Free University of Berlin admissions turn on academic fit for Indian applicants, asking Bachelor’s candidates for a Class XII score of at least 70 percent and Master’s candidates for a subject-matched Bachelor’s degree with the ECTS mix each programme lists.
- Next live deadline is 31 May 2027 for the primary Winter Semester 2027/28 restricted Master’s intake.
- Zero tuition across Bachelor’s and consecutive Master’s, semester fee EUR 376.80 (around INR 41,143), uni-assist application fee EUR 75 (around INR 8,189).
- UG needs Class XII at 70 percent with English B2; PG needs a matching Bachelor’s with IELTS 5.5 to 7.0 by programme.
- Institutional acceptance rate around 15 percent, tighter for English-taught Master’s like Data Science.
Indian applicants at Free University of Berlin cluster in MS Data Science, MS Bioinformatics, and MS Finance, Accounting and Taxation, with alumni feedback flagging strong research supervision and Berlin’s low cost of living as recurring wins.
Admission Status: Opens December 2026. The next application window opens 1 December 2026 for the Summer Semester 2027 intake, closing 15 January 2027 for the limited Master’s programmes accepting summer entries. The primary Winter Semester 2027/28 intake opens 20 April 2027 with a 31 May 2027 deadline for restricted Master’s programmes. Free University of Berlin Application Deadlines
Free University of Berlin runs two intakes a year — Summer Semester starting in April and Winter Semester starting in October. Winter is the primary intake, where every Bachelor’s programme and the widest set of Master’s programmes open to Indian applicants. A smaller Summer window accepts a limited set of Master’s cohorts, mostly in the sciences.
Programmes split into restricted (NC, Numerus Clausus, capped seats) and unrestricted (open, no cap) tracks. Restricted Master’s close first at 31 May, unrestricted at 15 August. Dates below are per the official Freie Universität Berlin deadlines page. Free University of Berlin’s primary intake for Indian students is Winter Semester — most Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes open there.
| Intake | Level | App Opens | Deadline | App Fee | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer Semester 2027 | Master’s (limited set) | 1 December 2026 | 15 January 2027 | EUR 75 (INR 8,189) | uni-assist plus FU portal |

Planning note: The FU Berlin deadlines page publishes final Summer 2027 and Winter 2027/28 dates each March. The dates above match the fixed annual cycle Free University of Berlin has held for the past three intakes, so plan around them and re-check the page in April 2027 for any programme-level shifts.
Free University of Berlin Eligibility for Indian Students
Free University of Berlin sets separate academic and language thresholds by degree level, with programme-specific ECTS overlays at the Master’s tier. Indian applicants clear the university’s baseline when their transcripts translate cleanly through uni-assist’s Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD, a preliminary review of your Indian marks against German grading).
- UG general entry: Class XII at 70 percent plus one successful Bachelor’s year at an Indian university, or completion of a German Studienkolleg foundation course.
- PG general entry: a Bachelor’s degree with 180 ECTS and a strong subject match — computer science for Data Science, economics or law for FACTS, biology and chemistry for Bioinformatics.
- English proficiency: B1 for select Bachelor’s programmes, B2 for most English-taught Master’s like Bioinformatics and FACTS, C1 for MS Data Science, MS Computer Science, and MA International Relations.
- APS certificate: mandatory for every Indian applicant, issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre at the German embassy in New Delhi after your school and university documents are verified.
- dMAT test: from Summer 2027 onwards, Indian Master’s applicants from Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or Management backgrounds must submit a Digital Master Test certificate through APS.
Free University of Berlin English Waiver for Indian Students
If your Indian Bachelor’s degree was taught entirely in English, Freie Universität Berlin accepts a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your university in place of an IELTS or TOEFL score. Graduates of IIT, NIT, IIIT, BITS Pilani, and most private universities where the whole Bachelor’s runs in English typically qualify. Some programmes still ask for a formal test at C1 — MS Data Science, MS Computer Science, and MA International Relations flag this on their own pages, so verify before skipping the test.
| Test | B1 Minimum | B2 Minimum | C1 Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic or General | 4.0 to 5.0 | 5.5 to 6.5 | 7.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 42 to 71 | 72 to 94 | 95 and above |
| PTE Academic | 43 to 58 | 59 to 75 | 76 and above |
| Cambridge (CAE or CPE) | B1 Preliminary | B2 First | C1 Advanced (180 total) |
| TOEIC (Reading + Listening) | 550+ | 785+ | Not accepted for C1 |
Insider note: Duolingo English Test is not accepted at Freie Universität Berlin — send IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Cambridge instead. Test certificates older than two years are rejected, so line your test window up with your submission cycle.
Free University of Berlin PG Programs and English Scores
Master’s programmes at Free University of Berlin run four semesters (120 ECTS) and follow the German consecutive Master’s model, which builds directly on a subject-matched Bachelor’s. See the full programme list on Collegedunia for the wider catalogue.

Free University of Berlin UG Programs and Class XII Cutoffs
Free University of Berlin admits Indian Bachelor’s applicants through one of two pathways: direct entry after one successful year at an Indian Bachelor’s programme, or completion of a Studienkolleg foundation course in Germany. Class XII alone does not qualify. From Winter Semester 2026/27, both pathways require a Class XII score of 70 percent or higher.
Most Bachelor’s programmes are taught in German, so a certified German B2 or C1 qualification (usually TestDaF, DSH, or Goethe C1) matters more than English for undergraduate entry. English at B1 or B2 is separately required for programmes with English course components. Semester contribution stays at EUR 376.80 (INR 41,143).
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSc Business Administration (BWL) | 6 semesters | Class XII at 70 percent or higher, one successful year of an Indian Bachelor’s, plus German C1 (TestDaF or DSH) | IELTS 5.5 (B2) |
| BSc Bioinformatics | 6 semesters | Class XII at 70 percent with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, plus German C1 | Not required (German-taught) |
| BA Political Science | 6 semesters | Class XII at 70 percent, one Indian Bachelor’s year in social sciences, plus German C1 | IELTS 4.0 (B1) |
| BA English Philology (English Language and Literature) | 6 semesters | Class XII at 70 percent, plus proof of English at C1 level | IELTS 7.0 (C1) |
| BSc Computer Science | 6 semesters | Class XII at 70 percent with Mathematics, one Indian Bachelor’s year in CS, plus German C1 | Not required (German-taught) |
Free University of Berlin PhD Pathways for Indian Students
Free University of Berlin runs doctoral work through two routes: individual doctorates supervised by a professor at a Fachbereich (faculty), and structured PhD programmes at the Dahlem Research School and the Berlin School of Integrative Oncology. Both close with a Dr. rer. nat. or Dr. phil. degree. There is no institution-wide deadline — most doctoral candidates apply directly to a supervisor at any time, while structured programmes run their own calls.
Free University of Berlin Individual Doctorate Route
You approach a professor whose research aligns with your Master’s thesis, agree a topic, and enrol as a doctoral candidate once your Master’s transcripts clear equivalence review. A German Master’s degree or an equivalent foreign Master’s with 300 ECTS total is the floor. Candidates typically self-fund through the Deutschlandstipendium, DAAD, or a paid research position at a Sonderforschungsbereich.
Free University of Berlin Structured PhD Programmes
Structured programmes at Dahlem Research School run three-year cohorts with taught modules, English-language coursework, and stipend-backed positions. Application windows fall in October and April each year, with the next open call expected October 2026 for a start in the following spring. Positions are advertised individually at the Berlin Doctoral Programme in Natural Sciences.
Insider note: Indian doctoral applicants clear APS at the Master’s level as well — the certificate covers your entire academic record, not just the last degree. Structured PhD stipends at Dahlem Research School currently run around EUR 1,300 to 1,600 (around INR 1.42 to 1.75 Lakhs) per month, tied to the German TV-L 13 (65 percent) scale.
Note: Doctoral position availability, stipend amounts, and structured programme intake dates change every academic year. Confirm on the official Free University of Berlin doctoral studies page for the specific programme before applying.
Free University of Berlin Application Process Step by Step
Indian applicants for Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes at Free University of Berlin follow a fixed six-step sequence anchored by two platforms — uni-assist for document review and the Freie Universität Berlin portal for the final submission. Start at least 12 weeks before your target deadline, since APS and VPD each take four to eight weeks.
- Register on uni-assist at the Freie Universität Berlin uni-assist page. Add FU Berlin to your selection list and pay the application fee of EUR 75 (around INR 8,189) for your first university, then EUR 30 (around INR 3,276) for each additional.
- Apply for APS in New Delhi. Submit your Class X, Class XII, and Bachelor’s transcripts to the German embassy. Fee is EUR 27 (around INR 2,948) for Bachelor’s applicants and EUR 100 (around INR 10,919) for Master’s applicants.
- Upload documents on uni-assist for the VPD or full application review. Send certified copies of transcripts, English test score, passport, and CV. Processing takes four to eight weeks.
- Receive VPD from uni-assist. This translates your Indian marks into the German grading scale and confirms which FU Berlin programmes you qualify for.
- Submit through the FU Berlin portal. Log in to the university’s own application system, upload VPD, APS, motivation letter, and any programme-specific documents. Only after this step is your application considered filed.
- Wait for the admission letter. Restricted programmes reply within six to eight weeks of the deadline; unrestricted programmes within four weeks. Accept your offer in the portal and pay the first semester contribution.
Free University of Berlin Admission Decisions Timeline
Freie Universität Berlin does not release rolling decisions — reviews start after the deadline closes, and offers land in a single batch per intake. For the primary Winter Semester intake, restricted Master’s decisions ship out between mid-July and mid-August, and unrestricted Master’s between mid-September and early October. Summer Semester decisions land between mid-February and mid-March.
- Offer letter: issued as a Zulassungsbescheid (admission decision) in the FU Berlin portal, downloadable as PDF.
- Acceptance deadline: typically two to four weeks from the offer date. Miss this and the seat is withdrawn.
- Conditional offers: common for Indian applicants whose Bachelor’s is not yet complete — you must submit the final transcript before enrolment.
- Deferral policy: generally not permitted for restricted programmes. If you cannot enrol, reapply in the next cycle.
- Enrolment: pay the semester contribution of EUR 376.80 (around INR 41,143) and submit the health insurance confirmation to complete enrolment.
Free University of Berlin Documents Required for Indians
Documentation for Free University of Berlin splits across three envelopes: what you send to uni-assist for VPD review, what you send to APS in New Delhi, and what you upload to the FU Berlin portal after VPD. Every certified copy must be officially notarised in India, then translated into German or English by a sworn translator.
- Valid Indian passport with at least 12 months of validity beyond your programme start date.
- Class X and Class XII transcripts and pass certificates, certified by your school or a notary.
- Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated transcript for Master’s applicants, certified by your university.
- APS certificate from the German embassy in New Delhi.
- uni-assist VPD confirming your grade equivalence and programme eligibility.
- English test score report (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE, or Cambridge) less than two years old, or a Medium of Instruction letter from your Bachelor’s university.
- German language certificate (TestDaF, DSH, Goethe, or telc) for German-taught programmes.
- Motivation letter of one to two pages tailored to the programme, plus updated CV in Europass or standard format.
- dMAT certificate for Master’s applicants from Engineering, Commerce, Finance, Business, or Management backgrounds (from Summer Semester 2027 onwards).
- Sample scholarly work (Bachelor’s thesis or a 15-page seminar paper) for programmes like FACTS that require proof of academic writing.
- Passport-size photographs in ICAO format for enrolment after admission.
Before you apply: Certified translations from sworn translators in India cost around INR 500 to 800 per page. Bundle all your documents through one translator to save cost, and keep a scanned master copy of every document ready before you start uploading to uni-assist.
Free University of Berlin Acceptance Rate
Free University of Berlin’s institutional acceptance rate sits at roughly 15 percent, based on the ratio of admitted to applied candidates across degree levels. The figure is an estimate — the university does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate — and hides sharp swings across programmes.
Free University of Berlin Rate by Programme Type
Master’s programmes vary from 8 to 25 percent depending on how the seat cap is set. English-taught Master’s like MS Data Science, MS Computer Science, and MA International Relations sit at the tight end because Indian, Chinese, and European applicant volumes are the highest. Bioinformatics, FACTS, and Physics run in the mid-teens. German-taught Master’s are usually the most open, with acceptance closer to 30 percent for applicants who clear the language bar.
Free University of Berlin Selection Weightage
Restricted programmes score applicants on three axes: Bachelor’s final mark (up to 70 points), depth in subject-specific coursework beyond the minimum (up to 20 points), and relevant work experience or research (up to 10 points). Read Indian student reviews on Collegedunia for a first-hand look at how competitive each cohort feels.
Reality check: A First Class Bachelor’s degree at 65 percent or a CGPA above 7.5 out of 10 is the practical floor for competitive English-taught Master’s like Data Science. Anything below 60 percent rarely clears the shortlist regardless of test scores.
Germany Student Visa for Free University of Berlin Applicants
Indian students admitted to Free University of Berlin apply for the National D-Visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken) at the German consulates in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, or Kolkata. Book the appointment as soon as you receive your admission letter — slots at the New Delhi consulate typically fill six to eight weeks ahead. Visa fee is EUR 75 (around INR 8,189) and standard processing takes 6 to 12 weeks, so submit at least 12 weeks before your programme start date.
Financial proof is the single biggest hurdle. You must show funds of EUR 992 per month (around INR 1.08 Lakhs) for the first year, or EUR 11,904 total (around INR 12.99 Lakhs) blocked in a German Sperrkonto account with a provider like Expatrio, Fintiba, or Coracle. An Indian FD alone is not accepted by the German embassy in New Delhi. Alternatives include a DAAD or Deutschlandstipendium award letter, or a Verpflichtungserklärung from a German-resident sponsor. Carry your APS certificate, admission letter, blocked account confirmation, travel and health insurance for the first 90 days, passport-size biometric photos, and your English or German test score to the appointment. After arriving in Berlin, register your Berlin address within 14 days at the Bürgeramt and apply for the residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde within 90 days.
2026 update: The German embassy in New Delhi rolled out a centralised online booking system and a fast-track lane for admitted students at accredited universities, cutting average waits to six to eight weeks for Freie Universität Berlin admits. Bring the Zulassungsbescheid PDF, not a printed screenshot — consulate officers verify against the FU seal.
Tips and Checklist for Free University of Berlin Admissions
These tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Free University of Berlin. Combine them with the deadlines table above to build a working timeline from today.
- Start APS 6 months before the deadline: APS at the German embassy in New Delhi takes 8 to 12 weeks. For a 31 May 2027 restricted Master’s deadline, apply for APS by December 2026.
- Book your IELTS or TOEFL slot before uni-assist upload: uni-assist accepts only received scores, not booking confirmations. Sit the test by early April 2027 for a May deadline.
- Send certified copies, not originals: uni-assist keeps everything you send. Notarise duplicates in India before shipping — you will need originals again for the visa appointment.
- Bundle your uni-assist applications: pay EUR 75 (around INR 8,189) once and add up to three more FU Berlin programmes at EUR 30 (around INR 3,276) each. Cheaper than paying two separate first-application fees across cycles.
- Open the Sperrkonto after admission, not before: Expatrio, Fintiba, and Coracle release your admission-linked account within 3 to 5 working days. Freezing INR 12.99 Lakhs earlier ties up funds you might need for test retakes.
- Book the visa appointment the day your Zulassungsbescheid arrives: New Delhi slots for the Winter 2027/28 cohort will open in July 2027 and fill within two weeks. Same day booking gives you the best chance at a slot before mid-August.
- Register at the Bürgeramt in your first two weeks in Berlin: the Anmeldebestätigung is required for your residence permit, blocked account release, and university enrolment confirmation.
- Prepare for the dMAT if you are in an affected discipline: Engineering, Commerce, Finance, Business, or Management applicants for Summer 2027 and later need a valid dMAT certificate as part of APS.
Free University of Berlin rewards Indian applicants who plan a 9-month admission runway, treat uni-assist and APS as parallel workstreams, and align programme choice to the ECTS-level fit that Freie Universität Berlin’s admissions committees actually score against. With Berlin’s low cost of living and zero-tuition policy, the total cost stays among the lowest in Europe for a top-100 QS ranked university.

- No tuition fees, 2 year MS program, Opportunity to do a lab internship for a year and convert that to my thesis project, Transferrable skills
- Excellent faculty, structured syllabus, the opportunity to conduct research for 6 months and then use that experience to write your thesis, do a mini-experiment and have a shot at publishing your own paper
Dislikes
- No Placement cell or post course guidance on what to do after the MS. German culture in general is a cold culture with not many friends or approachable students. So one has to get used to live alone, used to their bureaucracy and rules.
Overview
Wonderful learning experience at Freie University Berlin. The 2 years I spent at the university were amazing, enriching, insightful and academically dense. The statistics course especially was tough and aimed at engineers but the professor made sure we understood it and now it pays off as I can understand the complex Math in research Papers. The opportunity to do an internship, my own thesis was the highlight and best part of the course as I got to apply the academic concepts in real life settings.
Scholarship
No scholarship but tuition fees was waived off.
