GLSID Integrated M.Des FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between the Integrated M.Des (5 years) and doing B.Des + M.Des separately at GLSID?
Ans. The Integrated M.Des is a 5-year programme that combines the B.Des and M.Des into a single seamless journey, directly leading to a Master's degree. If you pursue B.Des (4 years) and M.Des (2 years) separately, it takes 6 years in total. The Integrated programme saves one year and offers a more cohesive academic experience with sustained studio engagement and peer learning over 5 years. The curriculum integrates foundational B.Des coursework with advanced M.Des-level studio practice and research. The total fee for the Integrated programme is also typically lower than pursuing both degrees separately. It is the preferred option for students who are certain about pursuing design at the postgraduate level.
Ques. Can I exit the Integrated M.Des programme after 4 years with a B.Des degree, or do I have to complete all 5 years?
Ans. Under NEP 2020 guidelines, which GLSID follows, students in integrated programmes typically have multiple exit options. After completing 4 years (8 semesters), students may be eligible to exit with a B.Des degree. After completing all 5 years (10 semesters), they receive the Integrated M.Des (Master of Design) degree. However, the specific exit policy and conditions at GLSID should be confirmed directly with the institute at the time of admission, as the exact implementation of NEP 2020 exit options may vary.
Ques. Which specialisation should I choose in the Integrated M.Des programme at GLSID?
Ans. The Integrated M.Des programme at GLSID offers six specialisations: Apparel Design, Accessories and Jewellery Design, Environment and Space Design, Graphic Design, Digital Film Making, and Product Design. The choice depends on your interests and career goals. Graphic Design and Product Design are popular for their broad career applicability in digital and manufacturing industries. Apparel Design and Accessories Design are strong choices for students interested in the fashion and luxury goods sectors. Environment and Space Design suits those interested in interior and spatial design. Digital Film Making is ideal for students passionate about cinema, OTT content, and media production. The first year is a common Foundation Year, so you have time to explore before finalising your specialisation.
Ques. Is the Integrated M.Des degree from GLSID recognised for teaching positions or further research (PhD)?
Ans. Yes, the Integrated M.Des degree from GLS University is a UGC-recognised postgraduate degree. Holders of an M.Des degree are eligible to apply for teaching positions in design institutes (subject to UGC norms for faculty qualifications) and can pursue a PhD in Design. GLSID itself offers a PhD in Design programme, making it possible to continue your academic journey at the same institution. The M.Des degree also qualifies you for UGC-NET (Design) eligibility, which is required for Assistant Professor positions in universities.
Ques. How does the Integrated M.Des at GLSID compare to standalone M.Des programmes at NID or other institutes?
Ans. The Integrated M.Des at GLSID is a 5-year programme starting after 10+2, while standalone M.Des programmes at NID, IDC IIT Bombay, or other institutes are 2-year postgraduate programmes for graduates. NID and IDC are premier national institutions with highly competitive admissions, strong research output, and elite industry connections. GLSID's Integrated M.Des is a strong regional option in Gujarat, offering a seamless 5-year design education at a lower cost. For students who are certain about pursuing design at the master's level from the outset, the Integrated M.Des at GLSID offers a cost-effective and time-efficient pathway. For the highest-tier design research or academic careers, NID or IDC may carry more prestige.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing the Integrated M.Des from GLSID?
Ans. Graduates of the Integrated M.Des programme from GLSID are equipped for advanced design roles across multiple sectors. Career opportunities include Senior Designer, Design Lead, Creative Director, Design Researcher, Design Educator, Design Consultant, and Entrepreneur, depending on the chosen specialisation. The M.Des qualification also opens doors to teaching positions in design institutes and PhD programmes. Compared to B.Des graduates, M.Des holders typically command higher starting salaries and are considered for more senior roles in design firms, corporate design teams, and academic institutions. The 5-year programme's depth of studio practice and research also makes graduates well-suited for leadership roles in design-driven organisations.
