FOM University of Applied Sciences is Germany’s largest state-recognised private university, with its headquarters in Essen and additional campuses in Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich. Established in 1993 and accredited by the Ministry of Science and Research of North Rhine-Westphalia, the institution enrols over 45,000 students each year. As per the StudyCheck 2025 Category Award, FOM ranks among Germany’s top three universities with student populations above 15,000.

The university runs six English-taught degrees for international students. Bachelor’s tracks cover International Business Management, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering. Master’s tracks include Big Data & Business Analytics, Engineering & Management and two MBA specialisations. Indian applicants targeting German multinationals frequently pick FOM’s applied learning model over research-focused universities in Germany.

  • StudyCheck 2025 Category Award: Top 3 among German universities with 15,000+ students
  • Estimated acceptance rate: around 50% (estimated figure)
  • Intakes: Winter (October start) and Summer (April start)
  • Master’s tuition: €23,850 total programme fee (₹26.05 Lakh)
  • Student body: 45,000 across four campuses in Germany

FOM does not appear in QS World University Rankings 2027 or Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. These tables typically favour research-intensive universities. FOM’s positioning within Germany’s private-university tier has grown consistently. Handelsblatt continues to name FOM among the best private campus-based universities in the country.

Tuition applies uniformly across all four campuses at €11,925 per year for master’s programmes (₹13.02 Lakh). There is no application fee. Indian applicants add a €500 deposit (₹54,615) and blocked-account proof for the German student visa. FOM’s format suits candidates who want an applied-learning route into MBA programmes in Germany rather than the traditional research doctorate track.

FOM University of Applied Sciences Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Requirements are consistent across the English-taught portfolio at FOM University of Applied Sciences, with test thresholds set at CEFR B2 for language and standard equivalence rules for academics.

PG Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. Indian 3-year bachelor’s (60%+) or 4-year bachelor’s is accepted.
  • English proficiency: IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72 (0 to 120 legacy scale), Duolingo 105 or Medium of Instruction waiver.
  • APS India certificate mandatory, with certified transcripts uploaded to the application portal.
  • MBA specialisations require at least one year of relevant post-bachelor work experience.

UG Requirements

  • Class 12 completion recognised as German Hochschulzugangsberechtigung equivalent (Indian 50%+ in academic stream).
  • English proficiency at CEFR B2 (IELTS 5.5); the 8-week Preparation Course at €2,750 (₹3.00 Lakh) is available for applicants below this level.
  • APS India certificate mandatory for the visa; submit alongside the FOM application to avoid delays.

Key insight: The Medium of Instruction waiver is genuinely available at FOM University of Applied Sciences for Indian applicants whose entire bachelor’s or Class 12 education was delivered in English. Get the MOI certificate on official letterhead with the principal’s signature; embassy officers sometimes ask for this even after FOM accepts it.

FOM University of Applied Sciences Acceptance Rate 2027

FOM University of Applied Sciences does not publish an official acceptance rate for its international admissions cycle. Third-party estimates suggest the rate sits around 50% (estimated figure), which reflects a moderately selective admissions posture.

Selectivity varies by programme. The M.Sc. Big Data & Business Analytics and MBA International Management tracks draw the highest Indian applicant volumes and therefore experience tighter shortlisting during peak months. Bachelor’s programmes remain more accessible given the CEFR B2 language route and Preparation Course fallback.

Reality check: The 50% figure is a market estimate, not an official FOM disclosure. A well-prepared Indian applicant with a 60%+ bachelor’s and clean IELTS 5.5 has a strong shot at admission. FOM values academic fit and clear career intent over aggressive test-score competition.

FOM University of Applied Sciences Campus, Facilities and Student Life

FOM University of Applied Sciences operates across four principal campuses: Essen (headquarters), Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich. Essen serves as the administrative hub while Munich hosts most of the Automotive and AI-oriented tracks.

  • Location and transport: All four campuses sit within walking distance of central rail stations and integrate with local U-Bahn or S-Bahn transit.
  • Housing: FOM does not maintain on-campus dormitories. The International Office assists Indian students with private and shared housing referrals.
  • Facilities: Modern lecture theatres, digital libraries with 24-hour access, career counselling desks and language learning labs feature at every campus.
  • Indian community: Indian students form one of the larger international cohorts, particularly at Essen and Berlin, with active peer networks and mentoring circles.

What Indian students say: The applied-learning classroom model and small-group project style get consistent praise. Indian students note that Essen’s cost profile makes it easier to hold part-time work without stress. Career support quality varies by campus, with Munich receiving the strongest reviews.

FOM University of Applied Sciences Scholarships 2027

FOM University of Applied Sciences does not operate a dedicated institutional scholarship pool for international students. Indian applicants typically fund their studies through personal savings, education loans from Indian banks, and external funding schemes such as DAAD grants or the Deutschlandstipendium where participating.

Applicants should check the official FOM scholarship page for the latest position on any partner or externally administered awards. Indian bank education loans covering tuition plus living costs remain the most common route.

Planning note: Start loan sanction paperwork with Indian banks like SBI, HDFC Credila or Avanse at least three months before the FOM University of Applied Sciences deadline. German consulates want the loan sanction letter alongside the blocked account proof at the visa interview.

FOM University of Applied Sciences Rankings 2027

FOM University of Applied Sciences does not appear in the major global rankings, which favour research-intensive traditional universities. National recognition inside Germany remains strong, particularly in the private-university and business-focused categories.

Ranking Body202720262025
QS World University RankingsNot rankedNot rankedNot ranked
Times Higher Education WorldNot rankedNot rankedNot ranked
US News Best Global UniversitiesNot rankedNot rankedNot ranked

[Source: QS, THE, US News editions]

National recognitions carry weight in the German recruiter market. As per the StudyCheck 2025 Category Award, FOM ranks among the top three universities in Germany with student populations above 15,000. Handelsblatt lists FOM as the best private campus-based university in the country. The German Institute for Service Quality awarded FOM the Best Business-Focused University title in 2023. FIBAA has issued the Excellence in Digital Education seal in the Premium category.

Key insight: For Indian applicants, the absence of a QS or THE rank at FOM University of Applied Sciences matters less than one might expect. German student visas do not require QS listing, and local employers weigh state recognition plus applied learning credentials more than global tables.

FOM University of Applied Sciences Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

FOM University of Applied Sciences does not publish a formal placement rate or median salary report for its international graduate cohort. Career outcomes are supported through campus career centres, alumni mentoring circles and industry partnerships across the four campus cities.

  • Employment-within-6-months rate: not disclosed for international students.
  • Median starting salary: not disclosed by the university; German market medians for M.Sc. and MBA graduates vary widely by sector and prior experience.
  • Top recruiters: FOM does not publish an official recruiter list. Career support routes graduates towards German multinationals, consulting firms and technology companies present at Essen, Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich.
  • Career support: dedicated counselling, CV workshops, industry meet-ups and internship listings run through the International Office.

Insider note: Indian graduates from FOM University of Applied Sciences MBA and M.Sc. tracks who secure roles in Germany typically leverage the 18-month post-study job-search visa extensively. Networking through FOM’s evening classes, which mix full-time international students with local working professionals, delivers referral opportunities that standard research universities cannot match.

FOM University of Applied Sciences vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers other private and public Universities of Applied Sciences in Germany that Indian applicants commonly evaluate alongside FOM, including Fulda University of Applied Sciences and Hof University of Applied Sciences.

FOM stands apart from public peers on scale (45,000 students) and multi-campus reach. It stands apart from private online-heavy peers such as IU by anchoring its international students to physical German campuses with in-person cohort learning.

FOM University of Applied Sciences fits Indian students whose profile combines an accepted bachelor’s degree, a target of an English-taught management or applied-technology master’s, and a total investment appetite around €18,750 to €23,850 (₹20.48 Lakh to ₹26.05 Lakh). Its multi-campus footprint and applied learning model deliver strong routing into consulting, analytics and engineering positions across Germany. Career payoff hinges on securing employment during the 18-month post-study visa window.

Indian-specific advantages are meaningful. FOM’s uniform state recognition eases the German student visa route, its Essen headquarters keeps living costs manageable during the study phase, and its industry-integrated classroom model exposes students to local recruiter networks well before graduation.

FOM is not the right fit for candidates seeking research doctorates, Nobel-tier academic prestige, or top-100 QS ranking clout for employer signalling back in India. Applicants whose primary goal is a research-focused academic career should evaluate Technical University of Munich or Heidelberg University instead, both of which anchor Germany’s global rankings visibility.

FOM University of Applied Sciences FAQs

Ques. Does FOM University of Applied Sciences offer bachelor’s programmes entirely in English?

Ans. Yes. FOM University of Applied Sciences runs three bachelor’s degrees taught fully in English at its Essen campus: International Business Management (B.Sc.), Computer Science & Digital Technologies (B.Sc.), and Mechanical Engineering & Digital Technologies (B.Eng.). Each spans six semesters and 180 ECTS. Indian applicants who lack CEFR B2 English can enrol in the 8-week Preparation Course before starting the main bachelor programme.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at FOM?

Ans. Yes. German student visa rules permit international students to work 140 full days or 280 half days per calendar year alongside their studies. Indian students at FOM can supplement their living costs through campus jobs, working-student contracts with local employers, or paid internships. Working hours must not disrupt attendance obligations. The International Office helps route Indian students to relevant part-time opportunities across the four campus cities.

Ques. Is the IELTS requirement waived for FOM University of Applied Sciences applicants?

Ans. Yes, under specific conditions. FOM University of Applied Sciences accepts a Medium of Instruction waiver for Indian applicants whose prior bachelor’s or Class 12 education was delivered entirely in English. Applicants must submit an official MOI certificate from their previous institution alongside academic transcripts. Waivers are decided case-by-case by the international admissions office, and unclear cases are asked to submit IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 72.

Ques. How much is the application fee at FOM University of Applied Sciences?

Ans. FOM University of Applied Sciences charges no application fee for international bachelor’s, master’s, or MBA applications. Indian applicants only pay a €500 (₹54,615) enrolment deposit once they receive an offer letter and accept a seat at the university. The deposit adjusts against first-semester tuition. Applicants route documents to incomings@fom.de or the online application portal after registering their personal and educational details.

Ques. What blocked account amount do Indian students need for FOM?

Ans. Indian applicants applying for a German student visa must open a blocked account (Sperrkonto) and deposit approximately €11,904 (around ₹13 Lakh) covering one year of living costs, per current Federal Foreign Office guidelines. The amount releases monthly at roughly €992. Indian students at FOM typically open blocked accounts through providers such as Fintiba or Expatrio before their visa appointment. Verify the current threshold with the German embassy in Delhi.

Ques. Does FOM University of Applied Sciences offer a preparation course for bachelor’s applicants?

Ans. Yes. FOM University of Applied Sciences runs an 8-week Preparation Course for Bachelor programmes priced at €2,750 (₹3.00 Lakh). The course helps Indian applicants strengthen English language readiness at CEFR B2 target, academic writing skills, and quantitative fundamentals before joining a full bachelor’s cohort. It suits students whose Class 12 English medium was inconsistent or whose IELTS falls short of 5.5. Completion is recognised as sufficient English proof for FOM undergraduate admission.

Ques. How long does FOM take to decide on international applications?

Ans. FOM University of Applied Sciences acknowledges application receipt within 24 hours by email. The full admissions decision typically lands within 2 to 4 weeks after all required documents are submitted, including certified transcripts, APS India certificate, and English proof. Indian applicants targeting the Summer 2027 intake should submit complete files by mid-November 2026 to leave buffer time for German visa processing, which itself takes 4 to 8 weeks at the consulates.

Ques. Can dependents accompany Indian students to FOM University of Applied Sciences?

Ans. Yes, but only after the primary student secures the residence permit in Germany. Spouses and minor children of Indian students at FOM may apply for family reunification visas. These require proof of marriage, sufficient funds covering the family, and adequate accommodation in the campus city. Approval timelines run 3 to 6 months at German missions in India. Working rights for accompanying spouses follow standard German dependent visa provisions.

Overview

I talked to one of my seniors before getting into it. But, once I saw the course curriculum and what they were offering, it was worth it with the fee and all.

In my university, there is a library but, it's not very big. You will find previous research papers and all. There are some conferences and all. There are industrial visits. Because my university is an applied university. So, there are a lot of people from the industry, so there is a lot of interaction with them. My university is for the working people. So, talking about the co-curricular activities, when I came here in the beginning there was a marathon.
