Admission Status. Opens January (est.). Master applications for the Winter Semester 2027/28 primary intake open on 1 January 2027 and close on 30 April 2027 through the University of Siegen unisono portal. Bachelor applications for Summer Semester 2027 are open now on hochschulstart.de and close 15 January 2027. There is no application fee for any programme.

University of Siegen admissions run entirely through the university’s own unisono portal, not through uni-assist, so Indian applicants upload documents once without a central-agency review fee. Undergraduate entry expects a Class XII pass around 65 percent with recognized higher-secondary boards, and Master entry expects a relevant Bachelor’s at roughly 65 percent (German grade 2.5) or better plus subject-specific ECTS.

  • Next live deadline: Master programs for the Winter Semester 2027/28 primary intake close on 30 April 2027, with the portal opening 1 January 2027.
  • Base tuition and application fee: EUR 0 tuition plus a mandatory semester contribution of EUR 330 (around INR 36,548) that includes the Deutschlandticket; no application fee is charged.
  • Eligibility floor: UG applicants need Class XII at 65 percent or higher; PG applicants need a relevant Bachelor’s at 2.5 or better (around 65 percent) with an IELTS 6.0 minimum, rising to IELTS 6.5 for ETI Computer Science and HCI.
  • Acceptance rate: The university does not publish an official figure; third-party estimates place institution-wide entry at around 50 to 60 percent, given that 93.9 percent of programmes are admission-free.

Popular English-taught choices for Indian students at Siegen include the MSc Mechatronics, ETI International Master in Computer Science, and MSc Human-Computer Interaction, and student sentiment across public forums highlights the tuition-free structure, English-taught STEM depth, and the direct unisono workflow as key reasons to apply. For a fuller institutional picture, see the University of Siegen overview for Indian students.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use EUR 1 = INR 110.75, the live rate on 17 September 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

University of Siegen Application Deadlines for Indian Students

The University of Siegen operates two intakes each academic year, Winter Semester starting 1 October and Summer Semester starting 1 April. The Winter Semester is the primary intake for Indian applicants because almost every English-taught Master and every Bachelor route open there, while Summer takes a limited set of programmes only. Deadlines below come from the official University of Siegen dates and deadlines page and the individual programme pages.

Siegen’s primary intake for Indian students is Winter Semester (October start) — most Master programmes open here.

University of Siegen Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at Siegen is set separately for undergraduate and graduate entry, and both tracks have a distinct academic floor and a language floor. Indian qualifications are evaluated against the German grade scale using the Bavarian formula, and a Bachelor’s grade of 2.5 in the German system corresponds to roughly 65 percent under most Indian universities. Programme-specific pages (linked in the next section) can raise these floors.

  • UG general entry: Class XII at 65 percent or higher from a recognized Indian board, with a pre-tertiary university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) assessment.
  • PG general entry: Relevant Bachelor’s at German grade 2.5 or better (around 65 percent), typically a 6-semester degree with subject-specific ECTS in the target discipline.
  • ETI Master in Computer Science: Bachelor with 20 CP mathematics, 30 CP CS foundations and programming, 10 CP theoretical CS, 20 CP practical CS, and 15 CP computer engineering.
  • MSc Human-Computer Interaction: Bachelor in Computer Science, Business Information Systems, Design, Psychology, or Sociology with at least 60 ECTS in relevant subjects.
  • MSc Mechatronics: First professionally qualifying degree in an engineering subject.
  • Mandatory: Valid APS certificate for every Indian applicant, without exception.

English Language Requirements at University of Siegen

Siegen uses B2 CEFR as the baseline for English-taught programmes but higher floors apply on flagship Master courses. Score reports must be less than 2 years old at application (3 years for HCI). The table below reflects verified minimums from each programme’s official page.

ProgrammeIELTS Min.TOEFL iBT Min.PTE / Cambridge
MSc Mechatronics6.088PTE 61 or Cambridge First 175
ETI Master in Computer Science6.588Cambridge CAE Level C (PTE and Duolingo not accepted)
MSc Human-Computer Interaction6.594PTE 58 or Cambridge B2 First Grade B
MSc Electrical Engineering6.088B2 CEFR equivalent accepted

University of Siegen IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Siegen publishes a country-of-instruction waiver: applicants whose prior degree was delivered in a country where English is the primary official language (Australia, Canada excluding Quebec, Ireland, New Zealand, UK, USA, and select Caribbean nations) do not submit IELTS or TOEFL. Indian applicants do not qualify for this waiver, and confirmations that a Bachelor was taught in English are not accepted in lieu of a test score. Plan a test date at least six weeks before the deadline.

Insider note: If your test date falls after 30 April 2027, upload an official confirmation letter from IELTS or ETS showing the scheduled date, and the admissions team will hold the file for the released score.

University of Siegen PG Programs and English Scores

Siegen’s English-taught Master portfolio spans engineering, computer science, natural sciences, business, and social sciences. Every PG programme charges zero base tuition; only the semester contribution of EUR 330 (around INR 36,548) applies. University of Siegen UG Programs and Entry Requirements

Undergraduate entry at Siegen is heavily German-taught, and Indian applicants must therefore clear TestDaF or DSH-2 as the language route rather than IELTS. The two English-taught Bachelor tracks are English teacher-education degrees. Base tuition is EUR 0, with only the semester contribution.

ProgrammeDurationMinimum EligibilityEnglish Req. Min.

Indian applicants targeting a German-taught Bachelor typically enrol in a one-year Studienkolleg first if their Class XII does not directly qualify for Hochschulzugangsberechtigung. For the full Siegen programme list, see the courses page.

University of Siegen PhD Admissions

Doctoral admission at Siegen is decentralised: candidates apply directly to a chair or research group after securing a supervisor, not through unisono. The APS certificate is not required for doctoral candidates, which is one of the few exemptions Indian applicants receive under German immigration rules.

Siegen PhD Steps for Indian Applicants

  • Find a supervisor: Identify a professor whose research aligns with your Master’s thesis and send a research proposal with CV.
  • Receive acceptance: The chair issues a written acceptance letter that names your doctoral topic.
  • Register with the faculty: Submit acceptance, transcripts, and thesis outline to the Faculty Dean’s Office for doctoral matriculation.
  • Enrol in unisono: Doctoral candidates enrol as students each semester and pay only the EUR 330 (around INR 36,548) semester contribution.

How is PhD funding structured at Siegen?

Most doctoral candidates hold a research or teaching contract at their chair, typically paid on the German public-service TV-L E13 scale (65 to 100 percent). External applicants often bring a DAAD Research Grant, which pays EUR 1,300 monthly (around INR 1.44 Lakhs) for doctoral candidates. For a scholarship-by-scholarship breakdown, check the funding for Indian students on the Siegen programme list.

Insider note: Reach out to potential supervisors between January and March 2027 for a Winter 2027/28 doctoral start, since chair-level contract slots close early.

Note: Individual chairs may add subject-specific research or language requirements beyond the university minimums. Confirm with your prospective supervisor before applying.

Siegen Application Process and Unisono Portal

The University of Siegen handles applications through unisono, its own online portal, and not through uni-assist. This spares Indian applicants the uni-assist review fee that other German universities charge. The process is 100 percent online at the application stage, and hard copies are needed only at on-campus enrolment.

  1. Book the APS interview at the German Embassy in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, or Kolkata at least 8 to 12 weeks before the deadline.
  2. Book your English test (IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or programme-accepted equivalent) at least 6 weeks before the deadline.
  3. Register on unisono at https://unisono.uni-siegen.de/ with a personal email and complete the self-registration form.
  4. Fill the online application: Enter academic history, choose the target programme, select Winter Semester 2027/28, and upload documents.
  5. No application fee is charged by Siegen — proceed directly to submission without any payment step.
  6. Submit before 30 April 2027 at 23:59 CEST for Winter Semester 2027/28 Master intake.
  7. Track status: Monitor the unisono dashboard for status changes, requests for clarification, or interview invitations.

Planning note: Siegen does not issue conditional admission letters for visa purposes, so applicants must have every document ready at the point of submission.

University of Siegen Admission Decisions Timeline

Decisions on Master applications are issued in two waves after the deadline: an eligibility screening in May, then a Zulassungsbescheid (admission letter) in June and July. ETI CS candidates also sit an online test and interview during May and June, focused on computer-science fundamentals.

  • May 2027: Eligibility screening completed; ineligible files are rejected via unisono.
  • May to June 2027: ETI CS online test and specialisation interview for shortlisted candidates.
  • June to July 2027: Zulassungsbescheid issued to selected candidates through unisono.
  • Acceptance: Candidates confirm the offer within 2 weeks of the letter to hold the seat.
  • Deferral: One-semester deferral is possible on written request to the admissions office in exceptional cases (visa delay, medical).

Siegen Documents Required for Indian Students

Every document uploaded to unisono must be a scan of the certified copy, in English or German. Original hard copies are only checked at on-campus enrolment. Missing files after the deadline result in automatic rejection.

  • Passport bio-data page valid for at least 15 months beyond intake start.
  • APS certificate issued by the German Embassy in India.
  • Class X and Class XII mark sheets with certified English translations.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and semester-wise transcripts.
  • English test score report (IELTS TRF, TOEFL iBT, or programme-accepted equivalent).
  • Letter of motivation tailored to the programme (max 2 A4 pages for HCI).
  • Curriculum vitae in the Europass format is preferred but not required.
  • Prerequisite sheet for ETI CS mapping your Bachelor coursework to the required 95+ ECTS.
  • Portrait photograph in biometric format for enrolment card.
  • Work-experience letters where the programme places weight on prior industry exposure (Mechatronics, BIS).

University of Siegen Acceptance Rate

The University of Siegen does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party estimates place institution-wide entry between 50 and 60 percent, based on the fact that 93.9 percent of Siegen’s programmes carry no numerus clausus and admit every applicant meeting the stated eligibility floor.

What raises acceptance chances at Siegen?

Meeting the ECTS distribution matters more than raw GPA. On the ETI Master, applicants who tick every prerequisite line (mathematics, CS foundations, theoretical CS, practical CS, computer engineering) usually clear the eligibility screen even at 65 percent aggregate. Chances drop when the transcript is short on any single line, since Siegen does not run bridge modules for missing CP.

Which Siegen programmes are more selective?

The English-taught engineering Masters (Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, HCI) tighten the funnel through the language floor (IELTS 6.5 for HCI and ETI CS) and specialisation-fit review, not through published rank cut-offs. See the university’s ranking band and subject placement for programme-level competitive context.

Insider note: For ETI CS, a Bachelor transcript short on theoretical CS credits is the single most common eligibility rejection Indian applicants receive — map every course against the CP grid before you file.

Germany Student Visa Process for Siegen

Indian students admitted to Siegen apply for the German National Visa for study purposes (visa category D) at the VFS Global centres representing the German Missions in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, or Kolkata. Processing takes 6 to 12 weeks, so book the interview slot the day the admission letter arrives.

Financial proof is the pivotal document. As of the 2027 rate, Indian applicants must show EUR 11,904 (around INR 13.18 Lakhs) in a German blocked account, with EUR 992 (around INR 1.10 Lakhs) released monthly for living costs. Alternative routes include a formal sponsorship (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a resident in Germany or a recognised scholarship award letter. The admission letter, APS certificate, health insurance for the travel period, and Motivationsschreiben are also required at the visa interview. After landing in Siegen, register with the Bürgeramt within 14 days and convert the entry visa to a residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde.

2026 update: The blocked account minimum stays at EUR 11,904 for the 2027 cycle, confirmed by the Federal Foreign Office; open the account with Fintiba, Expatrio, or Deutsche Bank at least 8 weeks before the visa interview.

Tips and Application Checklist for University of Siegen

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Siegen and the university’s own guidance for the Winter Semester 2027/28 cycle. Sequence matters here because the APS interview and language test both have queues Indian applicants cannot compress.

  • Start APS in October 2026 for a Winter Semester 2027/28 intake, since embassy slots fill fastest between December and February.
  • Book the IELTS or TOEFL slot 8 to 10 weeks before 30 April 2027 so a rescheduled test still leaves time for the score to reach unisono.
  • Map your Bachelor transcript to the ETI CS or HCI CP grid before applying — Siegen does not offer bridge modules.
  • Open the blocked account after you receive the Zulassungsbescheid but before booking the visa interview.
  • Request university-issued English translations of your transcripts if your Indian university offers them — they carry more weight than notarised commercial translations.
  • Track unisono weekly after submission; Siegen posts document-shortfall requests only through the portal, not by email.
  • Write a programme-specific motivation letter — reusing one for Mechatronics and HCI is a common cause of soft rejection at the specialisation-fit stage.
  • Book a flight only after the residence permit appointment at the Ausländerbehörde is set, since visa D delays can shift arrival by 2 weeks.

University of Siegen offers Indian students a zero-tuition, English-taught engineering and computer-science path with a direct unisono portal, no application fee, and a straightforward APS-plus-IELTS entry route. Plan a Winter 2027/28 start, close the 30 April 2027 deadline, and treat the ECTS grid as the real gatekeeper.

If your degree was earned in a country whose official language is English as recognized by the university, you will be exempted from submitting a valid ELP test score. Otherwise you will be asked to submit a valid ELP test score to prove your language proficiency.
