BIHER B.Tech Lateral AI FAQs
Ques. Is the B.Tech Lateral (Artificial Intelligence) at BIHER a standalone AI programme or a CSE programme with AI specialisation?
Ans. The B.Tech Lateral (Artificial Intelligence) at BIHER is a dedicated AI specialisation programme, not just a CSE programme with an elective. The curriculum is specifically structured around AI, machine learning, deep learning, NLP, and computer vision, giving students a focused technical foundation in AI engineering. This is distinct from the general CSE programme and is designed to align with the growing demand for AI professionals in the industry.
Ques. What is the scope of AI jobs after completing B.Tech Lateral (AI) from BIHER?
Ans. Graduates of the B.Tech Lateral (AI) programme can pursue roles such as Machine Learning Engineer, AI Developer, Data Scientist, Computer Vision Engineer, NLP Engineer, and AI Research Associate. The AI sector in India is growing rapidly, with companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, and numerous startups actively hiring AI graduates. BIHER's placement cell, with 2,300+ recruiting companies, provides a strong platform for AI-focused job placements.
Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech (AI) and B.Tech Lateral (AI) at BIHER in terms of curriculum?
Ans. The B.Tech (AI) is a 4-year programme starting from the 1st year (1st semester), covering foundational engineering subjects in the first two years before specialising in AI. The B.Tech Lateral (AI) is a 3-year programme for Diploma holders who enter directly into the 2nd year (3rd semester), skipping the foundational year. The AI specialisation curriculum in both programmes is largely the same from the 3rd semester onwards, but lateral entry students are expected to have prior technical knowledge from their Diploma.
Ques. Does BIHER offer any industry certifications or tie-ups for the AI programme?
Ans. BIHER has collaborations with IBM for AI-related programmes (B.Tech CSE with AI in association with IBM). While the B.Tech Lateral (AI) programme may not have a specific industry tie-up mentioned, students can access BIHER's broader industry partnerships, lab facilities, and the BRICKS innovation programme. Students are encouraged to pursue additional certifications from platforms like Coursera, edX, or IBM SkillsBuild to supplement their degree.
Ques. Can a Diploma holder in a non-CS branch (e.g., Mechanical or Electrical) apply for B.Tech Lateral (AI) at BIHER?
Ans. As per BIHER's eligibility criteria, any Diploma in Engineering/Technology recognised by the Central or State Government with a minimum of 50% aggregate is eligible for lateral entry. This means Diploma holders from non-CS branches such as Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics can also apply for the B.Tech Lateral (AI) programme. However, students from non-CS backgrounds may need to put in extra effort to bridge the gap in programming and computer science fundamentals.
Ques. What are the hostel and accommodation options for B.Tech Lateral (AI) students at BIHER?
Ans. BIHER has 5 on-campus hostels (4 for boys, 1 for girls) accommodating 1,470 students. Hostel room rent ranges from Rs. 32,500 (Non-AC) to Rs. 65,000 (AC) per year, with an additional mess fee of Rs. 50,000 per year. Hostel is not mandatory for lateral entry students. Off-campus PG accommodations near the Selaiyur campus are available at Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 7,000 per month, offering a more affordable alternative for students who prefer independent living.
