Most Bachelor’s programmes at the university are German-taught, so English-track Indian applicants typically enter through one of the roughly 50 English-taught Master’s programmes.
A 2-year MS Artificial Intelligence at €4,000 per semester adds up to INR 17.44 Lakhs in tuition and roughly INR 25.38 Lakhs in living costs, so a total budget of INR 42-45 Lakhs, well below the INR 60-90 Lakh range for a comparable UK or US Master’s. A 3-year Bachelor’s at the €2,000 per semester mid-band totals INR 13.08 Lakhs in tuition.

University of Erlangen-Nuremberg charges tuition to newly enrolled non-EU students from the Summer 2027 intake, with fees tied to the programme category rather than a flat rate. Bachelor’s fees sit at €1,000-3,000 (INR 1.09-3.27 Lakhs) per semester and Master’s fees at €2,000-6,000 (INR 2.18-6.54 Lakhs) per semester, on top of the €82 (INR 8,937) semester contribution every student pays.
Bachelor’s fees at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg cluster in three bands, humanities and general sciences at the lowest tier and engineering or medicine-adjacent programmes at the top. Most Bachelor’s programmes are taught in German, so English-only Indian applicants are a small minority at UG level.

Note: Indian applicants who already hold a Bachelor’s degree from a German university are exempt from Master’s tuition under the new rules. If you started your UG in India, this exemption does not apply and you pay the full Master’s tuition from Summer 2027.
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg was tuition-free for all students (Indian included) from the abolition of Bavarian tuition in 2013 until the Winter 2026/27 intake. Summer 2027 marks the first fee-paying intake for new non-EU students, so there is no gradual year-on-year percentage to project, the change is a one-time step from €0 to the €2,000-6,000 per semester range.
| Academic Period | Master’s Tuition (New Non-EU) | Semester Contribution | What Changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter 2024/25 | €0 | €76 | Tuition-free era |
| Winter 2025/26 | €0 | €82 | Contribution edged up |
| Winter 2026/27 | €0 | €82 | Last tuition-free intake |
| Summer 2027 | €2,000-6,000 (INR 2.18-6.54 Lakhs) | €82 | Fee introduced for new non-EU |
| Winter 2027/28 | €2,000-6,000 (INR 2.18-6.54 Lakhs) | €82 | Full fee-paying cycle |

Key Insight: The Summer 2027 intake is the first at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg where new Indian students pay tuition; MS Artificial Intelligence costs INR 4.36 Lakhs per semester versus INR 8,937 for cohorts that enrolled by Winter 2026/27. Once you enrol in Summer 2027 the fee is fixed at that year’s structure for the duration of your degree, so waiting for the Winter 2027/28 intake does not lower it.
Erlangen is a mid-sized Bavarian town of about 115,000 people, cheaper than Munich or Frankfurt but not as budget-friendly as Leipzig or Dresden. FAU’s own study-cost estimate puts a student’s monthly outgoings at €970 (INR 1.06 Lakhs), so an annual living budget of €11,640 (INR 12.69 Lakhs) for a 12-month year is realistic for a single Master’s student.
| Expense | Monthly (EUR) | Monthly (INR) | Annual (INR) | Notes for Indian Students |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rent (with utilities) | €410 | INR 44,686 | INR 5.36 Lakhs | Studierendenwerk halls are cheapest at €250-350 per month, private WG shared flats €400-500 |
| Food and groceries | €198 | INR 21,580 | INR 2.59 Lakhs | Aldi, Lidl, and Rewe cover weekly groceries; mensa lunches cost €3-5 |
| Health insurance and medical | €100 | INR 10,899 | INR 1.31 Lakhs | Public insurance (TK, AOK) is mandatory below age 30; €120-135 in practice for 2026-27 |
| Public transport and mobility | €89 | INR 9,700 | INR 1.16 Lakhs | Deutschland-Ticket at €58 covers all local and regional trains nationwide |
| Leisure and culture | €65 | INR 7,084 | INR 85,010 | Student rates at cinemas, gyms, and the university sports programme reduce this materially |
| Clothing | €46 | INR 5,013 | INR 60,159 | Budget €300-500 upfront for winter jacket, boots, and thermal layers |
| Study materials | €31 | INR 3,379 | INR 40,545 | Library covers most textbooks; a laptop upgrade is a separate one-time cost |
| Telecommunications | €31 | INR 3,379 | INR 40,545 | Prepaid SIM plans from Aldi Talk or Congstar start at €10 per month |
| Total | €970 | INR 1,05,720 | INR 12.69 Lakhs | Erlangen is 15-20% cheaper than Munich for the same lifestyle |

Note: Studierendenwerk Erlangen-Nürnberg halls are heavily subsidised but heavily oversubscribed; put your hall application in the day your admission letter arrives, since the queue for Summer 2027 rooms opens in January 2027. Miss the window and you look at €450-550 per month for a private WG room, adding INR 30,000-60,000 a year to your budget.
Erlangen’s cost profile is closer to Nuremberg than to Munich, and the Deutschland-Ticket lets you commute to Munich, Frankfurt, or Berlin on regional trains without extra fare. Health insurance is a hard requirement to enrol and to receive the residence permit, so factor in the €120-135 monthly premium upfront rather than treating it as optional.
Currency Tip: Your first tuition payment for the Summer 2027 intake falls due within ten working days of enrolment in April 2027. Route the payment through Wise or a forex card rather than a bank wire, forex cards save 2-3% on the EUR conversion and process in 24-48 hours, protecting the ten-day payment window.
Below is the combined cost picture for an Indian student in the Summer 2027 intake, covering tuition, living, and mandatory items. Living costs use the 12-month basis for Master’s and 10-month for Bachelor’s per academic-year rent conventions.
| Scenario | Tuition (Year 1) | Living (Year 1) | Mandatory Fees (Year 1) | Total Year 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MS AI or MS Computer Science (2-year, €4,000/sem) | €8,000 (INR 8.72 Lakhs) | €11,640 (INR 12.69 Lakhs) | €239 (INR 26,048) | €19,879 (INR 21.66 Lakhs) |
| MS Molecular Medicine or MS Mechanical Engineering (€6,000/sem) | €12,000 (INR 13.08 Lakhs) | €11,640 (INR 12.69 Lakhs) | €239 (INR 26,048) | €23,879 (INR 26.03 Lakhs) |
| MS Humanities (€2,000/sem) | €4,000 (INR 4.36 Lakhs) | €11,640 (INR 12.69 Lakhs) | €239 (INR 26,048) | €15,879 (INR 17.31 Lakhs) |
| Bachelor’s Engineering (3-year, €2,000/sem) | €4,000 (INR 4.36 Lakhs) | €9,700 (INR 10.57 Lakhs) | €239 (INR 26,048) | €13,939 (INR 15.19 Lakhs) |
Mandatory Fees include €164 (INR 17,874) semester contribution across two semesters and a €75 (INR 8,174) one-time German Student Visa fee paid at the New Delhi VFS centre. The full 2-year MS AI programme sums to roughly INR 43.26 Lakhs, and the 3-year Bachelor’s Engineering to roughly INR 45.41 Lakhs.
An education loan of INR 43 Lakhs at 10.5% for 10 years works out to an EMI of about INR 58,000 per month after graduation, well below the entry-level Germany graduate salary of €48,000-55,000 (INR 43.60-59.94 Lakhs) per year in the software, chemical, and mechanical engineering sectors that dominate FAU’s placement graph.
Key Insight: Even at the top €6,000-per-semester band, an Indian student’s total 2-year MS budget at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is INR 52-55 Lakhs, roughly 45% cheaper than a comparable UK Master’s (INR 90-100 Lakhs) and 60% cheaper than a US MS in the same subject (INR 1.2-1.5 Crore). The 18-month post-study residence permit in Germany plus a common route to EU Blue Card employment closes the payback gap further.
Funding your FAU Master’s? The full list of Indian and German scholarships plus dated 2027 deadlines is compiled in the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg Scholarships guide.

Tip for Indian Students: For the Summer 2027 intake, prioritise the DAAD Study Scholarship (deadline October-November 2026 for most Indian nominations) since it can cover tuition, living, and travel in one package. Layer an Indian award like JN Tata Endowment (February 2027 close) on top for the balance, this two-source stack routinely covers 80-100% of the INR 43 Lakh MS AI total.
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg does not require a seat-holding deposit; instead, tuition and semester contribution together fall due within ten working days of the enrolment payment notification sent after your admission is accepted. For a Summer 2027 MS AI seat that is €4,082 (INR 4.45 Lakhs) in April 2027, comprising the €4,000 tuition and €82 semester contribution.
Methods of payment accepted at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg:
Steps to pay tuition fees for international students at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg:
There is no full-payment discount at FAU, so paying two semesters in advance offers no financial advantage. Semester-by-semester payment (April and October each year) is the default and helps you draw down education loan tranches only as needed. Source: FAU Tuition Fees for Students from Non-EU States.
Tip for Indian Students: Start the SWIFT wire from your Indian bank at least seven working days before the FAU payment deadline; RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) needs A2 form submission plus PAN and student-visa proof, and any bank hold can push the transfer past the ten-day window and cost you your seat. If you already have your student visa, load a HDFC or ICICI forex card before flying out and pay the first instalment in-person at the FAU Student Service Center.
Beyond tuition and rent, several one-off and recurring costs catch Indian applicants off guard. Budget for these before the Summer 2027 intake to avoid a cash squeeze in the first two months.
Budget approximately INR 3.5-4.5 Lakhs for these first-year hidden costs, excluding the refundable blocked account and housing deposit. Adding the blocked account cash-flow requirement, first-year liquidity needs are closer to INR 16-17 Lakhs on Day 1.
Note: The APS certificate from the Indian APS office in New Delhi is the one item Indian families most often overlook; it now takes 4-6 weeks to issue and is compulsory for the FAU application itself, not just the visa. Start the APS application by September 2026 for a Summer 2027 intake so the certificate is in hand by the 15 January 2027 FAU deadline.
Because tuition at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg only kicks in from Summer 2027, the highest-leverage savings for the Indian applicant are around funding sources, tax deductions on the loan, and student-worker pay. The DAAD Study Scholarship alone can wipe out the tuition line entirely.
Tip for Indian Students: For the Summer 2027 intake, the single highest-value saving lever is combining the DAAD Study Scholarship (INR 22 Lakhs across two years) with a Werkstudent role in your second semester (INR 15-20 Lakhs across the full programme). Together they can net out the entire INR 43 Lakh MS AI budget, so plan the DAAD application first, then use the FAU careers portal in your first semester to line up the student-job role.
A 2-year MS Artificial Intelligence at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg costs INR 43-45 Lakhs all-in, against a graduate-hire salary of €48,000-55,000 (INR 52.32-59.94 Lakhs) per year in Germany’s software, chemical, and mechanical engineering sectors, so the programme pays back inside two working years for most Indian graduates.
University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is ranked 218 globally in QS World University Rankings 2027 (up from 232 in 2026) and 11th in Germany, with subject strengths at QS Chemical Engineering #5, Electrical Engineering #6, Materials Science #6, and Mechanical Engineering #8, all top-10 globally. Times Higher Education 2026 places it in the 201-250 band and US News Global 2025-26 at 288, mid-tier global research university with elite subject rankings.
Industry partnerships with Siemens (headquartered in Erlangen), Audi, adidas, and the Max Planck, Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, and Leibniz research societies give MS graduates a direct hiring pipeline; Siemens alone employs over 40,000 people in the Nuremberg-Erlangen metropolitan area and recruits actively from FAU. The 18-month post-study residence permit currently in force lets Indian graduates stay long enough to convert to an EU Blue Card, on which the salary threshold is €48,300 (INR 52.64 Lakhs) for 2026.
At INR 43 Lakhs total borrowed, the education loan EMI works out to INR 58,000 per month over ten years at 10.5%, versus a first-year take-home salary of INR 3.5-4 Lakhs per month post-tax in Germany. Loan-servicing is 15-17% of take-home, well within the RBI-suggested threshold.
Key Insight: Even at the €4,000-per-semester engineering tuition band, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg’s Master’s is 45-60% cheaper than a comparable UK or US degree and unlocks the same German salary ceiling. Payback horizon for the INR 43 Lakh total sits at roughly 2 years of post-study salary, one of the shortest ROI windows among top-250 global universities.
Comparing FAU to other German universities? Full course lists, English-taught programmes, and Indian-student outcomes are covered in the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg Overview page.
For the Summer 2027 intake, plan a headline budget of INR 43-45 Lakhs for a 2-year MS at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, of which the DAAD Study Scholarship can knock out INR 22 Lakhs and a Werkstudent role a further INR 15-20 Lakhs, leaving a net loan requirement close to zero for a well-planned candidate. An unsupported loan-only path is INR 58,000 per month EMI against a INR 3.5-4 Lakh monthly Germany salary, comfortably serviceable. The single action to take now is starting the APS certificate in September 2026 and lining up the DAAD application for the October 2026 window, so the 15 January 2027 FAU deadline is met with all documents already in hand.

The course has a total of 120 ECTS credit points (1 ECTS = 25-30 semester Hours). It also includes homework and assignments. Each semester has 30 ECTS points and for first two sem comprised of theoretical & practical modules from medical & biology faculty which is very exciting. There's also an ERASMUS SMP students mobility program for 8 -12 weeks in any EU counties and the faculty provides a travelling allowance up to 1000€ upon submission of valid payment invoices.
There are no tuition fees for the course as it's a publicly funded university. Every semester you pay contributions to the examination & students welfare association at the University which is less than 100€ per sem, it also includes a public transportation ticket for the entire semester making pocket friendly, As a law you need a blocked account worth 11208€ i.e. 934€ per month for securing your student's visa and university enrollment, academic expenses may include buying a laptop or other electronic accessories which may cost 500-1000€.
