Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg charges zero tuition for its Bachelors and Masters degrees, an Indian student pays only the mandatory €333.30 | INR 36,613 per semester contribution. The most-applied Masters for Indian students are MSc Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, MSc Polymer Materials Science, MSc Medical Physics, MSc Computer Science, and MSc International Area Studies.

The Winter Semester 2026/27 intake (October 2026 start) has just closed for Indian applicants after the mid-July deadline. Your realistic entry is the Winter Semester 2027/28 intake, which opens for applications from October 2026 with deadlines falling between 15 May and 15 July 2027; a small set of programmes also opens Summer Semester 2027 with a 15 January 2027 deadline.

  • Semester contribution per year (semester ticket, admin, student union): €333.30 | INR 36,613

Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg Tuition Fees by Programme

MLU is a public university in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, which abolished tuition fees years ago and has not reintroduced them. Every registered student, German or international, pays the same €333.30 | INR 36,613 per sem Semesterbeitrag, which covers the semester ticket for regional public transport, student union services, and administrative processing.

Bachelors Programmes

Almost all MLU Bachelors are taught in German and require DSH-2 or TestDaF TDN 4 certification, which places them out of reach for most Indian school-leavers arriving without prior German study. Where a Bachelors seat is granted, the cost is identical to the Masters below.

Bachelors Programme Duration Language Main Intake
BSc Biochemistry 3 years German Winter Semester
BSc Pharmacy (State Exam) 4 years German Winter Semester
BSc Computer Science 3 years German Winter Semester
BA International Area Studies 3 years German Winter Semester

Masters Programmes

The Masters catalogue is where Indian students concentrate, with several English-taught tracks that only need IELTS 6.5 or B2 evidence, not a German test. Fees remain identical across every Masters seat.

Masters Programme Duration Language Main Intake
MSc Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences 2 years English Winter Semester
MSc Polymer Materials Science 2 years English Winter Semester
MSc Medical Physics 2 years English Winter Semester
MSc Computer Science 2 years German (with English elective tracks) Winter and Summer Semesters
MSc Biotechnology / Molecular Biotechnology 2 years English Winter Semester

Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg Scholarships for Indian Students

Since MLU tuition is already zero, scholarships here function as living-cost subsidies rather than fee waivers. Four channels matter for Indian students applying for Winter 2027/28: Deutschlandstipendium at MLU, DAAD from Germany’s federal side, MLU-Halle exchange grants, and India-side awards like Inlaks and JN Tata.

Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg Tuition Deposit and Payment Options

MLU charges no admission deposit and no reservation fee, unlike UK or US universities. The financial commitment you make before travel is the blocked account of €11,904 (INR 11.43 Lakhs) opened in your name, which unlocks the German student visa and is then returned to you as €992 (INR 95,232) monthly disbursements once you land in Halle.

Methods of Payment

  • Blocked account (Sperrkonto): Fund it via Expatrio, Fintiba, Coracle, or Deutsche Bank India, whichever offers the tightest EUR spread on the day. Expected transfer cost is 1.5-2.5%, so a €11,904 transfer costs around INR 20,000 to INR 30,000 in fees.
  • Semester contribution: Paid to MLU by SEPA transfer from your German bank account after arrival, once per semester. No foreign transfer needed after month one.
  • Health insurance (€130 per month, INR 12,480): TK, AOK, or Barmer pull directly from your German bank account each month.
  • APS certificate (INR 18,000): One-time payment to Akademische Prüfstelle at the German embassy in New Delhi before you submit your MLU application. Pay by demand draft or online through the APS India portal.

Steps to Pay Your Tuition and Fees at MLU as an Indian Student

  1. Obtain your APS certificate first, mandatory for all Indian applicants to any German university, processing takes 3-4 weeks.
  2. Apply to MLU directly or through uni-assist depending on your programme, no application-stage fee to MLU (uni-assist charges €75, INR 7,200, if used).
  3. Once you receive the Zulassungsbescheid (admission letter), open your blocked account with one of the DAAD-listed providers and transfer €11,904 (INR 11.43 Lakhs).
  4. Book the visa appointment at the German consulate in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, or the Delhi embassy, and pay the €75 (INR 7,200) national visa fee.
  5. On arrival in Halle, complete Anmeldung at the Bürgerservice, open a German bank account, activate health insurance, then pay the first-semester contribution at matriculation, keeping every receipt for future visa extensions.

Tip for Indian Students: Time your blocked account transfer for at least 3 weeks before your visa interview. Consulate visa slots for the Winter Semester 2027/28 intake open around March 2027 and fill by May, so aim to have the blocked account confirmation letter in hand by end-April 2027. A rushed transfer that reaches the provider late is the single most common reason Indian students miss their October start date.

Fee Saving Strategies for Indian Students at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg

Because MLU tuition is already zero, the highest-leverage savings for the Winter 2027/28 intake are on the living, insurance, and post-study earnings side, not on fees.

  • Move into Studentenwerk housing: €270 (INR 25,920) per month vs €330-€400 (INR 31,680-INR 38,400) for a private WG, saving roughly INR 90,000 per year over two years.
  • Work the permitted 120 full days or 240 half days per year: at €12-€14 per hour in Halle’s cafes, labs, and warehouses, a diligent student earns €5,000-€7,000 (INR 4.80-INR 6.72 Lakhs) per year, covering rent and food entirely.
  • Section 80E tax deduction (India): the interest on your education loan is fully deductible from your parents’ taxable Indian income for up to 8 years, saving 20-30% on the interest cost of a INR 22 Lakhs loan.
  • Post-study 18-month Job Seeker Visa: Germany allows Masters graduates 18 months to find full-time work, and starting salaries in Pharma, Chemistry, IT, and Engineering roles for MLU MSc graduates run €48,000-€60,000 (INR 46-INR 58 Lakhs) per year, letting you repay a INR 22 Lakhs loan in 3-4 years, half the standard EMI horizon.
  • Use MLU’s Mensa for one hot meal per day: €3.50 (INR 336) vs €10 (INR 960) at a Halle cafe, saving roughly €200 (INR 19,200) per month over a two-year Masters.

Tip for Indian Students: The single highest-value lever for the Winter Semester 2027/28 intake is the DAAD Study Scholarship, whose deadline of 15 October 2026 falls before most MLU application deadlines. It disburses €992 per month plus travel and insurance, worth roughly INR 12 Lakhs per year (INR 24 Lakhs across two years), and completely eliminates the need for an education loan. Prepare your DAAD file this autumn, not in the new year.

Is Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg Worth the Cost for Indian Students

Yes. A full MSc at MLU costs an Indian student roughly €22,800 (INR 21.89 Lakhs) all-in, against a UK equivalent at INR 40-50 Lakhs and a US equivalent at INR 60-80 Lakhs.

  • Germany also grants Masters graduates an 18-month Job Seeker Visa, meaning your MLU MSc gives you the same post-study runway as the UK Graduate Route or the US OPT, at a fraction of the tuition cost. Starting salaries in Germany for MLU MSc graduates in Pharma, Chemistry, IT, and Engineering roles range €48,000-€60,000 per year, roughly €4,000-€5,000 per month gross (INR 3.84-INR 4.80 Lakhs).
  • Even a INR 22 Lakhs education loan at INR 29,650 per month EMI absorbs under 10% of gross monthly salary, leaving substantial cushion for savings and repayment inside 3-4 years.

Key Insight: Net of the Deutschlandstipendium (INR 3.46 Lakhs) and a modest part-time job (INR 4.80 Lakhs per year), your two-year MSc at MLU can end at a real cash outlay of INR 12-14 Lakhs for the Winter Semester 2027/28 intake. Set against a €50,000 (INR 48 Lakhs) starting salary a year post-graduation, the payback horizon is under 12 months of net German earnings, a return profile no UK or US Masters can match.

For an Indian student targeting a European Masters, MLU Halle-Wittenberg lands in the sub-INR 22 Lakhs total bracket for a two-year MSc, roughly one-third of a UK equivalent. Apply for the DAAD Study Scholarship by October 2026 and Deutschlandstipendium once enrolled to compress your out-of-pocket spend to under INR 14 Lakhs across the full degree, and target the Winter Semester 2027/28 intake as your realistic entry point after the just-closed Winter 2026/27 window. The one action worth taking now is scheduling your APS certificate appointment at the German embassy in Delhi, since it gates every subsequent step.

Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg Fees FAQs

Ques. How much does a two-year MSc at MLU cost an Indian student in total?

Ans. A two-year MSc costs approximately €22,800 (INR 21.89 Lakhs) all-in, including €210 (INR 20,160) semester contribution, €21,600 (INR 20.74 Lakhs) living costs, €130 (INR 12,480) monthly health insurance, and the €75 (INR 7,200) visa fee. Studentenwerk housing lowers this to about €21,000 (INR 20.16 Lakhs).

Ques. Do I need to pay an admission or reservation deposit at MLU?

Ans. No. MLU charges no deposit and no reservation fee. Your only pre-arrival financial commitment is the blocked account (Sperrkonto) of €11,904 (INR 11.43 Lakhs) required for the German student visa, which is returned to you as €992 monthly disbursements once you arrive in Halle.

Ques. Is the blocked account of INR 11.43 Lakhs an actual cost or refundable?

Ans. Fully refundable in monthly slices. You transfer €11,904 (INR 11.43 Lakhs) to a provider like Expatrio or Fintiba before your visa interview, and once you land and open a German bank account, the provider disburses €992 per month back to you across 12 months. At Halle wage rates of €12-€14 per hour, a diligent student earns €5,000-€7,000 per year (INR 4.80-INR 6.72 Lakhs), which covers rent and food entirely. During your Masters thesis semester you can also work as a research assistant (HiWi role) at €12-€15 per hour on-campus.

Ques. What is the APS certificate and how much does it cost?

Ans. APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) is a mandatory academic verification certificate that every Indian applicant to a German university must obtain before applying. It is issued by the APS unit at the German embassy in New Delhi, costs €25 (INR 2,400) plus courier and notarisation of roughly INR 3,000, and takes 3-4 weeks to process.
