCH.

TVMC Placements and Career Outcomes

TVMC does not operate a conventional campus placement process, as is standard for government medical colleges. Career outcomes for MBBS graduates are driven by competitive examinations and government service recruitment.

TVMC Campus and Infrastructure

Tirunelveli Medical College is situated in Palayamkottai, the administrative twin city of Tirunelveli, spread across approximately 286 acres. The college, hospital, and hostels are located within a compact radius, making daily commute minimal for students. The Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TMCH) is the principal referral hospital for the Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts and handles a high volume of complex cases from across southern Tamil Nadu.

A new 8-floor superspeciality block was commissioned in 2019, housing DM and MCh-level care departments including Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, and Surgical Oncology. The campus includes a central library, a lecture theatre complex, and separate hostel facilities for MBBS and PG medical students. The college also has a nursing hostel.

The attached TMCH functions as a teaching hospital across all clinical disciplines. Students are exposed to high patient volumes with a breadth of tropical, surgical, paediatric, and obstetric conditions common to southern Tamil Nadu, giving TVMC graduates a strong clinical foundation before PG or service placement.

TVMC vs Madurai Medical College vs Thoothukudi Government Medical College

Aspirants from southern Tamil Nadu who secure a NEET UG rank sufficient for a government medical college often choose between TVMC, Madurai Medical College (MMC), and Government Medical College, Thoothukudi. All three are state government institutions funded and administered by the Tamil Nadu government, serving a broadly overlapping southern-Tamil Nadu aspirant pool.

Thoothukudi Government Medical College is newer and suited for aspirants specifically from the Thoothukudi belt.
