The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) conducts the HSLC Compartmental Examination for Class X students who fail in one or more subjects in the main High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) annual examination. The NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 is expected to be held in June 2027, approximately six weeks after the main HSLC 2027 result is declared in April 2027 — following the pattern of the 2026 compartment exam, which ran from June 9 to June 20, 2026. Students who fail in up to four subjects in the main HSLC exam are eligible to apply for this supplementary examination through the official NBSE portal at nbsenl.edu.in.

Eligible students apply online through the NBSE portal within the designated application window (expected in May 2027, matching the May 11–16 window used in 2026), pay a fee of ₹600 per subject, and appear for the compartment exam at their allotted centre. NBSE allows up to two chances to clear the compartment examination. Alongside the compartment exam, NBSE also conducts an Improvement Examination for students who have already passed the HSLC but wish to improve marks in one subject — this improvement facility is limited to one attempt only.

Passing the compartment exam earns students the HSLC pass certificate with a “Pass (Compartment)” notation — a fully valid qualification for Class XI admission across Nagaland and the rest of India.

  • Students who fail in up to 4 subjects in the NBSE HSLC 2027 main exam are eligible for the compartment examination.
  • The NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 is expected in June 2027, based on the 2026 pattern (June 9–20, 2026).
  • Applications are expected to open in May 2027 on the NBSE portal (nbsenl.edu.in), with a short window of approximately five to six days.
  • The compartment exam fee is ₹600 per subject for HSLC students (confirmed for 2026; expected to be similar in 2027).
  • NBSE grants up to 2 chances to clear the compartment exam; after both attempts, students must re-register for the full HSLC cycle as a fresh private or regular candidate.
  • Internal assessment marks from the main HSLC 2027 exam are carried forward — only the theory paper is re-evaluated in the compartment exam.
  • A pass in the compartment exam earns a certificate marked “Pass (Compartment)”, which is accepted for Class XI and equivalent admissions across India.

NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 — Overview

The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) was established in 1973 and regulates secondary and higher secondary education across Nagaland. The HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) examination is the Class X board exam, conducted annually in February. NBSE conducts the HSLC Compartmental Examination every year in June, a few weeks after the April result. In 2026, the compartment and improvement examinations were held from June 9 to June 20, 2026, with the application window running from May 11 to 16, 2026, and the main HSLC 2026 result declared on April 24, 2026. For 2027, a similar June schedule is expected — exact dates will be published on the NBSE official portal (nbsenl.edu.in) after the HSLC 2027 main result is announced.

NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam Datesheet 2027

The NBSE has not yet released the compartment exam schedule for 2027, since the main HSLC 2027 examination is expected in February–March 2027 and its result in April 2027. Based on the 2026 cycle — where the compartment and improvement examinations were held from June 9 to June 20, 2026, approximately six weeks after the April 24 result — the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 is expected to be conducted in June 2027. The subject-wise timetable showing exact paper dates within the exam window will be released by NBSE on nbsenl.edu.in after the HSLC 2027 result is declared.

The complete event timeline for the 2027 HSLC cycle — all of which lies in the future as of today (July 30, 2026) — is listed below in chronological order, with 2026 actuals for reference:

NBSE HSLC Compartment Admit Card 2027

The NBSE HSLC Compartment Admit Card 2027 is expected to be released in the first week of June 2027, a few days before the compartment exam begins. The admit card is mandatory — students without a valid admit card will not be permitted to enter the examination hall under any circumstances. Based on the 2026 pattern, admit cards are distributed through schools for regular students and made available on the NBSE portal (nbsenl.edu.in) for private candidates.

  • Regular Students: Admit cards are distributed through the school. Your school’s examination coordinator will collect admit cards from the NBSE district office or download them via the portal and hand them out to eligible students. Verify all details on the admit card immediately and report any discrepancy to your school principal before the exam day.
  • Private Candidates: Private students can download the admit card directly from the NBSE official portal (nbsenl.edu.in) using their registered roll number and credentials. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID along with the admit card on exam day.

The admit card carries your name, roll number, subject(s) to be attempted, allotted exam centre, exam date and time, and instructions for the exam day. Read all instructions carefully before the day of the examination.

Where are NBSE HSLC Compartment Exams held?

The NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 will be conducted at designated examination centres across Nagaland — typically the same venues used for the main HSLC examination — covering all district headquarters including Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Wokha, Zunheboto, Phek, Mon, Longleng, Kiphire, and Peren. Your allotted examination centre is printed on your admit card and is not transferable — plan your travel and arrive at least 30 minutes before the 9:00 AM exam start time.

NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam Syllabus

The syllabus for the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 is identical to the full prescribed syllabus for the NBSE Class X main examination for the 2026–27 academic session. No reduced or abridged syllabus applies to the compartment exam — the theory paper covers the complete Class X syllabus for each subject in which you failed. Students need to prepare only the subject(s) they failed in the HSLC 2027 main exam, but must cover the entire syllabus for those subjects.

Since internal assessment marks are carried forward from the main exam, compartment students can focus their preparation entirely on the theory component. The NBSE Class X syllabus for 2026–27 is NCERT-aligned with state-specific adaptations, particularly in Social Science and language subjects. Subject syllabuses can be downloaded from the NBSE portal (nbsenl.edu.in).

Note: Only the theory component is re-evaluated during the compartment exam. Internal assessment marks (20 marks for most subjects) and practical marks (30 marks for Science) earned during the 2026–27 academic year are automatically carried forward from the main HSLC 2027 result and are not separately evaluated during the compartment examination.

NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam Pattern 2027

The NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 follows the same question paper structure as the main HSLC theory examination. Each theory paper carries 80 marks (70 for Science), lasts 3 hours (9:00 AM to 12:00 PM), and includes a mix of objective-type, short-answer, and long-answer questions. The exam is conducted in offline (pen-and-paper) mode at designated centres across Nagaland. There is no negative marking. Students appear only in the subject(s) they failed in the main HSLC 2027 exam and do not re-attempt subjects they have already passed.

Internal assessment marks (20 marks for most subjects) and practical marks (30 marks for Science) are carried forward automatically — only the theory paper is re-evaluated. This means the compartment examination is focused entirely on the written component of the failed subject(s), giving students a targeted second chance without re-doing the full year’s work. The subject-wise marking breakdown is below:

Subject Theory Marks (Compartment Paper) Internal / Practical Marks (Carried Forward) Total Marks Question Types
English 80 20 (Internal Assessment) 100 MCQs, Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Short & Long Answers, Writing Tasks

Previous Year Question Papers with Solutions PDF

Practising NBSE HSLC previous year question papers is one of the most effective preparation strategies for the compartment exam. Question papers from 2025 and 2026 give you a direct look at the question format, difficulty level, and the balance of objective versus descriptive questions in each subject — helping you plan your preparation and manage the 3-hour exam more effectively. Since the compartment exam uses the same paper pattern as the main HSLC exam, main exam papers from previous years are equally useful for compartment preparation.

NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam Eligibility Criteria 2027

NBSE defines clear eligibility conditions for the HSLC Compartmental Examination. Students who fail in up to four subjects in the NBSE HSLC 2027 main examination are eligible to apply for the compartment exam — this is broader than many other state boards, giving more students a second chance without repeating the full academic year. Students who fail in five or more subjects must re-appear in the full HSLC examination as private or regular students in the next cycle.

Eligibility is automatically determined from the HSLC 2027 main result. Students do not need to separately apply for eligibility determination — only the compartment exam application form submission and fee payment within the short May 2027 window are required. Students must also meet NBSE’s attendance requirements for the 2026–27 academic session; those with attendance shortfalls should contact their school or the NBSE office immediately after the result is declared.

Eligibility Criteria Details Key Insights
Failed Subjects Fail in 1 to 4 subjects in the HSLC 2027 main exam Failing in 5 or more subjects requires re-appearing in the full HSLC cycle as a fresh candidate; no compartment option is available
Student Type Regular students of NBSE-affiliated schools; private candidates as per NBSE annual notification Both regular and private students who sat for HSLC 2027 are covered; verify eligibility from the official NBSE compartment notification
Attendance Must meet NBSE’s minimum attendance requirement for the 2026–27 session Attendance shortfall may require condonation — contact your school or the NBSE office immediately if attendance is below the minimum
Number of Attempts Up to 2 chances to clear the compartment exam First attempt: June 2027; second and final attempt: next compartment session (expected June 2028)
Passing Criteria Minimum 33% in theory and 33% in practicals separately in each subject Must pass in all registered subjects to receive the HSLC pass certificate
Improvement Exam A student who passed HSLC 2027 but wishes to improve marks in one subject may appear for the Improvement Examination (conducted alongside the compartment exam) Improvement exam is limited to 1 chance only and is a separate provision from the Compartmental Examination
Subject Restriction Compartment: appear only in failed subject(s). Improvement: appear in one already-passed subject only A failed subject cannot be cleared via the improvement exam — that requires the compartment exam

What is the rule of the compartment exam in NBSE HSLC?

  • Regular Students: A regular Class X student who fails in up to four subjects in the HSLC 2027 main exam is eligible for the compartment exam. The student applies online through the NBSE portal (nbsenl.edu.in) within the application window (expected May 2027, approximately 5–6 days), pays ₹600 per subject, and appears at the allotted centre in June 2027. Schools typically assist regular students through the application process.
  • Private Candidates: Private students who sat for the HSLC 2027 exam and failed in up to four subjects follow the same online application process via the NBSE portal and apply independently. Centre allotment is based on the student’s registered district.
  • Improvement Candidates: Students who passed the HSLC 2027 exam but want to improve marks in one subject can appear in the Improvement Examination — conducted alongside the compartment exam in June 2027. This is a separate provision, limited to one attempt only, and the higher of the two scores (original or compartment) is recorded on the marksheet.

How many chances are given in NBSE HSLC Compartment?

NBSE provides two chances to clear the compartment examination. The first attempt is the main compartment window in June 2027; if a student fails this, a second and final opportunity is available in the next year’s compartment session (expected June 2028), at which point the student re-applies as a returning compartment candidate through the NBSE portal. After exhausting both chances without clearing the exam, students must re-register for the full HSLC examination as a private or regular candidate in a new cycle. The exact terms for the second attempt will be specified in NBSE’s official compartment notification for 2027.

NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam — Number of Attempts

Attempt Tentative Schedule Notes
First Attempt June 2027 Main compartment window; conducted approximately 6 weeks after the HSLC 2027 result (April 2027); most students clear in this attempt
Second Attempt (Final) June 2028 Next compartment session; student re-applies via NBSE portal; failing this requires re-registration for the full HSLC cycle as a fresh candidate

NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam Fee Structure

Students eligible for the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 must pay the prescribed fee when submitting the application form online. The compartment exam fee for HSLC is ₹600 per subject — students failing in two subjects pay ₹1,200 in total, and students failing in four subjects pay ₹2,400. The fee was confirmed at ₹600 per subject for the 2026 cycle; the 2027 fee is expected to be the same, subject to any revision in the official NBSE notification.

Candidate Category Fee per Subject (Expected 2027) Late Fee (Additional)
Regular Students — HSLC (Class X) ₹600 per subject As notified by NBSE (if a late window is offered)
Private Candidates — HSLC (Class X) ₹600 per subject As notified by NBSE (if a late window is offered)
Improvement Examination — HSLC (Class X) ₹600 (1 subject only) As notified by NBSE

Note: The fee structure above is based on NBSE’s confirmed 2026 compartment exam notification (₹600 per subject for HSLC; ₹650 per subject for HSSLC — Class XII). The 2027 fee will be confirmed in the official NBSE notification published after the HSLC 2027 main result. Always verify the current fee on nbsenl.edu.in before applying.

Application is completed online via the NBSE portal (nbsenl.edu.in). Regular students can coordinate with their school to submit the application and fee; private students must complete the process independently. The application window is extremely short — just six days in 2026 (May 11–16) — so eligible students must act immediately once the window opens. Missing the deadline means waiting for the second compartment attempt in June 2028.

NBSE HSLC Passing Marks Criteria 2027

To pass the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027, students must secure a minimum of 33% marks in each subject, with this threshold applying separately to the theory component and to the practical or internal assessment component. The 33% minimum applies to theory and practicals independently — not just to the aggregate — meaning you must meet the floor in each component on its own, not just in the combined total.

In the compartment exam, only the theory paper score is newly evaluated; the carried-forward internal or practical marks are added to determine the final subject total and grade. A student who secures grade D (combined marks in the 33–40 range) or higher in the subject total is declared passed.

What happens after passing the compartment exam: Students who pass receive a mark sheet with “Pass (Compartment)” noted for the cleared subject(s). This is a complete, valid HSLC pass certificate — accepted for Class XI (Plus Two) admission across Nagaland and at most institutions in India. The compartment exam marks replace the previously failed marks in the final mark sheet and CGPA calculation. If you appeared for the Improvement Examination and your compartment score is lower than your original marks, the higher original score is automatically retained.

What happens after failing the compartment exam: Students who fail the first compartment attempt (June 2027) are eligible for a second attempt in the June 2028 compartment session. Failing both permitted attempts means re-registering for the entire HSLC cycle as a fresh private or regular candidate — no further compartment extensions are available beyond the two attempts.

Subject Theory Marks Internal / Practical Marks Min. Passing (Theory) Min. Passing (Internal / Practical) Total Min. Passing (out of 100)
English 80 20 (Internal) 27 marks (33% of 80) 7 marks (33% of 20) 33
Alt. English / Hindi / MIL 80 20 (Internal) 27 marks (33% of 80) 7 marks (33% of 20) 33
Mathematics 80 20 (Internal) 27 marks (33% of 80) 7 marks (33% of 20) 33
Science 70 30 (Practical) 24 marks (33% of 70) 10 marks (33% of 30) 33
Social Science 80 20 (Internal) 27 marks (33% of 80) 7 marks (33% of 20) 33

Is 27 marks out of 80 a passing mark in the NBSE HSLC theory paper?

Yes — for subjects with an 80-mark theory paper (English, Alternative English/Hindi/MIL, Mathematics, Social Science), 27 marks out of 80 is the minimum passing threshold in theory (33% of 80 = 26.4, rounded to 27). However, relying on exactly the bare minimum in theory while depending on carried-forward internal marks to bridge the gap to 33 out of 100 total is risky. Aim for at least 35–40 marks in the theory paper to pass comfortably regardless of how the rounding and component breakdown are applied.

NBSE HSLC Passing Marks — Quick Reference

Component Total Marks 33% Minimum Rounded Minimum Marks
Theory — English, Alt. English, Maths, Social Science 80 26.4 27 marks
Theory — Science 70 23.1 24 marks
Internal Assessment (most subjects) 20 6.6 7 marks
Practical — Science 30 9.9 10 marks
Total per Subject 100 33.0 33 marks

NBSE HSLC Grading System

NBSE follows a nine-point grading system for HSLC (Class X) results, assigning grades based on the combined marks (theory + internal assessment or practical) in each subject. Grade D (marks range 33–40, Grade Point 4.0) is the minimum passing grade — students securing grade D or above in every subject are declared passed; grades E1 and E2 indicate failure and eligibility for the compartment exam. In compartment exam results, the grade assigned reflects the combined total of the newly evaluated theory marks and the carried-forward internal or practical marks.

Grade Marks Range Grade Point Performance Level
A1 91 – 100 10.0 Outstanding
A2 81 – 90 9.0 Excellent
B1 71 – 80 8.0 Very Good
B2 61 – 70 7.0 Good
C1 51 – 60 6.0 Above Average
C2 41 – 50 5.0 Average
D 33 – 40 4.0 Pass (Minimum) / Needs Improvement
E1 21 – 32 — (Fail) Fail — Compartment / Improvement Eligible
E2 00 – 20 — (Fail) Fail — Compartment / Improvement Eligible

Note: NBSE’s official grading bands for 2027 will be confirmed in the HSLC 2027 examination marking scheme. Students scoring grade D (33–40) are officially considered as having passed the subject but may be categorised by NBSE as “needs improvement.” Students in grades E1 and E2 have failed the subject and are eligible for the compartment or improvement examination (subject to the four-subject eligibility limit for compartment). The CGPA is calculated only after all subjects show a passing grade (D or above).

NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam FAQs

Ques. Who is eligible for the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027?

Ans. Students who appear in the NBSE HSLC 2027 main examination and fail in up to four subjects are eligible for the compartment exam. NBSE’s eligibility is broader than many state boards — students failing in 1, 2, 3, or 4 subjects can appear. Students failing in five or more subjects are not eligible and must repeat the full HSLC cycle as fresh candidates. Eligibility is determined automatically from the main HSLC result.

Ques. When will the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 be held?

Ans. The NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 is expected to be held in June 2027. In 2026, the compartment and improvement examinations ran from June 9 to June 20, 2026 — approximately six weeks after the April 24 result. The 2027 schedule is expected to follow the same pattern. Exact dates will be published on nbsenl.edu.in after the HSLC 2027 main result is declared in April 2027.

Ques. What is the fee for the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027?

Ans. The compartment exam fee for HSLC is ₹600 per subject, based on the confirmed 2026 fee structure. Students failing in one subject pay ₹600; those failing in four subjects pay ₹2,400 in total. The 2027 fee is expected to be similar and will be confirmed in the official NBSE notification. Payment is made online through the NBSE portal (nbsenl.edu.in) during the short application window in May 2027.

Ques. How do I apply for the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027?

Ans. Applications must be submitted online through the NBSE portal at nbsenl.edu.in within the notified window (expected in May 2027 for approximately 5–6 days). Regular students can apply with their school’s assistance; private students apply independently. You need your HSLC 2027 roll number, registration details, and ₹600 fee per subject. Do not miss the window — the 2026 window was just six days, and NBSE does not routinely accept late applications.

Ques. How many attempts are given in the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam?

Ans. NBSE provides two chances to clear the compartment examination. The first attempt is in June of the result year (June 2027 for the 2027 cycle); the second and final attempt is in the next year’s compartment session (expected June 2028). If both attempts are exhausted without passing, the student must re-register for the full HSLC examination as a private or regular candidate in a new cycle.

Ques. What is the syllabus for the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027?

Ans. The syllabus for the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam 2027 is identical to the full NBSE Class X syllabus for the 2026–27 academic session — no reduction is made for compartment students. Since you appear only in the subject(s) you failed, prepare the entire theory syllabus for those specific subjects. Syllabus PDFs are available for download on the official NBSE website (nbsenl.edu.in).

Ques. What happens if I fail the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam?

Ans. If you fail the first NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam attempt (June 2027), you are eligible for a second attempt in the next compartment session (expected June 2028). Failing both permitted attempts means re-registering as a private or regular student and appearing in the full HSLC examination in a new cycle. NBSE does not permit any further compartment attempts beyond the two allowed chances.

Ques. Will my internal assessment and practical marks be carried forward to the compartment exam?

Ans. Yes. Internal assessment marks (20 marks for most subjects) and practical marks (30 marks for Science) from the 2026–27 academic year are automatically carried forward to the compartment exam. You do not need to redo internal assessments or practicals. Only the theory paper is re-evaluated during the compartment examination — so your preparation effort can focus entirely on the theory syllabus of the failed subject(s).

Ques. Is the NBSE HSLC Compartment mark sheet valid for Class XI admission?

Ans. Yes. A mark sheet showing “Pass (Compartment)” from the NBSE HSLC examination is a fully valid Class X pass certificate. It is accepted for Class XI (Plus Two) admission across Nagaland and at most schools and institutions across India. The compartment marks replace the previously failed marks in the final HSLC mark sheet and CGPA. Some highly selective institutions may apply their own criteria, so verify with your target school before applying.

Ques. What is the difference between the NBSE HSLC Compartment Exam and Improvement Exam?

Ans. The NBSE HSLC Compartment Examination is for students who failed in one or more subjects (up to four) in the main HSLC exam. The Improvement Examination is for students who already passed the HSLC but want to improve their marks in one subject only. Both exams are conducted together in June (per the 2026 schedule) using the same application window and portal. Compartment students get two attempts; improvement students get one. A failed subject cannot be cleared via the improvement exam — only the compartment exam applies to failed subjects.
