The city's name is derived from the Malayalam/Tamil term thiru-anantha-puram, which means "The City of Lord Ananta" and refers to the deity of the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The city was officially known as Trivandrum until 1991 (Trivandrum is the anglicized name of the town), when the government chose to restore the city's original name, Thiruvananthapuram.
