University of Hamburg Application Deadlines

Universität Hamburg runs a two-intake calendar per the official Campus Center application page. The Winter Semester (September start) is the primary intake, where all Bachelor’s, most regular Master’s, and the dedicated International Master’s programs open. Summer Semester (April start) is limited and mainly reopens a subset of Master’s programs. As of today, Winter 2026/27 has fully closed, so Indian applicants are working toward Summer 2027 or Winter 2027/28.

Note: The International Master’s window (15 February to 31 March) is the earliest annual deadline and covers most English-taught tracks, including MIBAS. Miss it and you lose an entire academic year for that program.

The MA International Business and Sustainability (MIBAS) is one exception routed through uni-assist rather than STiNE, so factor in an extra 6 weeks for uni-assist to evaluate documents before the 31 March cutoff. All other listed programs apply directly through STiNE without an intermediary.

UHH Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at Universität Hamburg is set by faculty. The institution-wide floor rests on academic percentage plus a language certificate, and Indian applicants must additionally clear APS verification before their file is considered complete.

• Bachelor’s general entry: Class XII around 65%+ (CBSE, ICSE, or state boards). A 4-year Bachelor’s degree from India is preferred if applying from an undergraduate background, since Indian 3-year degrees are often flagged as sub-equivalent to a German Abitur.
• Master’s general entry: A completed Bachelor’s with roughly 65%+ (or German GPA around 2.5 or better) in a subject relevant to the target Master’s.
• English proof (English-taught Master’s): IELTS 6.5 overall with no band under 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90+, or Cambridge C1 Advanced. PTE Academic 62+ is accepted by most faculties.
• German proof (German-taught tracks): DSH-2, TestDaF TDN 4 in all four sections, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, or Goethe C1/C2. Required for every Bachelor’s program.
• APS certificate: Mandatory for anyone whose prior degree was earned in India. Apply through the German Embassy’s Academic Evaluation Centre in New Delhi before opening a STiNE application.

Universität Hamburg IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

UHH does not publish a blanket Medium of Instruction (MOI) waiver for Indian applicants. Programs conducted entirely in English require a scored English certificate irrespective of Class XII or Bachelor’s medium. The one narrow exemption: applicants who already hold a degree from a recognised English-medium university and can produce faculty confirmation may have the score requirement individually reviewed. Assume the test is required unless the program page states otherwise.

Universität Hamburg PG Programs and English Scores

Universität Hamburg lists roughly 27 English-taught Master’s programs, most sitting inside the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences (MIN), and the Faculty of Law. There are no tuition fees. Every admitted student pays the base semester contribution of €384 (around ₹42,867) per semester. MIBAS is the one English-taught Master’s above that routes through uni-assist rather than STiNE. All others accept direct STiNE applications from Indian candidates, provided the APS certificate is uploaded alongside the transcript.

UHH Bachelor’s Programs and German Requirement

Bachelor’s applicants at Universität Hamburg face one hard filter that most Indian students do not: German at B2 or higher is mandatory for every UG program. UHH runs no English-medium Bachelor’s degrees. Indian Class XII graduates who cannot yet certify German B2 typically take a Studienkolleg preparatory year in Germany or defer the application until a German certificate is in hand.

Selection for Indian applicants follows the bonus points system: UHH converts foreign credentials into a German 1.0 to 4.0 grade, then adds points for above-threshold German scores or completed preparatory coursework. Class XII marks alone rarely secure admission to popular NC-restricted subjects such as Psychology or Medicine, where competitive German grades matter as much as raw percentage.

Hamburg PhD Admission Pathway

Doctoral admission at Universität Hamburg is rolling and supervisor-led. There is no fixed intake, no institutional deadline, and no admissions committee that vets you against a cohort. Placement is decided by the individual professor and faculty doctoral office that accepts your research proposal.

UHH PhD Admission Steps

• Find a supervisor first. Email faculty members whose published work aligns with your research interest, attach a short 2 to 3 page proposal, CV, and Master’s transcript.
• Secure written supervision consent. Once a professor agrees, the faculty doctoral office reviews the proposal and formally accepts you as a Promovend.
• Register through STiNE. After faculty acceptance, complete the doctoral enrolment application on the STiNE portal.
• Pay the semester contribution. €384 (around ₹42,867) is due for the first semester regardless of the enrolment date.

University of Hamburg Application Process on STiNE

Applications at Universität Hamburg run through STiNE (Studien-Infonetz), the university’s own portal. There is no central platform like uni-assist for most programs. The one exception is the MIBAS Master’s, which uses uni-assist for foreign-credential recognition before the department reviews the file.

1. Obtain the APS certificate. Apply at least 3 months before the STiNE deadline through the German Embassy in New Delhi. The APS fee is €250 (around ₹27,908), paid to APS not to UHH.
2. Create a STiNE applicant account at the official Universität Hamburg application portal. Registration is free and completed once per applicant.
3. Complete personal data, upload the APS certificate, Class XII marksheet, Bachelor’s transcript (if applying for Master’s), passport bio page, IELTS/TOEFL score report, and CV. All documents in PDF, in English or German.
4. Submit the STiNE form before the applicable deadline. No application fee is charged by UHH.
5. Await the offer decision in STiNE. Bachelor’s offers appear from mid-August, Master’s from mid-July for winter and mid-February for summer.
6. Enrol within 7 days of the offer. Late enrolment is not accepted for most programs.

Universität Hamburg does not conduct entrance interviews at the Bachelor’s or Master’s level. Selection is document-based, driven by academic percentage, language score, and any faculty-specific supplementary essays.

Documents at Universität Hamburg are submitted digitally through STiNE at the application stage. Certified paper copies are collected only after admission, during enrolment at the Campus Center. Universität Hamburg Acceptance Rate

Universität Hamburg does not publish a single institutional acceptance rate. Faculty-level admissions vary widely because many popular subjects run under numerus clausus (NC) capacity caps while others admit every qualified applicant. Aggregated third-party estimates place the overall acceptance rate at 18 to 36%, based on faculty capacity patterns rather than a UHH-published figure. Where Indian Applicants Sit Inside the Band

Master’s admissions for MSc Economics and MIBAS are noticeably tighter than the overall band, closer to 15 to 20%, because both attract international applicants well beyond seat capacity. MSc Mathematical Physics and MSc Wood Science admit closer to 50%+ of qualified applicants because seat pressure is lower. Bachelor’s admissions filter heavily on German language and NC scores, so raw Class XII percentages matter less than the certified German grade.

Germany Student Visa for Hamburg Applicants

Indian students admitted to Universität Hamburg apply for a National Visa (Type D) for study purposes at their assigned German consulate in India (Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, or New Delhi). Book the visa appointment as soon as the UHH admission letter arrives, because slot availability from May to August is tight for the September intake.

Financial proof is the single largest hurdle. Every Indian applicant must open a German blocked account (Sperrkonto) and deposit €11,904 (around ₹13.29 Lakhs) for a 12-month student visa, released monthly at €992 (around ₹1.11 Lakhs). Popular providers include Expatrio (setup around €89, around ₹9,935) and Fintiba (setup around €159, around ₹17,749). Alternatively, submit a Verpflichtungserklärung (formal obligation letter) from a German resident sponsor. The visa fee is €75 (around ₹8,372), paid at the consulate on appointment day.

2026 update: Standard visa processing is 4 to 12 weeks. Any change to the blocked account minimum for 2027 is announced by the German Federal Foreign Office each October. Verify the deposit ceiling before you fund the account.
