VMMC Admission Process

All VMMC programmes are purely entrance-exam driven. No management quota or direct admission exists. Counselling is merit-based and conducted at the national level by MCC and at the state level by GGSIPU.

MBBS Admission

MBBS admission at VMMC follows a two-tier counselling structure.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with at least 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST/OBC)
  • Age: Minimum 17 years on or before 31 December of the admission year
  • Entrance exam: Valid NEET UG score
  • AIQ seats (15%): MCC NEET UG counselling at mcc.nic.in
  • Delhi state quota and institutional quota (85%): GGSIPU counselling
  • Selection stages: NEET UG merit rank and category determine counselling eligibility, followed by choice filling, allotment, and document verification

The AIQ closing rank for the General Category in 2025 was 68,655. OBC candidates were admitted up to rank 79,866 and SC candidates up to rank 2,20,525. Delhi state quota cutoffs are significantly more relaxed, with General Category candidates admitted up to rank 1,400 to 2,000 under GGSIPU counselling.

MD / MS (Postgraduate) Admission

PG admission is entirely AIQ-driven through MCC NEET PG counselling. All MD and MS seats at VMMC are covered under the 50% AIQ pool. Candidates must hold a valid NEET PG score and an MBBS degree recognised by NMC. The AIQ General Category closing rank for MD/MS in 2025 was 41,451.

DM / MCh (Super-specialty) Admission

DM and MCh admissions are based on NEET SS score, conducted through MCC counselling. Candidates must hold MD or MS degrees in the relevant discipline as specified by NMC. Seats are limited and highly competitive.

B.Sc (Hons) Nursing Admission

B.Sc Nursing admissions are based on NEET UG score and GGSIPU counselling. Candidates must have completed 10+2 with PCB and cleared NEET UG. The total intake is 50 seats per year.

VMMC Placements and Career Outcomes

VMMC does not conduct formal campus placements in the conventional sense. MBBS and PG graduates pursue diverse career pathways including postgraduate medical education, government service, private hospital employment, and superspecialty training.

Note: The majority of VMMC MBBS graduates appear for NEET PG. A government medical college education at VMMC is widely regarded as preparation for a career in clinical medicine rather than direct corporate employment.
Career Stage / PathwayTypical CompensationNotes
Internship (MBBS)INR 17,000 to 20,000 per month (stipend)Mandatory one-year rotating internship at Safdarjung Hospital
NEET PG to MD/MSINR 70,000 to 90,000 per month (PG stipend)Primary pathway for VMMC MBBS graduates

Government service (post-MBBS)INR 56,100 to 67,700 per month (Level 10 to 11)Central Health Services / state civil medical services

VMMC MBBS graduates have secured positions at leading hospitals and medical institutions including AIIMS, Medanta, Fortis, Apollo, and Max Healthcare. The proximity to Safdarjung Hospital also creates a natural pathway for DNB and DrNB programmes run through NBEMS. The PG programme’s breadth across 21 disciplines ensures graduates enter fellowships and super-specialty training at top institutions nationwide.

VMMC Rankings

VMMC participates in NIRF rankings under the Medical category. Its 2025 rank of 22 places it among the top 25 government medical institutions in the country.

Ranking BodyCategory2025 Rank2024 Rank
NIRFMedical22 (Score: 61.50)17

VMMC’s NIRF score reflects strong performance in research output and graduation outcomes. The five-rank drop from 2024 to 2025 is attributed to intensified competition from other government medical colleges and research-active private institutions.

VMMC Campus and Infrastructure

VMMC is located within the Safdarjung Hospital complex in Ansari Nagar, New Delhi. The campus spans 25 acres and is directly integrated with the hospital, giving students immediate access to wards, operation theatres, ICUs, and diagnostic facilities from the first year itself.

The attached Safdarjung Hospital operates with 1,531 authorised beds across all major specialties. It is one of the busiest tertiary care referral centres in north India and is administered directly by MoHFW. The hospital’s OPD records among the highest daily patient footfall in the country, providing MBBS and PG students with a high-volume, high-diversity clinical environment.

Hostel facilities include two boys’ hostels and one girls’ hostel within the campus. Annual hostel fee is INR 6,000. The campus is equipped with a library, sports complex, canteen, ATM, 24-hour electricity and water supply, and a medical centre for students.

VMMC vs MAMC vs UCMS

Aspirants who qualify for VMMC under NEET UG typically also consider Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) and University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), both central government medical colleges in Delhi under similar fee structures and NEET UG admission criteria.

AIIMS Delhi or VMMC would be the best for MBBS?

AbstractAndroid

It's a big decision, so I suggest making a pros and cons list and considering the future benefits of each college, like internal PG quota and other factors. Remember, it's a commitment for 5 years, so think it through. Best of luck!

What should be the preference order, GMCH Chandigarh, VMMC Delhi, AIIMS other than Delhi, CMC Vellore?

Aditya GuptaMBBS from VMMC Delhi

I chose VMMC Delhi over the other three options (GMCH Chandigarh, AIIMS (other than Delhi) & CMC Vellore) for my MBBS.

According to me, the order of preference should be:

  1. VMMC Delhi
  2. GMCH Chandigarh
  3. AIIMS (other than Delhi)
  4. CMC Vellore

My reasons for this preference order are:

  • VMMC, GMCH, and AIIMS are government colleges with minimal MBBS fees.
  • These three do not have a mandatory bond period
  • VMMC Delhi and GMCH Chandigarh are better than AIIMS (other than Delhi) due to their internal PG reservation system
  • VMMC is a better choice than GMCH because of its location. VMMC is located in Delhi because of which it offers better opportunities. Also, the hospital of VMMC is bigger and VMMC offers more internal PG reservation as compared to GMCH.

Due to these factors, I would suggest you opt for VMMC Delhi for your MBBS course.

Why should one choose VMMC over MAMC?

Shwetha S

VMMC offers 170 seats for the MBBS program whereas MAMC offers a total of 250 seats. While both VMMC and MAMC are very renowned colleges, the first year at VMMC is still quite stress-free whereas MAMC adheres to a strict curriculum.

VMMC offers a top-notch infrastructure with modern equipment and supportive staff. It has one of the largest government hospital complexes in India along with Asia’s largest OPD. On the other hand, MAMC also offers decent infrastructure and facilities on campus for students’ overall well-being.

The primary reason for aspirants to choose VMMC is the Internal PG reservation. Since VMMC is affiliated with IP University, UG students (MBBS) are eligible for an internal PG Quota and can secure MD/MS seats at VMMC.

It is advisable to choose VMMC to avail the benefits of reservation for PG courses. Although, MAMC doesn’t provide any reservations for PG courses. Students graduating from MAMC are equipped with a strong academic foundation and can be highly competitive.

Which college should I opt for between LHMC and VMMC?

Sapna Malik
Darshan SethiLives in Delhi

I am listing below the advantages of each of these colleges-

LHMC-

  1. It is located at Connaught Place.
  2. It offers the prestigious DU tag.
  3. LHMC has better academics than VMMC.
  4. It is an all-girls college, so it is safer for girls.
  5. You’ll get the Delhi State quota for PG seats.

VMMC-

  1. It is located at South Extension, near AIIMS.
  2. It has better infrastructure than LHMC.
  3. The clinical exposure is better due to the greater diversity of cases.
  4. Its co-ed environment will make you more comfortable to work with the opposite gender.
  5. It offers guaranteed internal PG quota in hospitals like RML. An internal PG quota will be of immense help for your higher studies.

Both the colleges are good, and you should choose between them based on your personal preference.

Do people in AIIMS-D, JIPMER, AFMC, MAMC, VMMC, LHMC, and UCMS become egoistic?

Sanjana KapoorLives in New Delhi

Medical students from all these colleges are quite decent. They are normal people studying at reputed institutions. I have good friends in MAMC and LHMC.

It is in fact society that puts an extra burden on these people. They are expected to be social all the time. But this expectation is very unrealistic.

It is not right to put labels on these individuals. Their busy schedule should not be confused with egoistic behavior.

Which is better, GMC Mumbai or VMMC?

Sabeer Chalana
Sanjana KapoorLives in New Delhi

Here are a few parameters to compare GMC Mumbai and VMMC-

  • Location- Both the cities are top-tier, but I would suggest going for Delhi. It offers better PG coaching facilities.
  • Internal Reservation- VMMC offers internal PG reservations, whereas GMC does not.
  • Clinical Exposure and Faculty- VMMC offers much better clinical exposure and faculty.
  • Paraclinical Academics- In this regard, GMC is much better than VMMC.
  • Close to hometown- If you are a North Indian, VMMC will be much more accessible from your hometown.
  • Brand Value- Both the colleges have equal brand value.
  • Hostel facilities and campus culture- In this regard, VMMC is a better choice.

Both GMC Mumbai and VMMC are good institutions. However, VMMC is a better choice according to me.

Which college do you think is better, VMMC or MAMC? Also, I am confused about PGIMS Rohtak since it's my hometown.

Sabeer Chalana
Sanjana KapoorLives in New Delhi

In my opinion, the aforementioned institutes can be ranked in the following manner

MAMC>VMMC>PGIMS

Here are some strong reasons for this order

  • Both MAMC and VMMC are top-ranked colleges with better infrastructure, academics, research opportunities, facilities, and a huge patient load.
  • Delhi offers a better city life than Rohtak and also better opportunities.
  • The college inculcates a sense of responsibility in the students as they have to do all basic chores on their own from washing clothes to fulfilling other document formalities.
  • The MAMC tag and the excellent internal PG quota at VMMC are other major perks of choosing these institutes.
  • Delhi has more medical colleges and you can attend all their fests too. It will be an exhilarating experience.

So choose wisely after weighing the pros and cons of both colleges.

In spite of its lower ranking, why has VMMC been occupied first compared to KGMU?

Raktim Tarafdar
Sanjana KapoorVMCC Delhi

VMMC attracts a major crowd of NEET toppers. It is the most chosen college after MAMC. There are several reasons why many people choose VMMC over KGMU.

Mandatory rural service is the biggest disadvantage of KGMU. Those planning for a PG/superspeciality especially find this service period unnecessary and time-consuming. Moreover, VMMC is located in Delhi. This makes it more favorable. Though I personally feel Lucknow offers almost every facility. Internal PG reservation also works in the favor of VMMC.

KGMU is ranked much higher than VMMC. The education at KGMU is much better too. Despite this, VMMC is preferred because of the above reasons.

How is the internship (after MBBS) at VMMC Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi?

Sabeer Chalana
Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

The internship scenario at VMMC is quite disappointing and tiring. The number of patients is so huge in all the departments and interns have to work more than required to get the work done. Their focus is not to learn new procedures but to complete the work and go. Here is the department-wise scenario

  • Pediatrics : In this department, interns are required to find all the case sheets(files) and reports and arrange them before the rounds begin. They are also responsible for dextrose monitoring and discharges. If you are posted in labor, you will have to ensure the baby’s safety.
  • Surgery : Here, interns are required to do sampling, dressing, and discharges. In emergency minor OT, you will have to I n D, suturing, catheterization, and such. Interns also go to OT to watch the surgeries. Postgraduate students may let you do procedures like hydrocele on minor OT days.
  • Medicine : The patient load varies from season to season. In dengue season, it’s maximum and you will always be busy doing sampling and cannulation.
  • OBC : Here you are responsible for sampling, cannulation, catheterization, and NST. You can also take deliveries in the labor room.
  • Orthopedic : During emergency days you will be busy with cast and traction. You might also have to do skeletal traction.
  • For other departments like PSM, ENT, Derma, Optha, and Casualty, the workload is comparatively less so you get a lot of free time.

Overall, through the internships, you will get confident at least in minor tasks, and gain a lot of hands-on experience.
