Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants to FAU masters must clear the APS credential check, meet an English-proficiency minimum, and show course-content overlap with the target masters.
- PG academic: Bachelor’s with a minimum 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 in a related discipline (recommended threshold; individual programmes may ask higher for engineering masters)
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 85 to 90 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS 6.0 to 6.5, aligned to CEFR B2; some programmes accept the internal English placement test
- APS certificate: mandatory for every Indian applicant; obtained from the German embassy in New Delhi through the Akademische Prüfstelle
- Coursework match: transcript must show at least 50% subject overlap with the target masters (checked programme by programme by the admissions committee)
- UG academic: Class 12 with 70% to 85% plus a Studienkolleg pass or a completed year of Indian bachelors before applying (recommended)
- German language: DSH-2 or TestDaF 4 in each section for German-taught programmes
Key insight: FAU rarely waives the APS requirement, even for graduates of top IITs and NITs. Start APS documentation the moment the offer letter target is decided; the certificate remains valid for later applications too.
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Acceptance Rate 2027
FAU does not officially publish an admission rate. Third-party trackers place the overall acceptance rate at 46% (estimated), with English-taught engineering masters running visibly tighter at 25% to 35% (estimated) because of Indian and Southeast Asian volume.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 intake | 46% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2025 intake | 47% (estimated) | Stable |
| English-taught STEM masters | 25% to 35% (estimated) | Tightening on volume growth |
Admissions committees at FAU review each application individually against a coursework rubric, not a single grade cutoff. Indian applicants with strong CGPA (7.5+ on 10) and clear coursework overlap enjoy a materially higher hit rate than the headline number suggests.
Reality check: An Indian applicant with a 6.5 CGPA and no APS is a soft reject regardless of the headline 46% rate. The APS certificate and the coursework rubric filter Indian applications more heavily than the aggregate estimate implies.

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Campus, Facilities and Student Life
FAU spans three Bavarian cities: the medieval university town of Erlangen (main campus), the industrial hub of Nuremberg (business and social sciences), and Fürth (education). Regional trains connect all three within 30 minutes.
- Location and transport: Erlangen sits 20 minutes by S-Bahn (Bavaria’s suburban rail) from Nuremberg airport; the semester contribution covers this network end-to-end
- Housing: Studentenwerk halls at EUR 300 to 380 per month; no international guarantee, waiting lists common
- Notable facility: Cauerstraße engineering campus in Erlangen houses joint labs with Fraunhofer IIS, the birthplace of the MP3 codec
- Indian student community: around 1,200 Indian nationals across all faculties, with the strongest cluster in the engineering masters
What Indian students say: Erlangen is a walk-and-cycle town with genuine safety after dark, unlike parts of Berlin or Frankfurt. The trade-off is a smaller nightlife scene; most weekend activity shifts to Nuremberg’s Altstadt or day trips to Munich.
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Scholarships 2027
FAU does not offer full-tuition scholarships because tuition is already zero. Financial support instead flows through federal, state, and private living-cost grants that Indian masters students can apply to after enrolment.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deutschlandstipendium | Merit, living-cost | EUR 300 per month (INR 28,650) for 2 semesters (renewable) | All enrolled FAU students with strong academic record | Rolling, typically September to October each year |
| DAAD STIBET | Need-based, one-time grant | Verify at official page | Enrolled international masters students facing hardship | Verify at daad.de |
| DAAD Study Scholarship for Graduates | Merit, full living cost | EUR 992 per month (INR 94,740) | Indian graduates entering a German masters | Varies by subject group; verify at DAAD India |
Planning note: The Deutschlandstipendium selection reads course grades from the first FAU semester, so Indian students realistically apply after they have arrived. Plan the first-semester budget assuming no scholarship top-up.

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
FAU does not run centralised campus placements in the Indian sense. Hiring flows through the Career Service, industry lab collaborations, and direct student networking, all inside the Nuremberg-Erlangen industrial cluster.
- Median starting salary (STEM masters): EUR 55,000 (INR 52.5 lakh) per year (market median for German STEM masters; verify at DAAD career outcomes)
- Representative recruiters: Siemens (headquartered in Erlangen), Audi, adidas (Nuremberg region), Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Max Planck Society, Helmholtz Association, Leibniz Association
- Career Service: CV clinics, employer fairs, and coding challenges organised each semester at both Erlangen and Nuremberg campuses
- Post-study visa: German national D-visa allows an 18-month job-search stay after graduation, convertible to an EU Blue Card once salary crosses EUR 45,300 (INR 43.26 lakh) per year
- Indian alumni pattern: Siemens Digital Industries and Siemens Healthineers absorb a visible share of FAU’s Indian masters graduates each year
Insider note: Nuremberg’s tech hiring runs on referrals and internships, not on career-day booths. Indian students who take a paid Werkstudent role by semester 2 convert to full-time offers at a materially higher rate than those who wait for thesis-time recruitment.
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg vs Peer Universities
The comparison set below covers Germany’s engineering-strong public universities that share FAU’s tuition-free structure and industrial-cluster placement pattern.
| University | QS World 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (EUR/INR) | One-Line Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical University of Munich (TUM) | #22 (approx.; verify at qs) | EUR 0 (INR 0), public | Germany’s top-ranked technical university |
| RWTH Aachen | #99 (approx.; verify at qs) | EUR 0 (INR 0), public | Largest engineering-only campus in Germany |
| KIT Karlsruhe | #93 (approx.; verify at qs) | EUR 0 (INR 0), public | Research-intensive tech university, Helmholtz-linked |
| Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg | #218 | EUR 0 (INR 0), public | Deep Siemens and Fraunhofer research ecosystem |
| University of Stuttgart | #300+ band (approx.; verify at qs) | EUR 0 (INR 0), public | Automotive engineering pipeline (Mercedes, Porsche, Bosch) |
FAU’s edge is the density of its industrial partnerships in the Erlangen-Nuremberg corridor: Siemens headquarters, adidas, and multiple Fraunhofer institutes sit within a 30-minute train radius of the main campus. The trade-off is a lower aggregate QS rank than TUM or RWTH, offset by materially easier admission and near-guaranteed placement in Bavarian STEM firms.
Indian applicants with a strong engineering GPA, a tight coursework match, and an active career plan targeting Siemens or Fraunhofer land the best value here. Applicants with a broad "any German masters" profile who prioritise brand recognition over research fit should consider TUM or RWTH first, and treat FAU as the compliance-friendly, admission-accessible peer.
The two-year total investment lands near INR 25 lakh against a first-job median of INR 52.5 lakh per year, one of the fastest ROI paths open to an Indian STEM masters candidate in Europe, with the added benefit of an 18-month post-study stay in Germany. This suits applicants who want research-heavy engineering exposure, a Bavarian industrial network, and a clear Blue Card runway.
It is not the right pick for applicants seeking a name-brand global masters, a large English-medium bachelor’s portfolio, or a Munich-Berlin lifestyle. Those profiles should look at TU Munich for research prestige, or WHU Otto Beisheim for an English-taught business track.
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg FAQs
Ques. Does FAU charge any tuition fee for Indian masters students?
Ans. No, FAU charges no tuition for any masters programme, including for Indian nationals, because Bavarian state policy funds public university education. Indian masters students pay only a semester contribution of EUR 76 (INR 7,258) that covers student services and a regional transport pass. The application itself carries no fee, and Studentenwerk halls further reduce living cost pressure.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at FAU?
Ans. Yes, the German student visa allows Indian masters students to work 140 full days or 280 half days per year without additional permits. Werkstudent roles at Siemens, Fraunhofer IIS, and Siemens Healthineers in the Erlangen area pay EUR 15 to 22 (INR 1,432 to 2,101) per hour. These roles double as pipelines into full-time thesis and graduate offers.
Ques. Is GRE required for engineering masters admission at FAU?
Ans. No, GRE is not required for any FAU engineering masters, including MS Artificial Intelligence, MS Computational Engineering, and MS Advanced Signal Processing. FAU evaluates applicants on transcript coursework match, GPA, English proficiency, and APS certification. Indian applicants save the GRE fee and 3-month prep window that US-bound peers cannot.
Ques. How does an Indian applicant obtain the APS certificate for FAU?
Ans. Apply on the APS India portal, upload scanned transcripts and Class 10 to bachelor’s mark sheets, pay the fee of INR 18,000, and attend the interview at the German embassy in New Delhi. The certificate issues within 3 to 4 weeks after the interview. It stays valid for all future German university applications, so it is a one-time cost.
Ques. Which Indian banks recognise FAU for education loans?
Ans. All major Indian public and private banks recognise FAU as a listed foreign university for education loans, including SBI, Bank of Baroda, HDFC Credila, Avanse, and Auxilo. Since tuition is zero, loan sanction typically covers only the blocked account of EUR 11,904 (INR 11.31 lakh) and living costs. Sanction turnaround for FAU applications runs 2 to 3 weeks with an unconditional offer letter.
Ques. Can an FAU masters graduate stay in Germany after the degree?
Ans. Yes, every FAU masters graduate receives an automatic 18-month post-study residence permit to search for qualifying employment. Once salary crosses EUR 45,300 (INR 43.26 lakh) per year, the permit converts to an EU Blue Card, which becomes a permanent residence after 33 months. Indian STEM graduates from FAU typically cross this salary threshold in their first Siemens or Fraunhofer offer.
Ques. Are dependents allowed to accompany Indian students at FAU?
Ans. Yes, Indian FAU students on a national D-visa may bring a spouse and minor children under a dependent visa. The primary applicant must show a blocked account or scholarship proof plus proof of family accommodation. Spouses receive full work rights immediately, which materially improves household budget in the Nuremberg-Erlangen metro at Indian rupee terms.
Ques. What English test does FAU accept for MS Artificial Intelligence admission?
Ans. FAU accepts TOEFL iBT 85 to 90 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 for MS Artificial Intelligence, aligned to CEFR B2. The programme also accepts the FAU internal English placement test for applicants already inside Germany. Indian applicants from English-medium bachelor programmes may request a waiver by submitting the medium-of-instruction certificate along with the online application.
