Technical University of Darmstadt admissions open two intakes each year, with Winter as the primary window. Bachelor’s applicants need Class XII plus a Studienkolleg year or one completed year at an Indian university. Master’s applicants need a related Bachelor’s with 180 ECTS and IELTS 7.0.

  • Winter 2026/27 primary intake closes 31 August 2026 for standard-cutoff master’s programmes.
  • Zero tuition as a public university, semester contribution €382.68 (INR 42,673). No application fee.
  • PG needs related Bachelor’s and IELTS 7.0. UG needs Class XII plus Studienkolleg year.
  • Acceptance rate estimated 20 to 30 percent, with Computer Science and IT Security tighter.

Indian applicants gravitate toward MS Computer Science, MS IT Security, and MS Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, drawn by zero tuition and Darmstadt’s engineering pedigree. Read the Technical University of Darmstadt profile for campus and ranking context.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use €1 = INR 111.51, the live rate on 20 August 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.
Status: Closing Soon. The Winter 2026/27 primary intake (October start) is still open for master’s programmes with the standard 31 August 2026 cut-off, but competitive English-taught masters such as MS Computer Science and MS IT Security closed on 15 July 2026. Applications for Winter 2027/28 open on the TUCaN portal from 1 June 2027, closing 15 July 2027 for early-cutoff programmes. TU Darmstadt charges no application fee.

Technical University of Darmstadt Application Deadlines

TU Darmstadt runs two intakes each year, with Winter (October start) as the primary intake where the widest range of programmes admits, per the official TU Darmstadt application deadlines page. Master’s applications close in one of two windows depending on the programme, with competitive English-taught masters using an earlier 15 July cut-off and other programmes running to 31 August. Summer intake opens for a limited course set, so most Indian applicants target Winter.

Indian applicants must also secure an APS certificate from the German embassy in New Delhi before applying, and the APS review itself takes several weeks. Processing time from a completed application to an admission decision runs 6 to 8 weeks, so mailing paper documents right at the deadline risks a late-arrival rejection.

TU Darmstadt Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at Technical University of Darmstadt separates by degree level and by language of instruction. Indian Class XII alone does not grant direct Bachelor’s entry to any German university, so Bachelor’s applicants must complete one bridging step, while Master’s applicants need a subject-matched Bachelor’s of the right length. Every Indian applicant, at both levels, needs an APS certificate.

Bachelor’s eligibility (two pathways for Indian applicants):

  • Pathway A: Class XII (CBSE, ICSE, or a State Board) at around 60 to 65 percent plus one completed year at a recognised Indian university with subjects that match the target Bachelor’s.
  • Pathway B: Class XII plus a full year at a German Studienkolleg, ending with the Feststellungsprüfung foundation exam.
  • APS certificate mandatory in both pathways, issued by the German embassy Academic Evaluation Center in New Delhi.

Master’s eligibility: a related Bachelor’s degree worth at least 180 ECTS credits. A 4-year Indian BTech or BE qualifies without bridging, while a 3-year Indian BSc typically needs additional coursework or is admitted only case-by-case. Some programmes list named prerequisite ECTS blocks (for example, MS Computer Science asks for specific credits in theoretical computer science, software engineering, and mathematics).

English proficiency (English-taught master’s):

TestMinimum scoreNotes
IELTS Academic7.0 overallInstitution-wide floor. MS Mechanics accepts IELTS 5.5 as an exception.
TOEFL iBT95Also accepted: TOEFL Paper 550, TOEFL CBT 213, TOEFL iTP 627.
PTE Academic76Accepted as CEFR C1 evidence.
Cambridge CAEPassCertificate in Advanced English accepted.

German proficiency (German-taught programmes): DSH-2, TestDaF with TDN 4 in each section, Goethe C1 or C2, or UNIcert III. Studienkolleg entry itself asks for German at Goethe B1+ or TestDaF TDN 12+.

TU Darmstadt does not publish an English-language waiver based on Medium of Instruction for Indian applicants. Class XII completed in an English-medium school is not accepted in place of IELTS or TOEFL for master’s admission, per the university’s English requirements page. Book a test early rather than plan around a waiver.

Reality check: Indian 3-year BSc holders often assume they can direct-apply for a 2-year MS. TU Darmstadt asks for a 4-year, 180-ECTS Bachelor’s, so BSc applicants usually need to complete a bridging year or an Indian PG diploma before applying.

Technical University of Darmstadt PG Programs

Master’s programmes at TU Darmstadt divide into English-taught engineering and computer science masters (the Indian favourites) and German-taught masters that need DSH-2 or an equivalent German certificate. Base tuition is €0 (INR 0) across every master’s programme as TU Darmstadt is a public Hesse university, with only a semester contribution of €382.68 (INR 42,673). See the full MS programme list for the current course-wise fees breakdown by faculty.

Insider note: MS Computer Science at TU Darmstadt is one of the most sought-after CS masters in Germany for Indian applicants and typically fills its Winter cohort well before the deadline. Prepare your APS certificate and IELTS 7.0 score by February of the intake year so you can apply on 1 June when TUCaN opens.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Technical University of Darmstadt page for your chosen program before applying.

Technical University of Darmstadt UG Programs and Language Requirements

Bachelor’s programmes at Technical University of Darmstadt are almost entirely German-taught, so Indian applicants need a DSH-2 or TestDaF certificate on top of the standard Class XII plus Studienkolleg or bridging-year pathway. Tuition is €0 (INR 0), with the same €382.68 (INR 42,673) semester contribution as at master’s level.

ProgrammeDurationMinimum EligibilityEnglish Req. Min.
BS Computer Science (Informatik)3 yearsClass XII around 60% plus one Indian university year in a CS-adjacent stream, or Studienkolleg T-courseNot required (German-taught, DSH-2 required)
BS Mechanical Engineering (Maschinenbau)3 yearsClass XII with Physics and Maths plus bridging year or Studienkolleg T-courseNot required (German-taught, DSH-2 required)
BS Electrical Engineering and Information Technology3 yearsClass XII with Physics and Maths plus one Indian university year or Studienkolleg T-courseNot required (German-taught, DSH-2 required)
BS Mathematics3 yearsClass XII with strong Mathematics plus bridging year or Studienkolleg T-courseNot required (German-taught, DSH-2 required)
BS Civil Engineering (Bauingenieurwesen)3 yearsClass XII with Physics and Maths plus bridging year or Studienkolleg T-courseNot required (German-taught, DSH-2 required)

Studienkolleg is the standard entry route for Indian Class XII holders and takes about one academic year. TU Darmstadt itself does not run a Studienkolleg, so applicants sit the aufnahme (entry) test at a partner Studienkolleg elsewhere in Hesse (typically Darmstadt or Frankfurt).

Technical University of Darmstadt PhD Pathway

Technical University of Darmstadt admits PhD candidates through direct contact with a supervising professor rather than a central admissions office. There is no fixed deadline, and applications are considered on a rolling basis whenever a research group has funded capacity. An MS from TU Darmstadt or an equivalent 2-year master’s with a strong research profile is the baseline expectation.

  • Step 1: Identify a professor whose research aligns with your master’s thesis or publications.
  • Step 2: Email a CV, transcripts, publication list, and a 2 to 3 page research proposal.
  • Step 3: If accepted, funding is secured through a research contract (typically 65 percent E13 pay-scale, around €2,500 to €3,000 net per month, or INR 2.79 to 3.35 Lakhs) or a scholarship such as DAAD.
  • Step 4: Enrol formally at the faculty and pay the same €382.68 (INR 42,673) semester contribution.

APS certificate is not required for doctoral applicants, unlike Bachelor’s and Master’s. English is the working language in most research groups.

TU Darmstadt Application Process

The TU Darmstadt application runs through TUCaN, the university’s own online portal, and does not route through uni-assist. This is a key difference from many other German universities and simplifies the workflow for Indian applicants.

  1. Secure your APS certificate from the German embassy in New Delhi. Budget €250 (around INR 27,878) for the APS fee and 8 to 12 weeks of processing.
  2. Register on the TUCaN portal once online applications open (1 June for Winter, 1 December for Summer). No application fee is charged.
  3. Complete the online form and upload scanned copies of your certificates, transcripts, APS, and language scores.
  4. Print the Antrag auf Zulassung (Cover Sheet) generated by TUCaN. This sheet is mandatory.
  5. Mail paper documents — the printed Cover Sheet plus certified translations of transcripts and certificates — to TU Darmstadt so they arrive before the deadline. Notarisation of Indian documents is not required.
  6. Monitor TUCaN for the admission decision (6 to 8 weeks after receipt).
  7. Accept your offer and enrol by paying the €382.68 (INR 42,673) semester contribution before the enrolment deadline in the offer letter.

Planning note: The APS review is the slowest step for Indian applicants. Book your embassy appointment as soon as your final semester grades are out, because a missing APS blocks your entire TUCaN submission regardless of everything else being ready.

Documents Required for TU Darmstadt Admissions

The Technical University of Darmstadt documents list combines originals from India with certified German or English translations. Every academic document needs both the original-language scan and a certified translation into German or English.

  • Passport — bio-page copy.
  • APS certificate issued by the German embassy Academic Evaluation Center, New Delhi.
  • Class X and Class XII certificates plus mark sheets, original language.
  • Certified German or English translations of Class X, Class XII, and university transcripts.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and all semester mark sheets (for PG applicants).
  • English proficiency certificate — IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 95, PTE 76, or CAE for English-taught masters.
  • German proficiency certificate — DSH-2, TestDaF TDN 4x4, Goethe C1, or UNIcert III for German-taught programmes.
  • Curriculum Vitae in German or English (Europass format preferred).
  • Letter of Motivation (some programmes only, per department page).
  • Antrag auf Zulassung (Cover Sheet) printed from TUCaN and signed.

Send all paper documents to the International Admission office at the Karo 5 building. Notarisation of Indian documents is not required, but translations must be certified by a sworn translator.

Technical University of Darmstadt Acceptance Rate

TU Darmstadt does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Based on programme-level admission patterns and competitive-intake cohort data, the institution-wide acceptance rate is estimated at 20 to 30 percent for international master’s applicants. Popular English-taught masters, especially MS Computer Science and MS IT Security, sit at the lower end of that band.

The reasons a TU Darmstadt master’s application gets rejected are consistent across cohorts and worth knowing before you apply. A missing APS certificate is the single largest cause of application rejection at the document-check stage. Prerequisite ECTS shortfalls are the second most common — for example, an Indian 3-year BSc applying to MS Computer Science almost always falls short of the 180 ECTS floor. Third, IELTS below 7.0 is a hard reject with no waiver route (aside from MS Mechanics at 5.5).

TU Darmstadt sits at QS 250 globally for 2027, ranks 14th in Germany, and holds top-100 subject positions for Computer Science and Engineering per the TU Darmstadt ranking bands. Programmes at this rank in Germany typically admit around one in four qualified applicants at master’s level.

Germany Student Visa for TU Darmstadt Applicants

Indian students admitted to Technical University of Darmstadt apply for the Germany National Visa (Type D) for study purposes at the German embassy in New Delhi or a consulate in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata. The visa is valid for entry and covers the initial three to six months, after which you convert it into a residence permit at the Darmstadt Ausländerbehörde.

Book your VFS Germany appointment as soon as you receive the TU Darmstadt admission letter, since Delhi and Mumbai slot availability is often 6 to 10 weeks out during peak season (June to August). Submit the admission letter, passport, biometric photos, health insurance proof, motivation letter, and financial proof. The financial proof most Indian applicants use is a blocked bank account (Sperrkonto) with the current statutory sum of €11,904 (around INR 13.27 Lakhs) for one year of study, or an equivalent scholarship award letter. Visa fee is €75 (INR 8,363). Processing typically takes 6 to 12 weeks.

2026 update: The German blocked-account minimum is reviewed annually and was raised again in 2026 to €11,904. Confirm the current sum on the German embassy India website before opening your Sperrkonto with a provider such as Fintiba or Expatrio.

Tips and Checklist for Technical University of Darmstadt

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Technical University of Darmstadt and reflect what typically decides an admission outcome. Use them as a timeline anchor, not a substitute for the programme page.

  • Start APS 6 to 9 months early: The APS certificate takes 8 to 12 weeks and blocks your TUCaN submission until it arrives.
  • Sit IELTS or TOEFL by February: Aim for IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.0 so you can retake once if needed before the 1 June TUCaN opening.
  • Count your ECTS before applying: A 4-year Indian BTech is 240 ECTS-equivalent; a 3-year BSc is 180 at best and often falls short on named prerequisites.
  • Apply on day one: Submit on 1 June when TUCaN opens rather than mid-July. Early submissions get faster APS re-verification.
  • Send paper documents by DHL Express: Regular India Post can take 3 to 4 weeks; TU Darmstadt does not accept email submissions in place of the printed Cover Sheet.
  • Book the VFS visa slot the day your offer arrives: Peak-season Delhi and Mumbai slots book out 8 to 10 weeks in advance.
  • Open the Sperrkonto with Fintiba or Expatrio: Both process the €11,904 (INR 13.27 Lakhs) blocked account within 3 to 5 business days for Indian applicants.
  • Draft a programme-specific SOP: Where a course asks for a motivation letter, name the research groups and professors whose work matches your interest — MS Computer Science and MS IT Security both weigh this heavily.

Technical University of Darmstadt rewards early, well-organised Indian applicants: zero tuition, a direct TUCaN portal without uni-assist, and one of Germany’s top engineering brands for the price of a €382.68 (INR 42,673) semester fee. Missing the APS or an IELTS band is the usual cause of a rejection, so front-load those two steps and the rest of the process is procedural.

Technical University of Darmstadt Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. Does TU Darmstadt charge tuition fees for Indian students?

Ans. No. TU Darmstadt is a public university in Hesse and charges €0 (INR 0) tuition for all students, including non-EU applicants from India. The only mandatory payment is the semester contribution of €382.68 (INR 42,673), which covers administrative services and the semester transport ticket.

Ques. Is an APS certificate mandatory for TU Darmstadt applications from India?

Ans. Yes. Every Indian applicant to a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at TU Darmstadt must submit an APS certificate issued by the German embassy Academic Evaluation Center in New Delhi. Doctoral applicants are exempt. Start the APS process 6 to 9 months before your target intake.

Ques. Can I apply to TU Darmstadt with a 3-year Indian Bachelor’s degree?

Ans. A 3-year BSc is generally short of the 180 ECTS floor for TU Darmstadt master’s programmes. You usually need a bridging year or an Indian PG diploma before you qualify. A 4-year BTech or BE is directly eligible provided the subjects match.

Ques. What IELTS score does TU Darmstadt require for master’s programmes?

Ans. TU Darmstadt asks for IELTS 7.0 overall for English-taught master’s programmes, with TOEFL iBT 95, PTE 76, or Cambridge CAE as alternatives. MS Mechanics is the exception at IELTS 5.5. There is no Medium of Instruction waiver for Indian applicants.

Ques. Does TU Darmstadt use uni-assist or a direct portal?

Ans. TU Darmstadt uses its own TUCaN portal directly. Applications do not route through uni-assist, which means no uni-assist fee is charged. You upload documents online and mail the printed Cover Sheet plus certified translations to the International Admission office.

Ques. What is the application deadline for Winter 2026/27 at TU Darmstadt?

Ans. Winter 2026/27 master’s programmes with the standard cut-off close on 31 August 2026. Competitive English-taught masters such as MS Computer Science, MS IT Security, and MS AI/ML closed on 15 July 2026. Winter 2027/28 applications open on TUCaN from 1 June 2027.

Ques. Is there an application fee at Technical University of Darmstadt?

Ans. No, TU Darmstadt charges no application fee, either for the TUCaN portal or as a separate document-processing fee. Budget separately for the APS certificate (around €250, INR 27,878) and the Germany student visa fee (€75, INR 8,363).

Ques. What is the acceptance rate at TU Darmstadt for Indian students?

Ans. TU Darmstadt does not publish an official acceptance rate. Institution-wide, admission for international master’s applicants is estimated at 20 to 30 percent. MS Computer Science and MS IT Security sit at the lower end of that band and are among the more competitive CS masters in Germany.

Ques. Can I do a Bachelor’s at TU Darmstadt in English?

Ans. No. Bachelor’s programmes at TU Darmstadt are almost entirely German-taught and require DSH-2, TestDaF TDN 4x4, Goethe C1, or UNIcert III. Indian applicants seeking an English-taught programme should target the master’s level, where multiple engineering and CS masters teach in English.

Ques. How long does it take TU Darmstadt to issue an admission decision?

Ans. TU Darmstadt states that master’s application processing takes 6 to 8 weeks from receipt of the complete file. Bachelor’s decisions typically arrive by early August for Winter intake. Track status on TUCaN and factor this timeline into your visa appointment booking.

Ques. Do I need a Studienkolleg for a Bachelor’s at TU Darmstadt?

Ans. Class XII alone does not grant direct entry to TU Darmstadt Bachelor’s programmes. Indian applicants either complete one academic year at a recognised Indian university with matching subjects, or attend a Studienkolleg foundation year and pass the Feststellungsprüfung. TU Darmstadt does not run its own Studienkolleg, so you sit the entry test at a partner Studienkolleg in Hesse.

Ques. What financial proof does the German student visa need for TU Darmstadt?

Ans. The current statutory blocked-account minimum for one year of study is €11,904 (around INR 13.27 Lakhs) as of 2026. You can also submit a scholarship award letter or a formal declaration of support from a German-resident sponsor as an alternative to the Sperrkonto.

Scholarship

  • I did not receive any scholarships. There are different types of scholarship that will be provided by outsiders. College doesn't provide any scholarships. One of my friends received the Deutschland stipendium, which is 300 euros per month. It will be provided for up to 2 years. Mostly, this was given based on the scores in Btech, and this is the only scholarship that Indians can get.
