Technical University of Darmstadt fees for Indian students are among the lowest of any top 250 global university, because both bachelors and masters programmes charge zero tuition, and the only mandatory fee is a semester contribution of EUR 382.68 (INR 42,007). MS Computer Science, MS IT Security, and MS Electrical Engineering and Information Technology remain the top three programmes Indian applicants choose at Technical University of Darmstadt.

The Winter 2026 intake closed on 15 July 2026, so your realistic entry is now the Winter 2027 intake starting October 2027, with a limited Summer 2027 (April) intake available for a small set of programmes. Winter 2027 international applications close on 15 July 2027, giving you a genuine planning cycle rather than a scramble.

  • Bachelors tuition: EUR 0 (INR 0) per year, semester contribution applies
  • Masters tuition: EUR 0 (INR 0) per year, semester contribution applies
  • Semester contribution: EUR 382.68 (INR 42,007) per semester, covers Deutschlandticket transport pass
  • Late payment surcharge: EUR 412.68 (INR 45,300) per semester if paid after due date
  • Application processing fee via uni-assist: EUR 75 (INR 8,233) for the first application

A two-year masters at Technical University of Darmstadt costs approximately INR 29-32 Lakhs total, including semester fees, living expenses, mandatory public health insurance, and the visa-required blocked account. That is a fraction of what an equivalent UK or US masters demands for the same academic tier.

Exchange rate used throughout: 1 EUR = INR 109.77 (xe.com, 29 July 2026 IST).

Winter 2027 Intake: A Planning Cycle for Indian Applicants

Intake: Winter 2026 (October 2026) has closed. Realistic entry is now Winter 2027 (October 2027, deadline 15 July 2027) with a limited Summer 2027 (April 2027, deadline 15 January 2027) intake for select programmes. The 3-6 week national visa processing window makes any earlier start impossible.

Fee update: Zero tuition applies to both intakes. The 2026/27 semester contribution of EUR 382.68 (INR 42,007) is the working figure; the 2027/28 rate is confirmed each June and typically moves within a 2-4% range.

When to pay: No advance deposit is due at admission. The semester contribution is paid only at online enrolment, after your admission letter and visa are in hand, and its deadline is set by the Studierendenwerk each cycle.

Scholarships: DAAD study scholarship applications for the Winter 2027 intake open August 2026 and typically close between 30 September and 30 November 2026, depending on the subject. Deutschlandstipendium applications open once you are enrolled. Inlaks 2027 applications close 12 March 2027.

Technical University of Darmstadt Tuition Fees by Programme for Indian Students

Technical University of Darmstadt charges no tuition to Indian, EU, or any international student, because the state of Hesse has kept public higher education free since 2008 and has not reintroduced fees for non-EU students. Every enrolled student, regardless of programme or nationality, pays only the semester contribution of EUR 382.68 (INR 42,007), which bundles the student services fee, Deutschlandticket national transport pass, and student union levy.

Undergraduate Fees at Technical University of Darmstadt: Winter 2027 Intake

Undergraduate degrees are almost entirely taught in German, so the practical option for Indian bachelors applicants is BS Computer Science, which admits a small international cohort each Winter with a TestDaF or DSH-2 German proficiency requirement. The fee below applies to every UG programme without exception.

Postgraduate Fees at Technical University of Darmstadt: Winter 2027 Intake

Postgraduate is where Indian applications concentrate, because Technical University of Darmstadt runs several masters in English and the total programme cost stays under INR 3 Crore in cash outflow, roughly one-fifth of a comparable US STEM masters. MS Computer Science is the most competitive PG programme for Indian applicants and only opens for Winter intake.

Source: Technical University of Darmstadt programme catalogue, tu-darmstadt.de/studieren/studienangebot, fetched 29 July 2026. Uni-assist processing fee of EUR 75 (INR 8,233) applies to the first application and EUR 30 (INR 3,293) to each additional.

Note: The semester contribution is fixed by the Studierendenwerk, not the university, so it does not vary by faculty or nationality. Do not confuse it with tuition, and do not fall for third-party sites quoting EUR 10,000+ per year, that figure applies to Baden-Wuerttemberg universities, not Hesse.

Technical University of Darmstadt Fee Trend by Year

Tuition at Technical University of Darmstadt has been zero for every year since Hesse abolished study fees in 2008, and it has stayed zero every academic year since. The only figure that changes year to year is the semester contribution, and that movement is small and slow.

Academic YearTuition (EUR)Semester Contribution (EUR)Semester Contribution (INR)YoY Change

Source: Technical University of Darmstadt Studierendenwerk historical fee archive, tu-darmstadt.de/studieren/beitraege_und_gebuehren, fetched 29 July 2026.

The two large step-ups in 2024 and 2025 were driven entirely by the addition of the Deutschlandticket, the national public transport pass now bundled into the semester contribution. Absent further transport price shocks, the 2027/28 fee for the Winter 2027 intake should sit within the EUR 382-395 range.

Key Insight: Even if the Winter 2027 semester contribution rises 4% to EUR 397.98 (INR 43,691), your full two-year masters at Technical University of Darmstadt will still cost roughly INR 1.75 Lakhs in mandatory university fees end to end. Zero-tuition status is not scheduled to change for the Winter 2027 or Winter 2028 intake, because Hesse has no active legislative proposal to reintroduce fees.

Cost of Living in Darmstadt for Indian Students at Technical University of Darmstadt

Darmstadt is a mid-sized science city of 160,000 people, roughly 30 minutes from Frankfurt by regional train, and its cost of living sits well below Munich, Frankfurt, or Berlin. The Studierendenwerk Darmstadt estimates monthly student expenses at EUR 900-1,000 (INR 98,793 to INR 1,09,770) for a modest but comfortable standard.

The single largest saving lever is housing. If you accept a Studierendenwerk dorm room, your rent drops to EUR 280-340 per month, which pulls your total living cost below EUR 800 (INR 87,816). Dorm applications should go in the moment your admission is confirmed, because the waitlist runs 4-8 months for the Winter intake.

Note: Public health insurance is a hard visa requirement, not optional. Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) and AOK Hessen both offer a student rate of roughly EUR 130 (INR 14,270) per month under age 30, and enrolment must be complete before your residence permit interview.

Darmstadt’s Deutschlandticket coverage is genuinely national, so weekend trips to Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Cologne, and even Munich cost nothing beyond your semester contribution. Factor a modest EUR 30-50 (INR 3,293 to INR 5,489) monthly leisure buffer for these trips.

Currency Tip: Load your blocked account for the Winter 2027 intake through Expatrio or Fintiba between January and March 2027, when EUR/INR seasonal movement historically favours the buyer. Use a forex card such as Niyo or IDFC FIRST Bank for your first-month landing expenses, it saves 2-3% versus a raw SWIFT transfer.

Total Cost of Studying at Technical University of Darmstadt for Indian Students

Total first-year cost for an Indian masters student at Technical University of Darmstadt lands at approximately INR 14.5-16 Lakhs of actual spending, plus INR 13.07 Lakhs held in a blocked account that returns to you as monthly withdrawals during the year.

Sources: Technical University of Darmstadt Studierendenwerk fee page; German Federal Foreign Office visa fee schedule, auswaertiges-amt.de; blocked account minimum notified by the Federal Foreign Office for 2026 at EUR 11,904, all fetched 29 July 2026.

Across a full two-year masters, your consumed cost sits at roughly INR 29-32 Lakhs, because year-two spending drops slightly once you locate a longer-term WG and rely less on setup expenses. Compared with a UK MSc at INR 45-60 Lakhs or a US MS at INR 80 Lakhs to INR 1.2 Crore, this is the most financially efficient masters route for an Indian engineering candidate outside a domestic option.

If you are financing the total INR 30 Lakh outlay through an unsecured education loan at 10.5%, the 10-year EMI works out to approximately INR 40,500 per month. A first job at Deutsche Bahn, SAP, Continental, or a Frankfurt fintech commonly pays a starting gross salary of EUR 55,000-65,000 (INR 60.37 to 71.35 Lakhs) per year, so the EMI clears well inside the first year of post-study employment on the German 18-month job-search visa.

Key Insight: Choose a Studierendenwerk dorm plus a HanseMerkur or TK insurance package for the Winter 2027 intake, and your effective monthly cost drops below EUR 800 (INR 87,816). Over two years, that single choice saves you approximately INR 3.5 Lakhs versus a private-flat setup, more than any external scholarship except Inlaks would deliver.

Technical University of Darmstadt Scholarships for Indian Students

Because tuition is already zero, scholarship money at Technical University of Darmstadt goes directly to living costs, and even a small monthly award materially reduces your blocked-account requirement. The two most useful German-side awards for Indian applicants are the DAAD Study Scholarship and the Deutschlandstipendium.

DAAD alone reduces your blocked-account requirement to zero because it exceeds the EUR 992 monthly floor, and JN Tata plus KC Mahindra together can add another INR 20-22 Lakhs on top.

Technical University of Darmstadt Tuition Deposit and Payment Options

Technical University of Darmstadt does not require a tuition deposit, because there is no tuition to secure. The only university payment you make is the semester contribution of EUR 382.68 (INR 42,007) at the time of online enrolment, and only after your admission letter is issued and your visa is approved.

Uni-assist, the central application portal used for most international admissions, charges its own processing fee: EUR 75 (INR 8,233) for the first application and EUR 30 (INR 3,293) for each additional programme in the same intake cycle. This fee is non-refundable and separate from any university payment.

Methods of Payment at Technical University of Darmstadt

  • SEPA bank transfer from your German account: the standard route once your blocked account converts into a regular current account after landing
  • International wire transfer (SWIFT): workable but adds EUR 15-30 (INR 1,647 to INR 3,293) in bank charges each time
  • Uni-assist portal card payment: for the application processing fee, credit and debit cards accepted
  • Forex card (Niyo, IDFC FIRST, HDFC ISIC, or ICICI Sapphiro): optimal for the semester contribution if you have not yet opened a German account, avoids the 2-3% SWIFT premium
  • Education loan disbursement: Indian lenders including SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI, and Axis will disburse directly to a nominated German account

Steps to Pay the Semester Contribution as an International Student

  1. Accept your Technical University of Darmstadt offer via the TUCaN portal within the deadline stated on your admission letter
  2. Open your blocked account (Sperrkonto) with Expatrio, Fintiba, or Coracle and deposit EUR 11,904 (INR 13.07 Lakhs) before your visa interview
  3. Attend your D-visa appointment at the German consulate in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata; visa processing typically takes 3-6 weeks
  4. On arrival in Darmstadt, register at Buergerbuero within 14 days and open a regular German bank account (N26, DKB, Sparkasse, or Deutsche Bank)
  5. Complete online enrolment via TUCaN and transfer the semester contribution to the Studierendenwerk account provided; retain the payment confirmation as your enrolment receipt

Source: Technical University of Darmstadt International Student Services, tu-darmstadt.de/international, and Studierendenwerk Darmstadt beitraege_und_gebuehren page, fetched 29 July 2026.

Note: The semester contribution deadline for the Winter 2027 intake is set by the Studierendenwerk annually and typically falls in mid-August 2027. A late payment triggers the surcharge rate of EUR 412.68 (INR 45,300), so schedule your SEPA transfer 5-7 working days before the stated cut-off.

Hidden Costs of Studying at Technical University of Darmstadt for Indian Students

The visible fees at Technical University of Darmstadt are small, but the visa and setup layer around them adds close to INR 15 Lakhs of upfront cash that catches most first-time applicants off guard. Budget these for the Winter 2027 intake before you commit to a February 2027 loan sanction.

  • Blocked account (Sperrkonto): EUR 11,904 (INR 13.07 Lakhs), mandatory visa requirement, returned to you at EUR 992 per month after arrival, but must sit in the German account before your visa interview
  • German national D visa fee: EUR 75 (INR 8,233) per applicant, paid at appointment
  • APS certificate for Indian applicants: EUR 25 to 30 (INR 2,744 to 3,293), mandatory academic pre-verification introduced from November 2022 for Indian degree holders
  • Health insurance travel gap: EUR 30-50 (INR 3,293 to 5,489) for a private travel policy covering the days between landing and public insurance activation
  • Anmeldung and residence permit fee: EUR 100-110 (INR 10,977 to 12,075) at the Auslaenderbehoerde after arrival
  • Deposit for private WG or dorm: EUR 800-1,500 (INR 87,816 to INR 1.65 Lakhs), typically two to three months of rent, refunded at move-out
  • One-way flight, Delhi or Mumbai to Frankfurt: INR 45,000 to 75,000, book early September for Winter intake to lock in below-INR 55,000
  • Initial setup, bedding, cookware, winter clothing: INR 40,000 to 60,000, first-month landing spend
  • IELTS or TOEFL retake if score short: INR 17,000 per attempt, add TestDaF at INR 21,000 for German-taught programmes
  • Notarised and apostilled document set: INR 8,000 to 12,000 across degree, transcripts, birth certificate, medical certificate

Total hidden and setup cash requirement lands between INR 15.5 Lakhs and INR 17 Lakhs, of which INR 13.07 Lakhs (the blocked account) is technically refundable to yourself over the year.

Note: The APS certificate (Akademische Pruefstelle) is a mandatory pre-check for Indian applicants introduced in November 2022 and now firmly in force. Without it, uni-assist will not process your application. Apply through the APS India website 3-4 months before your target uni-assist deadline, because processing takes 4-8 weeks.

Fee Saving Strategies for Indian Students at Technical University of Darmstadt

The single largest saving lever for the Winter 2027 intake is the DAAD Study Scholarship, because it eliminates the blocked account requirement outright, replacing EUR 11,904 (INR 13.07 Lakhs) of upfront cash with a monthly stipend. Apply by 30 November 2026 at the latest.

  • Take a Studierendenwerk dorm room over private WG: saves approximately INR 1.5-2 Lakhs per year versus private housing, but applications close 6+ months before the intake
  • Work up to 20 hours per week as a working student: German law allows international students to earn EUR 12.82 per hour (2026 minimum), so a HiWi role at a chair or IT firm brings in EUR 800-1,000 (INR 87,816 to INR 1,09,770) monthly, more than covering rent
  • Claim Section 80E tax deduction on your Indian education loan: full interest deduction is available for up to 8 years of loan repayment against your parents’ or your Indian income
  • Use a Fintiba or Expatrio blocked account instead of Deutsche Bank: saves EUR 100-150 (INR 10,977 to 16,466) in one-time setup fees
  • Post-study work: apply for the 18-month German job-search visa after graduation: extending directly into the EU Blue Card once you clear the EUR 45,300 (INR 49.73 Lakhs) minimum annual gross salary threshold for shortage occupations, which covers most Technical University of Darmstadt STEM graduates
  • Skip uni-assist for direct-application programmes: a handful of Technical University of Darmstadt masters accept direct application through the university portal, sparing you the EUR 75 (INR 8,233) processing fee

Tip for Indian Students: For the Winter 2027 intake, chase two things in parallel: a DAAD application by November 2026 and a Studierendenwerk Darmstadt dorm application the day your admission letter arrives. If both land, you cut roughly INR 15 Lakhs from your two-year outlay, which is more than any single external scholarship except Inlaks would deliver.

Is Technical University of Darmstadt Worth the Cost for Indian Students

Yes, decisively. A two-year masters at Technical University of Darmstadt costs approximately INR 30 Lakhs of consumed cash and delivers a QS World Rank of 250 (2027), a THE World Rank in the 251-300 band, and top-100 THE subject standing in Computer Science (75). No other university at that ranking tier costs an Indian student anywhere near this little.

Post-study outcomes are strong. Technical University of Darmstadt is a member of the TU9 alliance, the German equivalent of the Russell Group, and its graduates place regularly at SAP, Deutsche Bahn, Continental, Bosch, Merck, Frankfurt fintech firms, and the neighbouring Frankfurt Financial Services cluster. Starting graduate salaries for MS Computer Science and MS IT Security lands typically at EUR 55,000-70,000 (INR 60.37 to 76.84 Lakhs) per year gross.

Compared with Indian peers, Technical University of Darmstadt outranks every non-IIT engineering institution in India on QS, and sits below only IIT Bombay (QS 134) and IIT Delhi (QS 118) among Indian STEM options. On engineering globally it ranks in the top 160 (QS Engineering and Technology 2026), and fifth in Germany.

If you fund the full INR 30 Lakh cost through an education loan at 10.5% over 10 years, your EMI sits at approximately INR 40,500 per month. Against a first-year gross salary of EUR 55,000 (INR 60.37 Lakhs), that EMI absorbs less than 10% of gross income even in the first year of the German 18-month job-search visa. Payback horizon is realistic at 4-5 years of steady employment.

Technical University of Darmstadt also ranks Joint #1 globally on THE Impact 2025 for SDG9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), which signals both research strength in engineering and a graduate profile Frankfurt employers actively hire from. The city’s proximity to the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) and Deutsche Telekom’s headquarters gives internship and thesis-project access that few peer universities can match.

Key Insight: For the Winter 2027 intake, the practical value equation is this: pay approximately INR 30 Lakhs in cash for a top 250 QS masters, earn INR 60+ Lakhs per year within 18 months of graduation, and clear your loan in under 5 years. No comparable ROI exists in the UK, US, Canada, or Australia at this ranking tier.

Check Technical University of Darmstadt Rankings in Detail →

For the Winter 2027 intake, budget approximately INR 30 Lakhs across two years for a Technical University of Darmstadt masters, INR 15 Lakhs of it upfront in blocked account and setup, and INR 15 Lakhs consumed across living and mandatory fees. A DAAD application by 30 November 2026 or a Studierendenwerk dorm allocation reduces your effective outlay by INR 12-15 Lakhs, and an Indian education loan at 10.5% clears at roughly INR 40,500 per month over 10 years, comfortably serviceable on a first-year German engineering salary. The single-highest-priority action for a Winter 2027 target: complete your APS certificate before December 2026 so it does not delay your uni-assist submission the following spring.

The 2026 minimum wage of EUR 12.82 per hour translates to EUR 800-1,000 (INR 87,816 to INR 1,09,770) monthly at a HiWi (student assistant) role or working-student position at nearby employers such as SAP, Deutsche Bahn, or Frankfurt fintech firms.

Ques. What is the application fee for Technical University of Darmstadt via uni-assist?

Ans. Uni-assist charges EUR 75 (INR 8,233) for the first application and EUR 30 (INR 3,293) for each additional programme in the same intake cycle. The fee is non-refundable and separate from any university payment. Some Technical University of Darmstadt masters accept direct application through the university portal, sparing you this fee.

Ques. Does Hesse plan to introduce tuition fees for international students at Technical University of Darmstadt?

Ans. No, the state of Hesse has no active legislative proposal to reintroduce tuition fees, and Technical University of Darmstadt has remained tuition-free since 2008. Only Baden-Wuerttemberg among German states currently charges non-EU students (EUR 1,500 per semester at universities like the University of Stuttgart or the University of Freiburg). Hesse’s political position on this has remained stable across multiple state governments.

Ques. What is the APS certificate and do Indian students need it for Technical University of Darmstadt?

Ans. Yes, the APS certificate (Akademische Pruefstelle) is a mandatory pre-verification of Indian academic credentials, introduced from November 2022 and firmly in force for every Indian applicant to any German university. Costs approximately EUR 25-30 (INR 2,744 to 3,293), takes 4-8 weeks to process, and must be attached to your uni-assist application. Apply through the APS India website 3-4 months before your target deadline.

Ques. What is the EMI on an education loan for Technical University of Darmstadt?

Ans. An unsecured education loan of INR 30 Lakhs at 10.5% over 10 years works out to an EMI of approximately INR 40,500 per month. Against a typical first-year graduate salary of EUR 55,000-70,000 (INR 60.37 to 76.84 Lakhs) at German employers such as SAP, Deutsche Bahn, or Continental, that EMI absorbs less than 10% of gross income and clears within 4-5 years of steady employment.

  • The difficulty level will be higher only because it will be both theoretical and practical.
  • Positive aspects can include advanced topics and negative can sometimes be difficult to understand as they don't teach from the basics since we are already Masters . If we don't have basic knowledge, it would be so tough to follow.
  • In a day maximum 2 classes are scheduled and timings will be from 10 to 12 PM and 2PM to 5.30 PM
  • The average number of students per class depends on the subject you chose. But on AVG, we can expect at least 50-70 students attending class.
  • In my course, almost 15+ people enrolled.

Fees

  • Fee breakdown depends on how many semesters you take to finish the course. But minimum is 4 semesters and maximum can be till 12 semesters. Fees charged semester-wise. Per sem, they charge around 340 euros. which includes only the tuition fee. and doesn't include a hostel or accommodation. So it depends how many semesters you take and how many 348 euros you pay for every semester.
  • Basic Expenses Per Month: These are common for everyone.
  • Rent would be around-420 420 min
  • Health insurance, which is mandatory, -145euro
  • Radio Bill mandatory-10 euro
  • Mobile recharge: 15 euros
  • Food-min :100
  • bank account maintenance bill: 6 euros per month.
  • Other activities depends on you for study materials-50

  • Finding an accommodation is the most difficult situation in Germany due to a lack of housing for students. Also, it is quite impossible for students to stay as a sublet tenant for a longer duration since one needs to register themselves at the municipality to notify the authorities of their stay. This is a crucial step in order to proceed with opening your bank account, receiving your health card insurance or even getting a SIM card with a contract.
  • Easier ways to find accommodations are through WhatsApp groups or the best way is to find them through platforms such as WG gesucht and immoscout 24,.
