Example From Chapter 9 Algebraic Expressions and Identities

Ques. Calculate area of a triangle whose base and the altitude are (3x – 4y) and (6x + 5y) respectively. 

Soln: Given,

Base = (3x – 4y)

Altitude = (6x + 5y)

Area of triangle = ½ ×base × altitude

= ½ × (3x – 4y) * (6x + 5y)

=½ ×[3x (6x + 5y) – 4y (6x + 5y)]

= ½ ×18x2 + 15xy – 24xy – 20y2]

= ½ × [18x2– 9xy – 20y] square units

= 9x– (9/2) xy – 10y2] square units
