CBSE Announces No Overall Division for Class 10 and 12 Board Exams

New Delhi: According to an official press release from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), it has been declared that students taking the class 10 and 12 board examinations will not be awarded an overall division, distinction, or aggregate. 

The announcement was made public following several requests seeking information on the criteria for calculating the percentage of students in the CBSE Board examination. Dr. Sanyam Bharadwaj, CBSE Controller of Examinations, announced this decision in an official press release under the essence of NEP 2020.

As stated in the press release, under sub-section 40.1 (iii) of Chapter 7 of the Examination Bye-Laws, CBSE declares that no overall division, distinction, or aggregate will be awarded. 

The press release further mentions that in cases where a candidate has appeared for more than five subjects, the responsibility to determine the best five subjects rests with the admitting institution or employer.

Additionally, the press release also clarified that CBSE does not undertake the calculation, information, or declaration of the percentage of marks. If required for higher education or employment, this task may be carried out by the admitting institution or employer.

Why is CBSE’s Decision for No Overall Division a Positive Change?

The recent decision by CBSE not to award divisions or distinctions has been widely appreciated as a positive change and a significant step aligning with the essence of NEP 2020. This move reflects a shift towards reducing academic pressure, promoting holistic education, and addressing concerns related to the mental well-being of students. 

The decision encourages a comprehensive approach to learning instead of solely focusing on exam performance. This shift aims to create a more balanced educational environment, emphasizing overall learning rather than rote memorization.

However, there may be concerns regarding the impact of this decision on students' motivation and the acknowledgement of their accomplishments. 

With transparent guidelines on assessing performance indicators, this decision has the potential to be advantageous for every child. 

According to Sanyogita Sharma, the welcomed change allowing the admitting institution to decide the best five subjects if a candidate has taken more than five subjects adds a positive aspect.
