Technical University Munich fees for Indian students run €2,000-3,000 per semester (INR 1.88-2.82 Lakhs) for non-EU Bachelor programmes and €4,000-6,000 per semester (INR 3.76-5.64 Lakhs) for non-EU Masters, introduced from Winter Semester 2024/25. The most-applied Masters for Indian graduates are MSc Informatics, MSc Data Engineering and Analytics, and MSc Mechanical Engineering, all English-taught and winter-only.

Winter Semester 2027/28 is the primary intake for Indian applicants, with applications opening 1 January 2027 and closing 31 May 2027. Summer Semester 2027 (applications 1 September 2026 to 30 November 2026) exists but only a narrow slice of TUM Masters accept summer entry, so most Computer Science and Engineering applicants will target the winter cycle.

  • Bachelor tuition (non-EU): €2,000-3,000/semester, INR 1.88-2.82 Lakhs
  • Masters tuition (non-EU, standard band): €4,000/semester, INR 3.76 Lakhs
  • Masters tuition (non-EU, higher band): €6,000/semester, INR 5.64 Lakhs
  • Semester contribution (Studentenwerk, all students): €85 per semester, roughly INR 8,000
  • Deutschlandstipendium (merit award): €300/month, INR 28,200/month

A two-year MSc at TUM totals approximately INR 45 Lakhs including Munich living costs, and a three-year Bachelor sits closer to INR 54 Lakhs, both before scholarships or tuition waivers.

Winter Semester 2027/28 Intake: Planning Window Open

Intake: WS 2027/28 applications open 1 January 2027 and close 31 May 2027, this is the main intake for MSc Informatics, MSc CSE, MSc Mechanical, MSc EE and almost every English-taught Masters at TUM. SS 2027 (deadline 30 November 2026) opens for a limited programme list only. Non-EU applicants should budget 6-10 weeks for the German student visa after receiving the Zulassungsbescheid (Letter of Admission).

Fee update: Non-EU tuition remains at the 2024/25 introduced rates for WS 2027/28: €2,000-3,000/semester for Bachelors (INR 1.88-2.82 Lakhs) and €4,000-6,000/semester for Masters (INR 3.76-5.64 Lakhs). No Bavarian State increase has been announced for the next fee year.

When to pay: TUM does not charge a seat-holding deposit. First-semester tuition (roughly €4,085 including the €85 contribution) falls due at matriculation, four to six weeks after the Zulassungsbescheid. Full instalment mechanics live in the payment section below.

Scholarships: DAAD Study Scholarships for the WS 2027/28 intake open in August 2026 and close mid-November 2026, the single tightest external deadline for this cycle. Deutschlandstipendium applications at TUM open with matriculation.

For step-by-step application requirements, deadlines and document checklists, see the TUM Admissions guide for Indian Students.

Technical University Munich Tuition Fees by Programme for Indian Students

TUM sets non-EU tuition within a Bavarian State framework: a fixed band per level, with each TUM School positioning its programmes inside that band. All non-EU students also pay the semester contribution of €85 (INR 7,990), which covers the Studierendenwerk services and the Munich MVV semester ticket.

Technical University Munich Bachelor Fees for Non-EU Students

English-taught Bachelor programmes at TUM are limited, with the most common Indian-applied UG entry being the BSc Management and Technology at TUM Heilbronn campus. All Bachelors sit inside the €2,000-3,000/semester band.

Programme Level Per Semester (EUR) Per Year (EUR) Per Year (INR)
Bachelor, standard band €2,000 €4,000 INR 3.76 Lakhs
Bachelor, higher band €3,000 €6,000 INR 5.64 Lakhs

Source: tum.de/en/studies/fees, WS 2026/27 published rates.

TUM does not charge a separate application fee for applicants applying directly via TUMonline; applicants routed through uni-assist pay a processing fee of €75 first application, €30 each additional.

Technical University Munich Masters Fees for Non-EU Students

Masters fees at TUM sit in the €4,000-6,000/semester band, with the specific figure set by the offering TUM School. Most engineering and computing Masters cluster at the standard €4,000/semester tier, while a small set of specialised or executive-oriented Masters sit at the €6,000/semester higher tier.

Programme Level Per Semester (EUR) Per Year (EUR) Per Year (INR)
Masters, standard band €4,000 €8,000 INR 7.52 Lakhs
Masters, mid band €5,000 €10,000 INR 9.40 Lakhs
Masters, higher band €6,000 €12,000 INR 11.28 Lakhs

Source: tum.de/en/studies/fees, WS 2026/27 published rates.

Popular Indian-applied Masters at the standard band include MSc Informatics, MSc Data Engineering and Analytics, MSc Computational Science and Engineering, MSc Mechanical Engineering, MSc Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, and MSc Robotics Cognition Intelligence. MSc Management and executive-oriented Masters typically sit at the higher band.

Key Insight: Your WS 2027/28 admission is billed at the current 2024/25-introduced rates, so a standard-band MSc costs €8,000/year (INR 7.52 Lakhs) in tuition. Confirm the exact per-semester figure on your Zulassungsbescheid before you factor it into your loan amount, since TUM Schools set their own placement inside the band.

Technical University Munich Fee Trend Since Non-EU Tuition Introduction

TUM charged zero tuition to all students, EU and non-EU alike, until Winter Semester 2024/25. Non-EU fees were introduced under the Bavarian State framework at €2,000-3,000/semester for Bachelors and €4,000-6,000/semester for Masters, and have been held at those bands since. There is no long historic trend to plot; the table below shows the short post-introduction record.

Semester Bachelor (EUR/sem) Masters (EUR/sem) Bachelor (INR/year) Masters (INR/year) YoY %
WS 2024/25 (introduced) €2,000-3,000 €4,000-6,000 INR 3.76-5.64 Lakhs INR 7.52-11.28 Lakhs New
WS 2025/26 €2,000-3,000 €4,000-6,000 INR 3.76-5.64 Lakhs INR 7.52-11.28 Lakhs 0%
WS 2026/27 €2,000-3,000 €4,000-6,000 INR 3.76-5.64 Lakhs INR 7.52-11.28 Lakhs 0%

Source: tum.de/en/studies/fees, tuition policy published under the Bavarian Higher Education Act non-EU tuition provision.

Note: The Bavarian State framework caps non-EU tuition at €6,000/semester for Masters and €3,000/semester for Bachelors. TUM cannot exceed these ceilings without a State-level revision, which gives budget stability across a full two-year MSc even if the university adjusts within the band.

Cost of Living in Munich for Indian Students at Technical University Munich

Munich is the most expensive city in Germany for students, with the Studierendenwerk München estimating a monthly student budget of €1,100-1,400 (INR 1.03-1.32 Lakhs). Rent absorbs the largest share, and student halls or WG shared apartments dominate the affordable options.

Expense Monthly (EUR) Monthly (INR) Annual (INR) Notes for Indian Students
Rent (WG shared apartment) €600 INR 56,400 INR 6.77 Lakhs Studierendenwerk halls are cheaper (€300-450) but waitlists run 2-4 semesters.
Groceries €250 INR 23,500 INR 2.82 Lakhs Mensa meals cost €3-5, INR 300-500 each. Aldi and Lidl cut grocery bills by 20-25%.
Public health insurance (mandatory) €130 INR 12,220 INR 1.47 Lakhs TK, AOK or Barmer under 30. Private (Mawista) is cheaper but limits doctor choice.
Transport €0 INR 0 INR 0 Covered by the €85 semester contribution (MVV semester ticket, all Munich zones).
Internet, mobile, utilities €100 INR 9,400 INR 1.13 Lakhs Often bundled into WG rent, verify with landlord.

Total €1,200 INR 1.13 Lakhs INR 13.54 Lakhs Sits at the midpoint of the Studierendenwerk band.

Sources: tum.de/en/studies/international-students/cost-of-living and the Studierendenwerk München estimate published on studierendenwerk-muenchen-oberbayern.de.

Note: Munich rent has risen roughly 6-8% per year post-2022. If your Zulassungsbescheid arrives in June 2027 for the WS 2027/28 intake, start your housing search the same week, viable WG rooms under €600/month are typically taken within 3-4 weeks in July and August.

Munich living is more expensive than Berlin or Leipzig by 20-30%, but the semester ticket alone saves the average TUM student €600-800/year against buying monthly transit passes. Combined with the Mensa meal subsidy, the true out-of-pocket monthly burn for a disciplined student stays inside €1,100.

Currency Tip: Your first-semester tuition of €4,085 (INR 3.84 Lakhs) falls due at matriculation for the WS 2027/28 intake. Send it via a forex card or your university’s designated Flywire portal, not a direct SWIFT wire, this saves 2-3% on conversion and beats the branch INR-to-EUR rate by roughly INR 1.50 per EUR at current bank spreads.

Total Cost of Studying at Technical University Munich for Indian Students

The table below stacks Year 1 tuition, Munich living, and mandatory upfront costs for a standard-band Masters and a standard-band Bachelor. Masters living is calculated on a 12-month basis; Bachelor living uses the same 12-month basis because Munich accommodation rarely allows a summer break-out.

Mandatory Fees line combines the German student visa fee of €75 (INR 7,050), the semester contribution of €170/year (INR 15,980). The blocked account of €11,904 (INR 11.19 Lakhs) is held not spent, drawn down at €992/month for living, so it is not a sunk cost, see the payment section.

A full two-year standard-band Masters at TUM totals roughly INR 42-45 Lakhs, and a full three-year Bachelor totals INR 52-56 Lakhs. Financed at 10.5% over 10 years, a INR 45 Lakhs education loan carries an EMI of approximately INR 60,700/month.

Key Insight: A single Deutschlandstipendium award for the full two-year Masters delivers €7,200 (INR 6.77 Lakhs), which offsets roughly one full semester of standard-band tuition. Apply within the first two weeks of the winter semester at TUM, applications close early November each year and awards begin the following semester.

Technical University Munich Scholarships for Indian Students

Tip for Indian Students: For the WS 2027/28 intake, prioritise the DAAD Study Scholarship application closing mid-November 2026, then the JN Tata Endowment opening January 2027, in that order. DAAD is the only award on this list that can cover both TUM tuition and Munich living in one package, so applying first protects your fallback plan if trust awards do not come through.

Technical University Munich Tuition Payment Schedule for International Students

TUM does not require a seat-holding deposit. Instead, once your Zulassungsbescheid (Letter of Admission, the document your German student visa is issued against) arrives, first-semester tuition of €4,085 including the €85 semester contribution (INR 3.84 Lakhs) falls due at matriculation, typically four to six weeks after the admission letter. Tuition is not refundable once the semester begins, but it counts as your enrolment fee, there is no separate deposit.

Methods of Payment for Technical University Munich Tuition

  • SEPA bank transfer from a German account after arrival; the standard route for continuing semesters.
  • Flywire international payments for the first tuition invoice from India, TUM’s partnered provider for international incoming payments. Locks the INR-EUR rate at initiation.
  • Direct debit (Lastschrift) from your German account, once opened, for the semester contribution auto-deduction at re-registration.
  • Forex prepaid card loaded in EUR, useful for the first partial payments and the blocked account transfer.
  • Education loan disbursement from your Indian lender routed through Flywire, keep the SBI/HDFC/Axis A2 form ready.

Steps to Pay Tuition Fees at Technical University Munich as an International Student

  1. Accept the admission on TUMonline within the deadline stated on your Zulassungsbescheid (typically 4-6 weeks).
  2. Open a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with Deutsche Bank, Fintiba, Expatrio, or Coracle, deposit €11,904 (INR 11.19 Lakhs), and download the confirmation.
  3. Apply for the German student visa at your VFS Germany centre with the Zulassungsbescheid, blocked account confirmation and health insurance proof; €75 visa fee.
  4. On arrival in Munich, complete matriculation at TUM Student Service and pay first-semester tuition of €4,085 (INR 3.84 Lakhs) within the enrolment window.
  5. For each subsequent semester, pay the tuition + €85 contribution before the re-registration deadline (mid-January for SS, mid-July for WS), keep every receipt for your residence-permit renewal file.

Source: tum.de/en/studies/application/tuition-fees, TUM Payment Instructions for International Students.

Tip for Indian Students: Your WS 2027/28 matriculation window will fall in September-October 2027. Initiate the blocked account transfer of €11,904 (INR 11.19 Lakhs) at least 3-4 weeks before your visa appointment, wires from India to a Fintiba or Expatrio account can take 5-10 working days to reflect, and your visa cannot be granted without the confirmed balance.

Hidden Costs of Studying at Technical University Munich

For the WS 2027/28 intake, the most time-sensitive hidden cost is the APS Certificate: without it your TUM application is not processed, and the appointment queue at APS India runs 8-12 weeks in Delhi.

  • APS Certificate (Academic Evaluation Centre, Indian applicants): INR 18,500 fee, mandatory for all TUM applications from India.
  • Blocked account (Sperrkonto): €11,904 (INR 11.19 Lakhs) held as annual maintenance for visa; drawn down at €992/month for living. Setup fee €50-100 depending on provider.
  • Public health insurance: €130/month (INR 12,220), non-negotiable for enrolment; total INR 1.47 Lakhs/year.
  • German student visa: €75 (INR 7,050) plus VFS service charge INR 2,000.
  • Uni-assist processing fee: €75 first application (INR 7,050), €30 (INR 2,820) each additional, if your programme routes through uni-assist rather than TUMonline direct.
  • Flights Delhi/Mumbai to Munich: INR 55,000-85,000 one-way in August-September peak.
  • WG deposit (Kaution): 2-3 months’ cold rent, typically €1,200-1,800 (INR 1.13-1.69 Lakhs), refundable at move-out.
  • Optional German language course (A1/A2 pre-arrival): INR 15,000-25,000, useful for TUM’s non-CS Masters cohort.

Budget approximately INR 3-4 Lakhs for first-year hidden costs beyond tuition and living, plus the INR 11.19 Lakhs blocked account balance (which returns to you as monthly living).

Note: Families most often forget the APS Certificate cost and lead time. Book your APS appointment within two weeks of deciding to apply to TUM, the certificate is valid indefinitely once issued, and it is required for the visa file even after admission.

Fee Saving Strategies for Indian Students at Technical University Munich

The single largest saving lever for the WS 2027/28 intake is combining the Deutschlandstipendium (€300/month) with a part-time working-student role (Werkstudent) at a Munich firm, which together offset the majority of tuition without touching the loan principal.

  • Werkstudent role at a Munich firm: Indian students on a German student visa can work 140 full days or 280 half days per year. TUM’s ecosystem (BMW, Siemens, Rohde & Schwarz, Wacker) pays Werkstudenten €14-18/hour, roughly €1,100-1,400/month (INR 1.03-1.32 Lakhs), which alone covers Munich living.
  • Studierendenwerk halls over WG: Cuts rent from €600 to €350/month, saving INR 2.82 Lakhs across a 2-year Masters, if you get off the waitlist.
  • Mensa meals over cooking: €3-5 per meal against €7-10 for a takeaway; disciplined use saves €80-120/month.
  • Section 80E deduction on Indian education loan interest: Interest paid on loans from scheduled Indian banks is fully deductible from taxable income for up to 8 years, tangible for parents in the 30% bracket.
  • Blocked account interest: Fintiba and Expatrio credit modest interest on the blocked balance, recover €50-150/year.
  • Post-study Job Seeker Visa: Germany grants 18 months post-graduation to find a role; the first paid month in-market begins loan payback earlier than a UK or Australia route.

Tip for Indian Students: For the WS 2027/28 intake, target a Werkstudent role at a Munich engineering firm from your second semester onward. A typical 15-hour week at €16/hour delivers INR 1.13 Lakhs/month (INR 27 Lakhs across a 2-year MSc), more than the full-cost DAAD scholarship, and it starts building the German CV that leads to a Blue Card offer at graduation.

Is Technical University Munich Worth the Cost for Indian Students

A two-year Masters at TUM costs approximately INR 45 Lakhs all-in, against a starting German salary for a TUM-trained MSc Informatics or Engineering graduate of €55,000-70,000/year (INR 51.7-65.8 Lakhs), which is the clearest value case in continental Europe. Payback is genuinely within one to two years of employment.

The return signal is strong: TUM sits at QS World Rank 22 (2026) and Germany #1, THE World Rank 27 (2026) and Germany #1, and ARWU 45 (2025). Its MSc Informatics and MSc Data Engineering programmes place directly into BMW, Siemens, SAP, Google Munich, and the Fraunhofer Institutes. TUM’s THE Impact rank of #1 globally for Industry & Innovation is not a vanity metric; it reflects the volume of industry-tied research a Masters candidate can be placed on.

Germany’s 18-month Job Seeker Visa begins the day you graduate, and the EU Blue Card salary threshold for STEM roles sits at €41,041/year (INR 38.6 Lakhs), well below what a TUM Informatics graduate is likely to earn on their first offer. This gives a clean legal path from student visa to permanent EU work rights within three years of arrival.

On the loan-versus-salary math, a INR 45 Lakhs education loan at 10.5% over 10 years carries an EMI of INR 60,700/month. A first-year net German salary of INR 3.2-3.8 Lakhs/month post-tax covers the EMI, Munich cost of living, and still leaves surplus for savings. The financial arithmetic favours TUM more decisively than most UK or US alternatives at similar total cost.

Key Insight: For a WS 2027/28 standard-band MSc, the net cost after a single Deutschlandstipendium (€7,200, INR 6.77 Lakhs) drops to roughly INR 38 Lakhs, and payback against a first-year Munich engineering salary sits at approximately 2.0-2.5 years, the shortest payback horizon among top-25 QS universities worldwide for this fee band.

TUM’s total cost of INR 42-56 Lakls across a two-to-three year programme, offset by a €300/month Deutschlandstipendium and a Werkstudent income potential of INR 1 Lakh/month, gives Indian students the best value-per-rupee among top-25 QS universities. The single action to book now for the WS 2027/28 intake is the APS Certificate appointment, without which no other step, application, visa, or scholarship, moves forward.

Course Curriculum

  • The course curriculum is very relevant and up to date
  • It is very common for students to work part-time at companies such as Infineon, Siemens, BMW, Rohde & Schwarz, Airbus, and others.
  • The first two semesters are course-heavy. You could have, on average,e 4 hours of coursework every day. The next semesters are mostly spent on lab work, internship, and master's thesis.
  • Depends on the courses. The mandatory course modules can have around 80-100 attending students. The electives will have fewer students. This depends on how popular that specific elective is.

Fees

  • Tuition fees were minimal during my time (a few hundred Euros per semester). But now TUM charges 4000-6000 Euros per semester for international students pursuing Master's degrees.

  • The course was both theoretical and practical and was quite rigorous. Strong fundamentals are required, but the amount you learn is amazing. If you want to go into research and academia, then definitely it is the place for you, you learn a lot.
  • The negative aspect can be that a lot of the learning needs to be done by yourself, which is generally a contrast to the indian teaching methodology.
  • We are free to choose our own elective courses and design the schedule as per that. There are about 80 to 90 students in a cohort, and approximately 6-8 indian students in a batch.

Fees

  • Zero tuition fees, semester fees of 85 euros, monthly health insurance around 150 euros, rent around 600 euros, monthly public transport fees of 39 euros.
  • An amount of around 12000 euros needs to be shown in a separate blocked account at the time of applying for a visa to show that one can cover their expenses during the period. This is done via a third party service like coracle or expatrio.

  • The problem is that it was very difficult; whatever they teach you is just a basic understanding of it, but it's completely—you have to understand it in depth to actually pass an exam, it's more of a practical and to be honest, it's a mix of both.
  • The most positive and negative aspects are that my course is not that flexible to choose different modules of whatever I want; I have to complete all the modules that they tell me to. In a day, probably 2-3 classes, but it's also like there are few days where you don't have any classes at all.
  • Usual timing starts from 8:30, maybe also till 6:30; it depends, the class is basically one and a half hours, and you have a break of 5-10 minutes in between. Average number of students is 30 because I'm in a master program and there are more than 5-6 Indian students in every year.

Fees

  • I don't have any tuition fees, as I started my master's in 2022 and i have to pay some 85 euros as an administrative fee and thats all but now they have implemented a fee for non EU countries of something around 4,500 for bachelor's and 6,500 for master's.
  • It is semester-wise.
  • The monthly expenses is nearly 1000 euro; if you live in cities like Munich, rent would be somewhere around 500-700, travel 38 (Deutschland  ticket for students), 150 for groceries, 144 for health nsurance (mandatory), and  radio tax (18 euros)

  • The course was very difficult; however, it also depends on what kind of subjects one takes. I took very math-heavy courses and so it was quite difficult for me.
    • Positive - I know my subject very well because we are expected to know the subject in depth to be able to pass the exams.
    • Negatives - Due to this pressure, it increases stress in the students, especially those who are looking to finish university quickly.
  • Again, it depends on the students and how much the students take. There might be overlaps depending on the course a student takes. Courses are scheduled from 8am to 5pm.
  • Difficult to say the average, as I have had classes with only 20 people attending to one that had 1000+ people attending. I would say 50-70 students on average are present in the rather popular courses.

Fees

  • We did not have fees. We had a student contribution worth less than €120 a semester. This was mainly for the students union.
  • The contribution was charged before the starting of every semester.
  • My monthly expenses were around €900 which is around Rs.80-90k. A major chunk of this was for my rent, which is quite expensive in Munich. Other than that, most of my expenses went towards groceries and food in general. We could buy a €29 countrywide ticket, which allowed us to travel on any public transport throughout the country (except "bullet" trains).

For finding accommodations, there are online platforms like WG-gesucht. The challenges faced are that you should know German quite well, just knowing English is pretty hard to find. There are student dorms of the university, too, known as studentenwerk. You have to wait for quite a while for studentenwerk, and it is a bit expensive as Munich is expensive.

I found the course syllabus to be extremely vast and one can be spoilt for choices. Students have complete freedom to design their curriculum and even their exam schedule. The curriculum subjects were excellent for those who want to pursue industrial research in biotechnology. I found that there were fewer basic research subjects and more applied subjects. It was updated too, in that the professors would teach from their own areas of research, hence always providing up-to-date knowledge and research application of the topics. I was unfortunately unable to gain any industrial exposure or research experience since I was there during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fees

In the year 2020-21, my semester tuition fee was nil, and there was a semester contribution of around 145 euros. This included the Student Union costs and a semester ticket for free travel in public transport (buses, trams and trains) on weekends in the Munich travel network. However, non-EU (international) students enrolled in winter 2024-25 sessions and onwards will have a tuition fee of 2000 to 3000 euros per semester.

The course is up to date in my opinion. There are many modules to choose from as per our wanted outcome so it is flexible. Some of the modules are seminars where we are encouraged to work on a project, sometimes in groups or sometimes individually which helps us sharpen our research, problem solving and analytic skills. Various other courses also offer industrial exposure.

Fees

Currently, there is no tuition fee. I only have to pay 85 euros per semester but from winter semester 2024, the tuition fee would be about 4000 to 6000 euros per semester.

The course syllabus changes every year since the latest version is taught to the students. Course is very vast and covers most of the things that a student will need after the bachelors.

Fees

When I joined there was no tuition fees but since 2024 winter intake an additional fees of 4000 euros will be added

It is very relevant, but Tit is also very general , does not touch any topic in deep but covers all the topics. There was no industrial exposure, but since it was tied up with NTU, we had the lab facilities and research opportunities are given to all students.

Fees

4000-5000 SGD per semester

The Technical University Munich (TUM) accepts both the Goethe Zertifikat B1 and the DSH exam as proof of German language proficiency for their programs.
