Class 7 Science Chapter 1 Nutrition of Plants: Important Topics

Plant nutrition is the study of the chemical elements and compounds necessary for plant growth, plant metabolism, and their external supply. In its absence the plant is unable to complete a normal life cycle, or that the element is part of some essential plant constituent or metabolite.

  • Mode of Nutrition in Plants

Nutrition is the process of obtaining food, utilizing it to grow, stay healthy and repair any damaged body part. Plants produce their food by making use of raw materials from their surroundings, such as minerals, carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight. There are two modes of nutrition:

  • Autotrophic – Plants show autotrophic nutrition, which is called primary producers. Plants make their food by using light, carbon dioxide, and water.
  • Heterotrophic – Both animals and human beings depend on plants for their food and are therefore called heterotrophs.
  • Photosynthesis

Plants are able to synthesize their own food through a process known as photosynthesis. The chloroplast is the site of photosynthesis. Initially, the food production is carried out in leaves. Water and minerals from the soil are absorbed by the root which is then transported to the leaves through vessels. Carbon dioxide reaches leaves through stomata, which are small pores on leaves surrounded by guard cells.

  • Saprotrophs

Saprotroph, also called saprophyte or saprobe, is an organism that feeds on the nonliving organic matter known as detritus at a microscopic level. The saprophytic plants derive nutrition from dead and decaying plants and animals, and they dissolve the dead and decaying matter by secreting digestive juices and absorbing the nutrients.

  • How Nutrients are replenished in the soil

Nutrients can be replenished in the following ways: Fertilisers and manures contain plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, etc. So, the soil gets enriched with nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, etc when fertilizers and manures are added to the soil in the fields.
