COVID-19: Assam to Extend Academic Session to March 2021 for Government Schools

As classes are getting affected by the pandemic, the government of Assam has decided to extend classes from December to March of next year.

In Assam, the academic session of government schools runs from January to December,

The Education Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, tweeted that to make up for lost time, the cabinet has decided to revise the academic session of schools from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021, after consulting all stakeholders.

The Minister, who is also in charge of Health, Finance and PWD in the state, had earlier hinted that such a step might be taken to compensate for the loss of academic days due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“The academic calendar of each class shall be decided by the concerning academic authorities after proper consultation keeping in view the local climate and other factors”, he tweeted.

When asked if the measure will be implemented permanently or only for one session, Sarma answered that no decision has been taken as to whether it will continue for the next session or more.
