Class 8 Chapter 8 Science Cell – Structure and Functions: Important Topics

Cells are the fundamental unit of life. If we were to break apart an organism to the cellular level, the smallest independent component that we would find would be the cell.

  • Cell Membrane

The cell membrane, also known as the plasma membrane, present in all cells, is defined as a biological membrane that separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment protecting the cell from its environment. It consists of a lipid bilayer that is semipermeable, and it regulates the transport of materials entering and exiting the cell.

  • Cytoplasm

The cytoplasm is defined as a thick solution that fills each cell and is enclosed by the cell membrane. It is basically composed of water, salts, and proteins. In eukaryotic cells, the cytoplasm includes all of the material inside the cell and outside of the nucleus.

  • Nucleus

A nucleus is defined as the membrane-enclosed organelle within a cell that contains the chromosomes. An array of holes, or pores, in the nuclear membrane, allows for the selective passage of certain molecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids, into and out of the nucleus.
