    The Technische University Ilmenau, also known as TU Ilmenau is a german public university located in Ilmenau, Thuringia, Germany. It was established in 1894 as a private educational facility named Thuringian Technical Center. In the winter semester of 2019, the university had a total enrolment of 5425 students. Amongst them, 30% of the students were international students.

    TU Ilmenau opens applications for summer and winter sessions. All the bachelor, diploma, and master programs are offered in the winter session. However, some master programs are offered in the summer semester as well.

    TU Ilmenau international student admission

    TU welcomes applications from all over the world. International students can apply online through the university’s application portal.

    International students have to demonstrate their German language proficiency as almost every program is taught in the German language. However, some of the master programs are also taught in the English language. For such programs, applicants have to submit proof of English language proficiency.

    German language proficiency Requirements

    TU Ilmenau accepts the following scores as proof of knowledge of German language proficiency. Test score requirements are the same for both bachelor’s and master’s programs.

    TU also offers an academic preparation course (APC) for students who do not have enough knowledge of the German language. The course is an intensive German course, starting at B1 level in the CEFR and usually takes one or two semesters (a maximum of 4).

    The university asks for proof of English language proficiency because some of the master’s programs are taught in English.

    Visa process for international students

    • After receiving the acceptance letter from the university, applicants can apply for a German student visa at the German Embassy or Consulate in their home country.
    • Applicants must submit other documents related to Immigration status.
    • Proof of financial support for about EUR 740 per month must be presented along with the Visa Application.
    • Students have to demonstrate their German and English language proficiency.

    • Proof of health insurance
    • After reviewing the documents, the local “Ausländerbehörde” (Foreigners’ Office) will convert the visa into a residence permit. Applicants for a long stay must renew the permit at regular intervals.

    TU Ilmenau Undergraduate admissions

    For undergraduate admissions at TU Ilmenau, international applicants must submit their secondary school certificate in either German or English translation and proof of German language proficiency.

    • Applicants must evaluate their certificates on the database „anabin“ (only in German), which is a service offered by the Kultusministerkonferenz of the Federal Republic of Germany.
    • Students can access this database and check whether their secondary school- certificate enables them to study in Germany.

    Note: If the secondary school certificate is not equivalent to the German Abitur, then students will get admission to the preparatory college Staatliches Studienkolleg in Nordhausen, where they will spend one year preparing for study in Ilmenau.

    TU Ilmenau Graduate admissions

    For admission to master’s programs, students must possess a BSc or BA degree in a similar field with at least 180 credits on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Students must also demonstrate their German and English language proficiency. The university will then inspect the application documents and will conduct individual interviews.

    International applicants are recommended to submit their application at least 3 months prior to the application period. TU Ilmenau offers all the programs in german language. However, some of the master programs are also taught in the English language. There are no tuition fees at Ilmenau TU.
