University of Freiburg Top UG Programmes for Indian Students 2027

Freiburg’s bachelor’s catalogue is predominantly German-medium and typically demands DSH-2 or TestDaF 4 (German C1). Indian applicants without German usually target the university’s English-taught Liberal Arts and Sciences bachelor’s at UCF, or move directly into a master’s programme after finishing an Indian bachelor’s.

Programme Language of Instruction Total Fee (EUR) Total Fee (INR) Entry Requirement (Indian equivalent)
BA Liberal Arts and Sciences (UCF) English 10,140 11.05 lakh Class 12 minimum 75% (German 2.0/1.0); IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 95 (0-120 legacy scale)
BSc Computer Science German 10,140 11.05 lakh Class 12 plus one year Indian bachelor’s, or Studienkolleg; DSH-2 or TestDaF 4
BSc Environmental Sciences German 10,140 11.05 lakh Class 12 plus one year Indian bachelor’s, minimum 65%; German C1
LLB Law (Staatsexamen) German 10,140 11.05 lakh Class 12 plus Indian pre-law preparation; German C1
BSc Physics German 10,140 11.05 lakh Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics, minimum 65%; German C1

Insider note: Indian applicants overwhelmingly enter Freiburg through master’s programmes because English-taught bachelor’s are limited to Liberal Arts and Sciences at UCF. Within master’s, MSc Embedded Systems Engineering and MS Computer Science attract the largest Indian cohorts, followed by MS Economics.

University of Freiburg Admission 2027

According to the university’s Service Center Studium, University of Freiburg runs two intakes per year: Winter Semester starting in October and Summer Semester starting in April. Winter is the primary intake for Indian applicants and covers the widest programme selection across all faculties.

Milestone Date Notes for Indian Applicants
Winter Semester 2027/28 applications open 1 December 2026 Non-EU application cycle opens for most admission-restricted master’s programmes.
Non-EU deadline (Faculty of Engineering master’s) 15 May 2027  Earlier cutoff for MSc Embedded Systems Engineering and select engineering programmes.
Non-EU deadline (admission-restricted PG programmes) 15 July 2027 Applies to most consecutive master’s programmes; verify programme-specific dates on the university site.
Programme start 1 October 2027 Winter Semester 2027/28 orientation and coursework begin.

Planning note: APS certificate verification through the German embassy in New Delhi typically takes four to six weeks. Indian applicants should submit APS paperwork at least eight weeks before the earliest programme deadline so credentials arrive with the application file.

University of Freiburg Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants must clear APS verification and meet each programme’s academic and language thresholds. Freiburg does not require GRE or SAT for standard consecutive master’s programmes.

University of Freiburg PG Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants

The four thresholds below apply to most consecutive master’s programmes, with programme-specific overlays for engineering and psychology.

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university with minimum 65% (German equivalent 2.3/1.0 GPA); most programmes require a three or four-year degree aligned with the master’s specialisation.
  • English proficiency at C1 level: TOEFL iBT 95 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS Academic 7.0, or PTE Academic 76. B2 programmes accept TOEFL iBT 72 (legacy), IELTS 5.5, or PTE 59.
  • APS certificate is mandatory for all Indian applicants and is issued by the German embassy in New Delhi after transcript verification.
  • Select programmes require German C1 (DSH-2 or TestDaF 4). GRE and GMAT are optional and unrequested for standard MSc programmes.

University of Freiburg UG Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants

Indian bachelor’s applicants must meet German university entrance equivalence, which the standalone Indian Class 12 does not fulfil on its own.

  • Class 12 with minimum 75% plus one year of an Indian bachelor’s programme completed, or a Studienkolleg preparatory year in Germany.
  • English-taught bachelor’s require IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 95 (0-120 legacy scale). German-taught bachelor’s require DSH-2 or TestDaF 4.
  • APS certificate is mandatory before enrolment.

Key insight: The 65% threshold refers to first-attempt marks; supplementary or reappear marks are not counted by German admissions committees. Backlogs also weigh against applicants during selection, so Indian applicants should time applications to avoid open backlogs.

University of Freiburg Acceptance Rate 2027

University of Freiburg does not publish an institution-wide acceptance rate. Selection is programme-specific and depends on academic thresholds, language scores and APS status.

Based on aggregated programme-level admission trackers, the overall acceptance rate at Freiburg is estimated at around 40% (as per 3rd party stats). Faculty of Engineering programmes such as MSc Embedded Systems Engineering and MS Computer Science apply a stricter selection filter closer to 25 to 30 percent, while open-admission programmes in humanities admit most qualifying applicants. Indian applicants typically face additional filtering through the APS process before their file reaches the programme committee.

Reality check: The 40% estimate hides wide programme variance. Indian applicants targeting engineering master’s should treat the effective rate as 25 to 30% and apply to two or three shortlisted programmes across faculties to hedge outcomes.

University of Freiburg Fees and Cost of Living for Indian Students 2027

Total annual cost for a non-EU master’s student at Freiburg lands between EUR 12,260 and 15,260 per year (INR 13.36 to 16.63 lakh), combining tuition and mid-range Freiburg living costs.

University of Freiburg Tuition Fees for Indian Students 2027

Bachelor’s and consecutive master’s programmes both charge EUR 1,500 per semester in tuition plus EUR 190 as the semester contribution covering public transport, student union services and administration. Non-consecutive master’s programmes such as Renewable Energy Engineering follow their own fee schedules.

Programme Level Per Semester (EUR / INR) Programme Total (EUR / INR)
Bachelor’s (6 semesters) 1,690 / INR 1.84 lakh 10,140 / INR 11.05 lakh
Master’s Consecutive (4 semesters) 1,690 / INR 1.84 lakh 6,760 / INR 7.37 lakh

University of Freiburg Monthly Cost of Living in Freiburg for Indian Students

As per the Studierendenwerk Freiburg housing office, rent varies most across student expenses. Shared apartments (WG) run EUR 400 to 550 monthly while private studios can double that amount. Public transport is included in the semester ticket.

Expense Monthly (EUR) Monthly (INR)
Accommodation (WG shared room) 400 to 550 43,600 to 59,950
Food and groceries 200 to 250 21,800 to 27,250
Public transport (semester ticket) Included Included
Books and study materials 40 4,360
Personal and leisure 100 to 150 10,900 to 16,350
Total monthly 740 to 990 80,660 to 1.08 lakh
Total annual 8,880 to 11,880 9.68 to 12.95 lakh

Insider note: The German student visa requires proof of EUR 11,904 per year (INR 12.98 lakh) in a Blocked Account for 2026, revised annually by the Federal Foreign Office. Indian applicants should factor this upfront lock-in when planning finances alongside tuition.

University of Freiburg Campus, Facilities and Student Life

Freiburg’s campus is distributed across the city rather than centralised on one plot. The historic Kollegiengebaude I sits in the old town while the Faculty of Engineering occupies a modern precinct to the north. The city itself sits on the edge of the Black Forest with strong public transport into central Europe.

  • Location: Freiburg im Breisgau, southwestern Germany, 20 minutes to the French border and 90 minutes by train to Basel in Switzerland.
  • Housing: Studierendenwerk Freiburg runs 21 halls of residence with rooms from EUR 260 to 450 monthly, though guaranteed places for international students are limited. Most Indian applicants find WG shared flats through WG-Gesucht.
  • Facilities: The University Library (UB) is one of Germany’s largest with three million volumes and 24-hour access during exam periods.
  • Indian community: An active Indian Students Association at Freiburg coordinates orientation, cultural events and mentorship for new arrivals.

Aggregated student reviews of University of Freiburg from independent trackers consistently flag rent as the biggest budget line and highlight the walkable city as a quality-of-life plus.

What Indian students say: Rent is the largest monthly expense and WG availability tightens four to six weeks before semester start. A bicycle is essential as Freiburg is among Germany’s most bike-friendly cities. Basic German B1 helps considerably for daily administrative tasks even inside English-medium programmes.

University of Freiburg Scholarships 2027

Freiburg does not administer a large university-only merit scholarship pool for international students. Indian applicants primarily rely on DAAD, Deutschlandstipendium and Baden-Wurttemberg state scholarships alongside external funding.

Scholarship Type Award Value Eligibility Deadline
DAAD EPOS Full Approximately EUR 992 per month plus travel and health insurance Master’s applicants from India for DAAD-listed development-relevant programmes Varies by programme; verify at daad.de
Deutschlandstipendium Merit EUR 300 per month for two semesters Enrolled bachelor’s or master’s students, including international Applications typically September to November each year

[Source: DAAD, Deutschlandstipendium, Baden-Wurttemberg-Stiftung]

Planning note: Per DAAD guidance, EPOS remains the largest full-scholarship route for Indian master’s applicants at Freiburg. Programme-level DAAD listings change each year, so Indian applicants must check whether their target Freiburg programme appears on the current EPOS list before applying.

In QS Subject Rankings 2026, Freiburg places at global rank 175 in Medicine (8th in Germany) and inside the top 150 in Anatomy and Physiology, English Language and Literature, and Geography.

Key insight: Freiburg’s top-10 German placement in THE and top-15 in QS translates directly to employer recognition in continental Europe. For Indian applicants, this matters because German employers use the DAAD H+ list and QS or THE rankings as recruitment filters, and Freiburg qualifies on both.

University of Freiburg Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Freiburg does not run a centralised placement cell in the Indian sense. Career outcomes for master’s graduates depend on programme, faculty and post-study visa use. Employment within six months of graduation trends around 75 to 85% for engineering and computer science master’s, tracking with national German benchmarks.

  • Median starting salary: Approximately EUR 55,000 per year (INR 60 lakh) for MSc engineering and computer science graduates; Germany market median from national salary trackers (not university-published).
  • Top recruiter sectors: Automotive engineering, medical devices, renewables, semiconductor design, biotechnology and academic research (sector view; university does not publish an official recruiter list).
  • Representative regional employers: SAP, Bosch, Roche, Basler and Fraunhofer institutes recruit from Freiburg cohorts in the Baden-Wurttemberg belt (representative examples; not an official placement list).
  • Career support: Freiburg Career Service runs application workshops, employer fairs and post-study visa guidance for international students.

Insider note: The German post-study job search visa gives Indian graduates 18 months to find employment. Most Freiburg engineering and computer science graduates convert to the EU Blue Card within nine months of graduation, given Germany’s shortage of STEM talent.

University of Freiburg vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers other top German research universities plus one specialist alternative, ordered by QS World Rankings 2027 for a direct comparison. For Indian applicants targeting business degrees, the peer view shifts entirely toward MBA universities in Germany such as Mannheim and ESMT Berlin, which follow a different admission and fee structure than research-master’s universities.

University QS Rank 2027 Acceptance Rate Avg Annual PG Fee (EUR / INR) Median Salary (EUR / INR) Differentiator
University of Freiburg 245 Around 40%  3,380 / INR 3.68 lakh 55,000 / INR 60 lakh  Strong life sciences and sustainability research

University of Tubingen 218 Around 30%  3,380 / INR 3.68 lakh 54,000 / INR 58.9 lakh  Comparable Baden-Wurttemberg profile with strong humanities
University of Stuttgart 322 Around 35%  3,380 / INR 3.68 lakh 62,000 / INR 67.6 lakh  Engineering focus within Baden-Wurttemberg

[Source: QS 2027; market medians from national salary trackers]

Freiburg stands out in this peer set for combined strength in life sciences and sustainability, backed by extensive Fraunhofer and Max Planck partnerships in the city. Its tuition sits identical to other Baden-Wurttemberg universities, and research funding per capita and international faculty share both exceed the state average. For Indian students, Freiburg’s advantages centre on Germany’s generous post-study job search allowance for graduates, lower tuition than private European alternatives, and a compact university city that established Indian communities have made welcoming across academic and social life.

FAQs

Ques. What is the application fee at University of Freiburg for Indian applicants?

Ans. The University of Freiburg does not charge a separate application fee for consecutive master’s or bachelor’s programmes for Indian applicants. However, applicants must pay for APS certificate verification, which costs around INR 25,000 through the German embassy in New Delhi. Some non-consecutive master’s programmes such as Renewable Energy Engineering may charge a programme-specific application fee, so applicants should verify with the programme coordinator before submission.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at Freiburg?

Ans. Yes, non-EU students on a German student visa may work 140 full days or 280 half days per calendar year. Freiburg students commonly work as HiWi student research assistants inside the university at rates of EUR 12 to 15 per hour, or find part-time roles in tourism and retail across the city. Working during the first semester is generally discouraged since coursework intensity is high.

Ques. Does University of Freiburg accept Duolingo English Test scores?

Ans. The University of Freiburg’s language certificate policy does not officially list the Duolingo English Test among accepted scores. Freiburg accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, telc University, TOEIC and OOPT. Indian applicants relying on Duolingo should contact the specific programme coordinator before applying, since some programme committees accept it on a case-by-case basis for admissions at the applicant’s own risk.

Ques. How does the Anglo-German Master in Psychology at Freiburg work for Indian applicants?

Ans. The Anglo-German Master in Psychology is a joint programme run with partner English-speaking universities that allows study in English alongside select German-taught modules. Indian applicants apply through the Faculty of Psychology and must clear both English C1 and basic German A2 requirements. The programme runs across four semesters at 120 ECTS and prepares graduates for research and clinical pathways in either country.

Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for University of Freiburg?

Ans. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank all offer education loans for admitted students at University of Freiburg. Loans typically cover tuition, blocked account funding and living costs up to INR 40 lakh. Freiburg qualifies as a DAAD-listed public research university, which helps borrowers secure lower interest rates. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing also cover Freiburg for no-cosigner loans.

Ques. Are there dependent visa options for Freiburg students?

Ans. German student visa holders can apply for a dependent visa for spouse and children after completing the initial student visa formalities in India. Financial proof requires an additional EUR 6,024 per year (INR 6.57 lakh) in the Blocked Account for the spouse, plus around EUR 4,500 per year for each child. The dependent spouse can work full-time on this visa once residence is granted.

Ques. What is Freiburg’s refund policy on withdrawn admissions?

Ans. If the University of Freiburg withdraws or cancels admission before enrolment, the semester contribution of EUR 190 is refunded in full and the EUR 1,500 tuition is refunded if already paid. If the student withdraws voluntarily after enrolment, refunds follow Baden-Wurttemberg state law and require a written application within the first four weeks of the semester. Later withdrawals typically forfeit the tuition portion.

Ques. Does University of Freiburg require an interview for master’s admissions?

Ans. Most consecutive master’s programmes at the University of Freiburg do not require interviews and rely instead on transcripts, motivation letters and language scores. Selective programmes such as MSc Economics, Anglo-German Psychology and MSc Renewable Energy Engineering may invite shortlisted candidates for online interviews. These interviews focus on academic motivation, research alignment and past project work rather than case-style problem solving.

  • There is only one campus for the technical faculty, and it is fairly equipped. There is a student dorm on the campus itself. The student council of the technical faculty and the tutors of the student dorm organize various extracurricular activities throughout the year. Apart from this, other faculties at the University of Freiburg and SWFR will also organize various events.
  • There is a library at the technical faculty, but there is also a big library in the city centre. There are Fraunhofer research institutes near the campus, which are a good source of potential student jobs and careers.

Fees

  • The tuition fee is 1500 for international students, as this is the rule in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg.

Overview

I would say that it's exciting and challenging and the infrastructure is top notch. There are also a lot of systems in place to support international students. There are a lot of possibilities for one to advance as a student and as a professional. The courses are not easy and one would require a fair bit of self-discipline.
