Various studies show the presence of approximately 9,000- 12,000 species in the green algae group. Chlorophyta is aquatic (freshwater and marine), which is a chlorophyll-bearing organism that is capable of photosynthesizing. They play a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem by fixation of at least half of the total carbon dioxide on earth through photosynthesis. Algae are microscopic and macroscopic, which is mostly unicellular as similar to plants. The size of microscopic algae ranges from 0.2 to 2 mm and macroscopic ones can be as large as 60 mts in size. They mostly occur in freshwater and are attached to moist habitats such as wood, soils, stones, and stagnant water. Few of them are also seen with fungi and animals.

Green algae are a group of algae belonging to Chlorophyta that are an association of microorganisms in the kingdom of Protista. Due to the dominance of the chlorophyll pigment a and b localised in their chloroplasts, they are usually grass green.
Chlorophyta have three classes
- Chlorophyceae- The first-class containing the greatest number of organisms. Chlorella and Volvox belong here.
- Charophyceae- This class of organisms have been seen since prehistoric times. Example- Spirogyra.
- Ulvophyceae- The third class are marine organisms. Examples include species of calcium-rich green algae called Halimeda and Ulva.

- Chloroplasts have chlorophyll a and b pigments which convert sunlight to chemical energy. Accessory pigments include beta carotenes and xanthophyll.
- The cell wall is composed of cellulose and pectose (outer layer) where energy is stored in the form of starch.

Green algae bloom refers to a rapid increase in the algal population by the rapid growth of unicellular microscopic algae. Few of them are toxic (as they lower the oxygen level in natural water sources thus killing life forms) while most aren't.
Algal blooms occur mostly due to nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers that cause excessive growth of algae (eutrophication). An example is a kelp forest.
