University of Leipzig offers admissions to students worldwide. Having a total enrollment of around 28,000 students, Leipzig University is one of the biggest universities in Germany. The most highlighting part of the admission process is the luckydraw i.e. if two candidates are equally eligible for admission, then the admission will be decided by drawing lots or lucky draw. As of now, the university offers more than 140 courses including graduate and undergraduate majors.

University of Leipzig International Student Admissions

The process of admission for Leipzig University needs lots of documents and patience. Applicants are advised to fill the application carefully. Additionally, foreign students have to pass an aptitude test called TestAS which is a central, standardized aptitude test for foreign students (applicable for courses with restrictive admissions). By taking TestAS, an applicant has the opportunity to improve their grades and increase their chances to get admitted to the first semester of study on a restricted program.

Admission Requirements for International Students

  • English or German language proficiency scores as per requirements of course
  • All certified transcripts from previously attended institutions. All transcripts must be translated and certified from an authentic agency
  • Personal statement, resume, letters of recommendation, etc.
  • Most masters programs require an aptitude test (Eignungsfeststellungsprüfung, EFP) or an evaluation of subject-specific admission requirements (fachliche Zugangsvoraussetzungen, FZV).
  • Visa requirements as per norms
  • Additional requirements may vary according to the selected course

Visa Process for International Student

Students from the European Union, European economic area and countries listed here do not require a visa to enter the Republic of Germany.

All other applicants need a valid visa to study in Germany, especially students intending to stay in Germany for more than three months.

Process :

  • In order to apply for a visa, candidates have to provide the following documents:
    • Copy of passport,
    • Letter of admission (or a student application visa in case of not having admission letter or decision awaited in admission)
    • Proof of finance
    • Minimum deposit of 8640 euros in German blocked bank account as proof of finance. Students can withdraw not more than 720 euros a month.
    • Declaration of commitment
  • Applicants have to visit the German embassy and submit the above-mentioned documents and have to pay application fees
  • The application fee is 60 euros
  • Health insurance is a must for all applicants. The average cost of insurance is 80 euros per month.
  • If everything goes well then you can expect the visa in 4-6 weeks.

University of Leipzig Undergraduate Admissions

Leipzig University offers bachelor courses for winter and summer semesters only. Further, courses are divided into two parts: 1. Degrees without restriction 2. Degrees with national restriction

There are only 9 undergraduate courses offered by the university. Some of them are BSc in Physics (without national restriction), West Slavonic BA (without national restriction), British studies BA (with national restriction) etc. No aptitude test needed for undergraduate courses.

Applicants seeking admission to graduate-level programs offered at Leipzig University must hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. Also, the degree should be relevant according to the chosen course. For instance, if you have to apply for MA in Mass Communication than your bachelor's degree must be related to the respective field.
